PCWorld reported on June 9, 2025, that security researcher Jeremiah Fowler found a publicly hosted, unencrypted database measuring 47GB and containing 184 million credentials. The report described credentials associated with major services, but it does not establish that Google, Netflix, or another named provider was itself breached. The likely source, according to PCWorld, was infostealer malware targeting users.

What was exposed—and what the report does not prove

PCWorld’s June 9, 2025 report said Fowler discovered an unencrypted database that was publicly accessible and was taken offline after it was reported to the hosting website. PCWorld reported its size as 47GB and its contents as 184 million credentials. Those are figures from that secondary report; the primary disclosure from Fowler was not available in the cited material.

The report named Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Apple among services represented, and also described bank and government accounts. The title’s mention of Netflix is not corroborated by the retrieved report text, so it should not be treated as a confirmed item in that enumeration. More broadly, a credential associated with a service does not show that service’s own systems were compromised: the report says infostealer malware was the likely source, harvesting information from affected users.

The reported count is credentials, not a confirmed count of unique people, valid passwords, or successfully compromised accounts. The cited material does not establish when the information was collected, which countries were affected, whether every record was genuine, or whether copies remain available elsewhere.

How infostealers can put accounts at risk

Infostealers are malware that can collect information from an infected device. As described in PCWorld’s report, they may take credentials saved in a browser or capture details a person types, along with other sensitive information. That is why credentials associated with several well-known services can appear in one exposed collection without proving that each service suffered a breach.

Cookies create a separate risk. A browser session cookie can keep a person signed in after the initial login. If malware steals an authenticated session cookie, an attacker may be able to use that session without repeating the normal login step. Changing a password or adding a second sign-in factor does not remove malware or necessarily invalidate every active session.

What to do if you think your credentials may be exposed

  1. Check the device first. Run a security scan and review installed apps and browser extensions. Remove software you do not recognize or do not trust. If you suspect the device is compromised, do not use it to enter replacement passwords.
  2. Secure key accounts from a known-clean device. Start with your primary email account and financial accounts, since access to email can help someone reset other passwords. If you cannot establish that a device is clean, use another trusted device to make account changes.
  3. Replace reused and sensitive passwords. Give each important account a unique password. A password manager can generate and store distinct passwords so that one exposed password is not reused elsewhere.
  4. Turn on an additional sign-in factor. Enable two-factor authentication or other multifactor authentication (MFA) for important accounts where it is available. A passkey is another option where supported; keep recovery methods current and secure.
  5. Review account access and sessions. Check account security settings for unfamiliar devices, active sessions, recovery details, or recent activity, and sign out sessions you do not recognize when the service offers that control. This is especially relevant when session cookies may have been stolen.

How the protective measures differ

Measure What it helps with What it does not do by itself
Device cleanup and security scan Looks for malicious software and addresses the risk of an active infection. Does not automatically replace stolen passwords or secure every account.
Password manager Generates and stores unique passwords for separate accounts. Does not remove malware from a device or prevent cookie theft on an infected device.
Two-factor authentication or MFA Adds a verification step to account sign-in. Does not clean an infected device, and a stolen authenticated session may bypass the ordinary login step.
Session and account review Can help identify and end unfamiliar access where the service provides those controls. Does not establish how credentials were exposed or guarantee that all copies of stolen data are gone.

Can you check whether your password was in this database?

Do not assume that a general breach-checking service contains this particular collection. Have I Been Pwned’s API documentation explains that its stealer-log records can combine a website address, email address, and password. It describes searching records by email address or website domain; domain searches require control verification, and its API does not return a user’s password. That documentation describes HIBP’s service, not confirmation that the reported 47GB database was added to it.

A search result that finds no exposure is not proof that a password was never stolen. If you reused a password or have reason to suspect an infected device, secure the account regardless of whether a lookup finds a match.
