Use 16:9 for most conventional horizontal YouTube videos, especially footage framed for widescreen viewing. Keep a video in 4:3 when that is the source’s native shape—such as archival footage—or when you deliberately composed the image that way. YouTube’s player adapts to different video shapes, so you do not need to stretch, crop, or add bars to make 4:3 footage fit.
How 4:3 and 16:9 differ
An aspect ratio describes the relationship between a frame’s width and height. A 16:9 frame is wider than a 4:3 frame: for example, 1920×1080 is 16:9, while 640×480 is 4:3.
| Decision | 16:9 | 4:3 |
|---|---|---|
| Typical fit | Widescreen footage and standard computer playback on YouTube. | Archival footage or a composition intentionally framed in 4:3. |
| YouTube player | Matches YouTube’s stated standard aspect ratio on computers. | The player adapts to the video; it does not require you to stretch or crop the image. |
| Resolution examples | YouTube lists 1920×1080, 1280×720, and 3840×2160 among its recommended 16:9 upload sizes. | YouTube’s partner-delivery specifications recommend at least 640×480 for 4:3 content; this guidance is for deliveries by music-label or distributor partners using Content Manager and the DDEX feed, not a universal creator minimum. |
YouTube describes 16:9 as the standard aspect ratio for playback on a computer, but that does not mean every uploaded video must be 16:9. Its player adapts to the video’s shape. ( YouTube Help: video aspect ratios; recommended upload encoding settings; partner video and audio formatting specifications.)
Which aspect ratio should you use?
Choose 16:9 for typical horizontal videos
For a new video recorded and edited as widescreen, export it in 16:9. YouTube’s recommended 16:9 sizes include 1280×720 (720p), 1920×1080 (1080p), and 3840×2160 (2160p/4K). Choose a resolution appropriate to your source and production; the ratio and resolution are separate choices.

Keep 4:3 when the footage or composition calls for it
If the original recording is 4:3, preserving that frame avoids changing the image unnecessarily. The same applies when you intentionally designed the composition for 4:3. YouTube’s player can adapt to the shape, so conversion to widescreen is not required simply because viewers may watch on a computer.
How to export 4:3 footage without distorting it
- Keep the original proportions. Set the editing sequence or export frame to the footage’s intended 4:3 shape rather than enlarging or squeezing the image into 16:9.
- Check the edges and subjects. Confirm that faces, titles, and important details are not cropped. If you choose to reframe for widescreen, treat that as a creative edit and review the resulting crop rather than assuming it is harmless.
- Export the clean image. Do not add black bars or padding just to force a 4:3 image into a 16:9 canvas. YouTube warns that padding can interfere with the player adapting dynamically. Let the player present the video in its intended shape.
- Review playback on the devices your audience uses. YouTube’s computer player has a 16:9 standard, while its Android app adapts the player shape for vertical, square, and horizontal videos. The display can therefore differ by device without requiring a different source ratio.
If black areas are part of the original picture or master, distinguish them from bars added during export solely to simulate another aspect ratio. The latter are the padding YouTube advises creators to avoid.

Do not confuse the video ratio with the thumbnail ratio
YouTube recommends a 16:9 thumbnail for regular videos, but that is thumbnail guidance—not a requirement to make the video itself 16:9. A thumbnail can use its recommended shape while the video preserves native 4:3 footage. Shorts have separate thumbnail guidance, so do not apply regular-video thumbnail advice to Shorts automatically. ( YouTube Help: add video thumbnails.)
Does one ratio get more views?
The cited YouTube guidance establishes display and upload recommendations, not a performance advantage. It does not show that 4:3 or 16:9 inherently improves reach, clicks, retention, or views. Choose the ratio that presents the material faithfully and suits its intended composition.
