4 Penny Coffins is an unreleased Windows investigation and social-deduction game set against the 1888 Whitechapel murders. Each night moves through three fixed phases—Hunt, Investigation and Conviction. One player is the hidden Ripper, while the other players investigate murders, test evidence and try to convict the killer. Solo play is listed, and online matches support up to eight players.
What 4 Penny Coffins is
4 Penny Coffins is being developed by Other Ocean Interactive and published by Other Ocean Group for Windows. The Steam store currently lists it as Coming soon, so the rules and balance described here come from the published game description and an official Steam Community announcement rather than a released build.
The setting is inspired by the 1888 Jack-the-Ripper murders in London’s Whitechapel. The game turns that historical atmosphere into a social-deduction case: a hidden player takes the Ripper role and commits murders, while the rest of the group works as investigators. The Ripper’s advantage is deception. Investigators must decide which observations are reliable, which statements conflict and which clues may have been planted.

- Social deduction: the group must identify a person who can actively misdirect them and make a false explanation sound plausible.
The store description summarizes the rhythm as: “Each night follows a deliberate three-phase cycle.” Learning that cycle is the most important first step because each phase has a different purpose and a different kind of decision.
The three-phase night cycle
1. Hunt
Hunt is the Ripper’s action phase. The hidden Ripper chooses and carries out the murder activity. Investigators are not yet weighing the full case; the important result for them is what the next phase will reveal and which people had an opportunity to be involved.
For a first session, do not try to solve the whole mystery during Hunt. Instead, be ready to establish a time line once Investigation begins. Note the location of the incident, who could reach it and which information is known directly versus reported by somebody else.

During Investigation, players examine crime scenes, question suspects, track suspicious behavior and piece together clues. The official description specifically warns that evidence can be faked. A discovered item or confident witness statement therefore starts a line of inquiry; it does not automatically establish guilt.
Use this phase to build links between independent facts. Ask who found a clue, when it was found, who else could have seen it and whether another person or observation confirms it. A claim that appears persuasive in isolation becomes stronger when its timing and details agree with unrelated testimony. Conversely, a clue that cannot be corroborated should remain marked as uncertain even if it points neatly toward one suspect.
3. Conviction
Conviction is the formal verdict phase. The group weighs the available evidence and delivers a decision instead of allowing discussion to continue indefinitely. The intended structure rewards a short, organized case: identify the suspect, list the strongest connected facts, explain contradictions and state what remains uncertain.

When you speak in Conviction, distinguish observation from interpretation. “The witness says the suspect was near the scene” is an observation about testimony; “therefore the suspect is the Ripper” is an interpretation. Keeping those separate makes it easier for the group to notice a fabricated clue or a misleading account.

The Ripper
The Ripper must commit murders while avoiding conviction. The published Ripper-mode objective is to commit two murders over the course of two nights and avoid being convicted during the following Conviction phases. Because the game has not launched, the final implementation of this objective may change.
Deception is the role’s central tool. A Ripper can redirect suspicion, encourage the group to overvalue a false lead and exploit disagreements about what happened at a scene. The role is not simply about making an accusation; it is about shaping the group’s explanation of the evidence while staying out of the verdict.
Investigators
Investigators must separate fact from fiction and develop a case before suspicion overwhelms the group. Their task is broader than finding a suspicious person. They need to establish access, timing, corroboration and motive-like patterns from the information the game provides, then communicate that reasoning clearly enough for a Conviction decision.
Investigators should expect uncertainty. A player who asks for a source, checks a timeline or points out a contradiction may be doing useful investigative work, not necessarily avoiding the case. Likewise, an articulate accusation is not proof that the speaker is innocent.
How to play your first night
Use the following routine before you try advanced deductions. It is a practical method based on the published evidence-and-deception loop, not a result from a tested launch build.

- Memorize the phase order. Enter the match knowing that Hunt comes first, Investigation follows and Conviction is the formal verdict stage.
- Start a simple timeline. Record the murder location, the time or sequence in which information appears and every person who had access to the scene.
- Label each fact by source. Mark whether a detail came from direct scene evidence, a suspect’s statement, another player’s report or your own observation.
- Check for corroboration. Compare witness accounts with physical clues and with one another. Record agreements as well as conflicts.
- Keep planted evidence possible. Since the official description says evidence can be faked, do not let one item settle the case by itself.
- Prepare a Conviction statement. Before the verdict phase, reduce your case to the strongest chain of facts and identify the weakest link.
This method prevents a common beginner error: replacing investigation with the loudest accusation. It also gives the group a shared record when memories of a conversation begin to diverge.
A practical evidence workflow
Separate access from suspicion
Ask who could physically or logically have reached the scene before asking who behaves suspiciously. Access narrows the field; behavior helps rank the remaining possibilities. A suspect who is nervous but had no opportunity should not outrank a calm suspect whose account places them at the scene.
Track the chain of custody
For every clue, write down who discovered it and who relayed it to the group. If the information passed through several players, preserve the original wording where possible. A small change in description can create a false contradiction, while a deliberately altered description can redirect the investigation.

Question a statement’s timing, detail and consistency. Does the speaker know something they could not reasonably know? Does the account remain the same when another clue is introduced? Does the person’s behavior support or undermine the story? None of these questions proves guilt alone; together they help the group decide which evidence deserves more weight.
Use uncertainty explicitly
Mark a clue as confirmed, disputed or unverified. This vocabulary keeps the group from treating a plausible theory as a fact and makes it easier to revise a conclusion when a later discovery conflicts with it.

- State the proposed suspect. Make clear whose conviction you are asking the group to consider.
- Give the evidence chain. Connect opportunity, timing, testimony and scene information rather than listing unrelated suspicions.
- Address the best contradiction. Explain why the strongest opposing fact is false, incomplete or still unresolved.
- State your confidence. Say which part of the case is solid and which part depends on an unverified clue.
This format is valuable for both sides. Investigators can expose gaps in a case, while the Ripper can exploit a chain that depends on a single fabricated premise. The objective is not to sound certain; it is to make the reasoning inspectable before the verdict.

Solo play and online multiplayer
The Steam listing confirms both solo play and online multiplayer, with online groups of up to eight players. It does not publish every final solo rule, so the single-player experience should not be assumed to be identical to a match containing a hidden human Ripper.

For a first solo session, concentrate on learning the phase order and evidence terminology. For a multiplayer session, agree on a shared way to report sources and timelines before the first Hunt. That preparation matters more than trying to memorize a fixed solution, because the Ripper can manipulate what the group believes it knows.
How many people can play?
The published Steam listing gives a maximum of eight players for online multiplayer. No smaller required party size or exact role breakdown is stated in the available official information, so do not infer how many investigators or Rippers appear in every lobby.
An eight-player group can generate more testimony and cross-checks, but it also creates more opportunities for contradictory accounts and groupthink. Keep reports concise: identify the source, the timing and the confidence level before adding interpretation.
Can your PC run 4 Penny Coffins?
The currently published minimum requirements are for Windows 10 and specify an Intel Core i5-12450H-class processor or equivalent, 8 GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050-class graphics processor or equivalent, DirectX 12, 2 GB of available storage and broadband internet.

Meeting a minimum specification does not guarantee a particular frame rate, resolution or loading time. There is no authoritative launch-day performance test yet, and the game is still marked Coming soon. Recheck the Steam page when a release date and final requirements are announced.
What is not known yet
Because 4 Penny Coffins is unreleased, several practical questions do not have authoritative answers:
- There is no official launch-day difficulty rating.
- No official playtime estimate has been published.
- The final rules may differ from the current description, including the implementation of the two-murders-over-two-nights Ripper objective.
- The complete solo rule set has not been published.

Beginner mistakes to avoid
Accepting one clue as a verdict
Faked evidence is part of the stated premise. Require a second line of support before treating a clue as decisive.
Ignoring timing
A statement about a person’s location is meaningful only when you know when the person could have reached the scene. Add every claim to the timeline.
Confusing confidence with proof
A forceful accusation can still rest on an unverified source. Ask the speaker to identify the evidence and its origin.
Saving all reasoning for Conviction
The verdict phase is for weighing and presenting a case, not for discovering every fact from scratch. Record contradictions during Investigation so the group can use its limited decision time effectively.
Assuming solo and multiplayer are identical
Solo play is confirmed, but its final rules are not fully described. Learn the common phase structure without assuming that a solo opponent behaves exactly like a human Ripper.
A launch-ready checklist
- Confirm that your Windows PC meets the published minimums.
- Install or update DirectX 12-compatible graphics drivers.
- Ensure at least 2 GB of free storage, plus room for updates.
- Plan a broadband connection if you intend to use online multiplayer.
- Before a match, agree on how the group will record sources, timing and corroboration.
- During Hunt, note the resulting scene and potential access routes.
- During Investigation, treat clues and testimony as potentially useful but possibly fake.
- During Conviction, present a concise evidence chain and identify uncertainty.
- Check the Steam listing again when the release date is announced, because requirements and rules may change.
The essential takeaway for a first session
Think of each night as a controlled investigation rather than an open-ended argument. Hunt creates the incident, Investigation tests what can be learned about it and Conviction forces the group to make a defensible decision. The Ripper wins by committing two murders across two nights and surviving those verdicts; investigators win by linking access, timing, testimony and behavior without letting a fabricated clue dictate the case. That framework is enough to begin learning the game while its final release details remain provisional.
