The initial version of Muse Image let people reference public Instagram accounts in generated images, then Meta removed that feature after criticism. Add unresolved privacy questions, the risks of an AI agent connected to other services, and a rollout that is still changing, and waiting is a reasonable choice.
1. The initial image feature got consent wrong
Meta’s July 2026 announcement of Muse Image described a feature that let users reference public Instagram accounts when generating images. Public visibility is not the same as permission to use someone’s likeness in an AI-generated image. After criticism, Meta edited the announcement to say, “We’ve heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it’s no longer available.” Meta’s announcement
The Associated Press reported that public Instagram photos had initially been usable as image references. SAG-AFTRA objected, saying: “With the dangers of nonconsensual digital replicas well known to all, a feature that encouraged that behavior is unwise.” The Associated Press report
This is a specific consent failure, not evidence that every public Instagram photo was used to train a model. The concern is that the feature treated public accounts as usable references for image generation, then was withdrawn after people objected.

2. Privacy depends on trusting Meta’s controls
Meta describes Muse as safe, secure and private, and says users can review proposed actions before the system sends emails or makes purchases. Meta’s Muse overview Meta’s description of Muse actions Those are product assurances, not proof that every privacy concern is settled.
Meta also says Muse connects to its apps and third-party systems, may make mistakes, and faces prompt-injection risks. Meta’s safety account Axios reported that questions about bystanders captured by Ray-Ban glasses remained unresolved, and described people’s use of Muse as tentative in light of Meta’s privacy track record. That does not establish a particular undisclosed data practice. It does mean that using Muse with sensitive conversations, images or connected accounts requires trust in how Meta’s safeguards work in practice. If you are not comfortable granting that trust, waiting is sensible.
3. An AI agent can make mistakes with real consequences
Muse is more than a chatbot that produces text. Meta says it can connect to services and propose actions such as sending email or making purchases, with the user able to review and approve them. Meta’s description of Muse actions

Why connections raise the stakes
A wrong answer is one kind of failure; a mistaken or manipulated action involving a connected account is another. Meta’s safety article identifies prompt injection as a risk in systems that interact with third parties. What approval gates do—and don’t—do
Reviewing an action before it happens is a useful safeguard, but it does not remove the need to inspect what Muse proposes. Check the recipient, content, amount and service involved before approving anything. If you would rather not monitor an agent’s actions closely, do not connect it to accounts where errors could matter.

4. The product is still changing
Muse Image has been rolling out in stages across the Meta AI app and selected Instagram and WhatsApp surfaces and regions. Meta’s Muse Video announcement described video as a preview or work in development, rather than a fully released capability. Availability and features can vary by region and product surface, and the image-reference change shows that a capability can be withdrawn as well as introduced. If you value predictable behavior and settled consent controls, waiting for the rollout to mature is a practical choice.

What to consider before trying Muse
- Image references: Decide whether Meta’s response to the withdrawn public-account feature gives you enough confidence in its consent approach.
- Privacy: Consider whether you are comfortable using Meta’s stated safeguards for the particular conversations, images or accounts you would connect.
- Actions: Treat email, purchases and other connected services as higher stakes than ordinary text generation; review every proposed action.
- Stability: Check which features are actually available to you, rather than assuming an announced preview is a released product.
