The 3Com NBX 100 was an on-premises business phone system that connected network phones and telephony services over an organization’s network. It is discontinued: the NBX 100 chassis went end of sale on January 20, 2007, so replacing a handset or chassis today is a legacy-hardware project—not a purchase of a current hosted VoIP service.
What the 3Com NBX 100 was
The NBX 100 combined call processing, voicemail, automated attendant, and system administration in an on-premises PBX. Its telephones were network devices, rather than conventional handsets connected directly to a phone line. The system could connect to outside telephony services through supported interfaces including loop-start analog lines with caller ID, T1, T1/PRI, E1/PRI, QSIG, and ISDN BRI-ST. 3Com’s 2002 product datasheet describes a capacity of up to 200 devices per location, including up to 100 PSTN lines.
That capacity is a historical product specification, not a claim that every installation had the same configuration. The NBX 100 is not a modern cloud-hosted phone service: its call-processing platform and associated hardware were installed and administered locally.
Is the NBX 100 still supported?
No current official support or new-stock availability should be assumed. Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s end-of-sale list gives the NBX 100 Chassis (3C10111C) an end-of-sale date of January 20, 2007, and records historical end-of-sale dates for associated phones, cards, adapters, and power products. HPE’s end-of-sale list is the relevant lifecycle record.

- This Certified Refurbished product is tested and certified to look and work like new. The refurbishing process includes functionality testing, basic cleaning, inspection, and repackaging. The product ships with all relevant accessories, a minimum 90-day warranty, and may arrive in a generic box. Only select sellers who maintain a high performance bar may offer Certified Refurbished products on Amazon.com
- This has been designed to support the emerging wideband audio standards developed to enhance the quality of voice conversations.
- A typical PSTN phone line reproduces speech at 3.3 kHz, a legacy of Alexander Graham Bell, whereas the 3102 phone can relay IP conversations at a frequency of 7 kHz or higher, enabling clearer and more productive phone calls.
- The Buttons on the phone have an improved tactile feel including a concaved dial pad. Eighteen light-emitting diodes (LEDs) make it easier for customers to choose the features they need and place them where they want on the phone.
- IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet is supported via the RJ-45 Ethernet connector.
HPE’s lifecycle policy says that hardware warranty coverage and support for covered 3Com products with a lifetime warranty generally ended five years after the product’s end-of-sale date, subject to product-specific qualifications. That policy does not establish that any particular NBX installation still has support, warranty coverage, or access to replacement parts. Check the product-specific terms and the status of any provider before relying on assistance. HPE Networking End of Life Information.
Choosing a replacement phone
If the system is still operating and a handset has failed, first identify its exact model and configuration. The NBX installation guide lists the 2101 Basic, 1102, 2102, 2102-IR Business Telephones, and 1105 Attendant Consoles as supported on NBX systems. The NBX installation guide also cautions that an NBX phone’s RJ-45 jack is electrically different from a traditional telephone line. A plug may fit physically without making the device interchangeable with a standard analog phone jack.
For a compatible handset, the likely search is 3Com NBX 2102 business phone. Because this is discontinued equipment, treat listings as used or refurbished inventory and verify the details with the seller before buying:
- Confirm the full model number and suffix, including whether it is a 2102-IR or another variant.
- Check that the phone’s region and power arrangement match the installation.
- Ask about condition, included accessories, and return terms.
- Confirm compatibility with the NBX software version and configuration in use.
A matching connector alone does not establish compatibility. The documented models provide a starting point, but the exact handset, power setup, and system configuration still matter.

Can you use an analog phone or fax machine?
Yes, an ordinary analog phone, cordless phone, or Group-3 fax device can be connected through an NBX Analog Terminal Card or Analog Terminal Adapter. The device then uses an NBX analog port rather than connecting directly as an NBX network telephone. The NBX administrator documentation describes the supported analog-device use and its practical limits.
- An analog telephone can make or answer only one call at a time.
- If a second call arrives while it is in use, that incoming call is sent to voicemail.
- Call transfer is supported.
An analog device can be useful when preserving a basic phone or fax connection matters more than access to NBX-specific handset features. A compatible NBX business phone is the better fit when those system-specific features are important.

What to know before replacing the chassis
Replacing the main NBX 100 chassis is not simply a matter of finding another chassis and moving cables. The administrator manual says a valid license backup file must be provided to a 3Com NBX Voice-Authorized Partner so equivalent license keys can be issued. If the backup cannot be located, establish what recovery options remain before purchasing hardware; the cited replacement procedure depends on that license file. The NBX Administrator’s Manual.
A specialist may advertise replacement systems, parts, phones, software, keycodes, or licenses, but an advertisement does not establish current stock, support terms, or authorization. Verify availability and the licensing process directly before committing to a chassis swap.

Extension plans and migration
The NBX 100 shipped with a factory-default three-digit dial plan. The administrator manual gives typical telephone extensions as 100–449. Do not confuse that with the SuperStack 3 NBX, whose factory default was four digits. When restoring a system, importing a plan, or moving to another phone platform, check the actual configured plan and resolve extension conflicts rather than assuming defaults are interchangeable. The NBX Administrator’s Manual.
Repair the NBX 100 or migrate?
There is no supported price comparison in the available product and lifecycle records, so the repair-versus-migration decision depends on the condition of the installation and quotes from providers. Compare the options against these practical questions:
- Handset compatibility: Can you obtain a documented compatible phone in suitable condition, or does the system require several replacements?
- Interfaces: Does the installation depend on NBX network phones, analog adapters, or legacy PSTN interfaces that a replacement platform must accommodate?
- Licensing: If the chassis is failing, is the valid license backup available for the documented recovery process?
- Availability and condition: Are the needed discontinued parts actually available, and can their condition and return terms be verified?
- Features: Would analog devices meet the need, or are NBX-specific phone features essential?
- Long-term support: Does a repair extend the useful life enough to justify continued dependence on discontinued hardware, compared with migrating to a currently supported system?
If the system is functioning and only a known-compatible phone or analog endpoint needs replacement, a targeted repair may be feasible. A failing chassis, missing license backup, or dependence on hard-to-source parts makes migration a more important option to evaluate.
