There is no side hustle that guarantees high pay and a schedule that always bends around childcare. The best fit depends on when you can work uninterrupted, what skills or equipment you already have, how much you can spend to get started, and how quickly you need reliable income. This guide groups 29 options by how the work actually operates—not by a promise of earnings.

The cited opportunity guides address stay-at-home parents broadly, and national gig-work statistics cover U.S. adults overall; neither establishes what single mothers earn specifically. Treat income estimates in commercial guides as estimates, not guarantees, and check local licensing, safety, and platform rules before taking on work.

How to choose a side hustle around caregiving

Start with the shape of your available time. Remote work can still involve live meetings, fixed shifts, or fast client deadlines. Conversely, some local work can be scheduled in advance but requires you to leave home. Before choosing, compare each option on these points:

  • Interruptibility: Can you stop and resume, or must you be available continuously?
  • Schedule: Are hours set by a client, student, platform, or customer appointment?
  • Startup needs: Do you need software, equipment, training, supplies, or a license?
  • Pay pattern: Is payment tied to completed work, appointments, sales, or recurring clients?
  • Customer acquisition: Will a platform find customers, or must you market and sell your service yourself?

In the Federal Reserve Board’s 2025 report on 2024 data, 20% of U.S. adults said they had performed a gig activity in the prior month. Among adults who performed gig activities, 55% said the work let them work flexible hours, 35% said it gave them work-life balance, and 49% wished the pay were more consistent. These are broad adult-population findings, not results specific to single mothers; the report’s gig categories include selling or renting items and short-term tasks, not just app-based work. See the Federal Reserve report on employment and gig work.

Skill-based remote services

These options are strongest when you already have a marketable skill and can agree with clients on clear deliverables. Repeat clients may make work more predictable, but finding those clients and meeting deadlines takes time. Remote does not automatically mean you can work in short, interrupted blocks.

1. Graphic design

Create logos, presentations, marketing graphics, or other visual assets for clients. A portfolio and design software may be needed. Define the number of revisions, delivery dates, and ownership terms before starting a project.

2. Video editing

Edit short-form clips, interviews, or longer videos. Projects can often be completed asynchronously, but rendering, file transfers, and client feedback can make deadlines less flexible. A capable computer and editing software may be startup costs.

3. Podcast editing

Clean up audio, remove pauses, and prepare episodes for publication. This can suit someone comfortable with audio tools and careful listening. Ask clients how many revisions and episodes they expect and when files are due.

4. Web development

Build or maintain websites for small businesses and organizations. This can command project-based work when you have demonstrable skills, but troubleshooting and launch deadlines may require uninterrupted time. Agree on scope and post-launch support in writing.

5. Freelance writing

Write articles, website copy, newsletters, or product descriptions. Work is often remote and deadline-based, so it can fit planned work blocks if clients do not require same-day availability. Confirm the assignment, rate, revision limits, and payment terms.

6. Grant writing

Help nonprofits or other organizations research and prepare grant applications. It requires strong research and writing skills, and deadlines can be inflexible because submissions follow funder calendars. Do not promise funding outcomes; the writer controls the application, not the grant decision.

7. Proofreading and editing

Review documents for grammar, clarity, consistency, or style. This work may be asynchronous, but accuracy and delivery dates matter. Specializing in a subject or document type can help distinguish your service from general proofreading.

Lang Brands, LLC, Moms 2027 Agenda Planner by Cindy Revell
  • Track important events like birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and other special occasions so you don’t forget.

8. Social media management

Plan and publish posts, respond to comments, or report on performance for businesses. Scheduling tools can make publishing more manageable, but community responses and campaign dates may create time-sensitive duties. Specify which channels and response hours are included.

9. Facebook group management

Moderate a group, approve posts, enforce community rules, and support member engagement. This can involve recurring work, but moderation needs may arrive at unpredictable times. Set coverage hours and escalation rules with the group owner.

10. Search engine optimization (SEO)

Help clients improve how their sites are organized and discovered through search. Work may include research, recommendations, content optimization, or technical tasks. Be transparent about what you will deliver; no consultant can guarantee a specific ranking.

11. Bookkeeping

Organize transactions and prepare financial records for businesses. Accuracy, confidentiality, and appropriate training are essential. Clarify whether the client expects categorization, reconciliation, or reporting, and do not offer regulated tax or accounting services unless qualified to do so.

12. Virtual assistant work

Support a business with tasks such as inbox organization, calendar coordination, research, or data updates. It may be remote, but some clients expect rapid responses or fixed availability. Agree on communication windows and task priorities before accepting the role.

13. Consulting

Advise clients in a field where you have substantial experience, such as operations, marketing, or a professional specialty. Consulting may pay for expertise rather than hours of production, but clients may expect scheduled calls and preparation. Define the scope and avoid claiming credentials you do not hold.

Scheduled teaching and client appointments

These options can offer repeat bookings, but they put work on a calendar. They are a better fit when you can reliably protect appointment time and arrange care for that window.

14. Online tutoring

Tutor students remotely in a subject you know well. Sessions are scheduled, so interruptions are difficult; consider whether your home setup supports focused calls. Check platform requirements, subject expectations, and cancellation policies.

15. Fitness coaching

Offer instruction or coaching in person or online if you have suitable expertise and credentials. Sessions are appointment-based, and safety matters. Verify any applicable certification, insurance, and local requirements before working with clients.

16. Photography

Photograph families, events, products, or portraits. The work includes more than the session: travel, editing, equipment, and delivery all take time. Startup costs can be significant, and bookings may cluster on evenings or weekends.

17. Childcare

Care for children in your home or a client’s home, subject to local rules and safety requirements. This may fit a parent already equipped for caregiving, but it is not automatically compatible with caring for your own children at the same time. Verify licensing, background-check, insurance, and capacity rules where you live.

18. Homeschool pod coordination

Coordinate a small group of families who share homeschool activities or instruction. The role can involve planning, communication, and in-person supervision. Agree on responsibilities, costs, emergency procedures, and any local legal requirements with participating families.

Local hands-on services

Local work avoids some online platform competition and may generate repeat customers, but it depends on travel, customer availability, and your local market. Price travel time and supplies—not just the hours spent with a customer.

19. Pet sitting and dog walking

Walk dogs or care for pets in clients’ homes. Visits and walks happen at specific times, which can be difficult to pause. Consider travel distance, animal-handling experience, emergency contacts, and whether insurance is appropriate.

Products, audiences, and resale

These routes can be built around making or selling something, but sales are not the same as predictable pay. Product work may require an audience, inventory, platform fees, marketing, or ongoing customer service.

20. Printables and digital designs

Create downloadable planners, templates, worksheets, or other designs to sell online. Digital goods avoid shipping physical inventory, but creating a product does not guarantee buyers. Account for marketplace fees, customer support, and the time needed to promote listings.

21. Content creation

Publish videos, posts, or other content around a subject you can sustain over time. Income may depend on audience growth, sponsorships, or platform monetization, so it is usually less predictable at the start. Protect family privacy and check the platform’s current eligibility rules.

22. Voice-over work

Record narration for ads, explainers, audiobooks, or other projects. You may need a quiet recording space and suitable audio equipment. Client auditions and revisions can be time-consuming, and a quiet environment may be hard to guarantee in a busy household.

23. Podcasting

Make a podcast independently or for a defined audience. Recording and editing can be scheduled, but building an audience and monetizing it are uncertain. Plan for consistent production before investing heavily in equipment.

24. Online courses

Package knowledge into lessons, worksheets, or demonstrations for learners. Creating a course takes concentrated upfront work; sales and ongoing updates are not guaranteed. Validate that learners want the subject before spending heavily on production.

25. Dropshipping

Sell products online while a supplier handles fulfillment. You still manage product selection, marketing, customer questions, returns, and supplier reliability. Calculate platform and advertising costs before assuming sales will be profitable.

26. Affiliate marketing

Earn a commission when someone purchases through a qualifying referral link. This generally requires a trusted audience or useful content, and commissions depend on conversions and program terms. Disclose material relationships and review the program’s current rules.

27. Retail arbitrage

Buy discounted goods and resell them for a margin. The Federal Reserve Board reported that 13% of U.S. adults sold items in the prior month in its 2025 report on 2024 data, but that figure covers adults broadly and does not indicate earnings or profitability. Track purchase costs, fees, shipping, and unsold inventory.

Platform tasks and research participation

These options may be easier to try without building a client business, but availability and pay can vary. Read the terms before sharing personal information, doing unpaid screening, or committing to a task.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

28. Online customer service

Handle customer questions by phone, chat, or email for a company. Remote roles may still require fixed shifts, quiet conditions, and reliable internet, making them less interruptible than freelance projects. Confirm schedule, equipment, and employment or contractor status.

29. Data entry

Transfer or organize information in spreadsheets or business systems. The work may have modest entry barriers, but accuracy, deadlines, and client security practices matter. Be especially cautious of postings that promise unusually high pay for simple data entry.

30. Test scoring and evaluation

Review or score student work, assessments, or other materials according to set criteria. Work may be seasonal and deadline-driven, and roles can require subject knowledge or training. Check the employer’s screening and qualification requirements.

31. Mock juror

Participate in research that asks people to evaluate legal case materials or arguments. Opportunities are typically occasional rather than a dependable income source. Confirm the research provider and understand how your information will be used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

32. Market research participation

Take part in surveys, interviews, or product research. Screeners may not lead to paid participation, and invitations can be irregular. Never pay a fee to access a legitimate research study, and avoid sharing sensitive information without understanding who is collecting it.

What does “high paying” mean in practice?

There is no evidence here establishing a typical income for single mothers across these 32 ideas. Shopify’s guide provides publisher estimates for earnings, startup costs, and flexibility for the opportunities it lists; those figures are not independently verified guarantees. Intuit Academy’s guide emphasizes choosing by work type, schedule, startup costs, pay structure, and skill fit. For a realistic comparison, estimate your own net hourly return after unpaid prospecting, travel, preparation, platform fees, supplies, and taxes.

A useful first test is to choose one option that matches a skill you already have, set a small amount of time and money you can afford to risk, and try to secure one paid customer or booking before expanding. For product or audience businesses, test demand with a small offering before building a large catalog or buying substantial inventory.

U.S. taxes and scam checks

For U.S. taxpayers, the IRS says net self-employment earnings from gig work of $400 or more generally mean a federal return must be filed. Gig income must be reported even if no Form 1099 is received. Independent contractors may need quarterly estimated tax payments; keep records of income, expenses, and receipts. These are U.S. federal rules, not guidance for readers elsewhere. Consult the IRS guide to managing taxes for gig work and check current rules for your situation.

Before accepting an opportunity, look for a real, traceable employer or client and written terms. Intuit Academy identifies unusually high pay for little work, no formal screening, untraceable employer information, upfront training fees or starter-kit charges, and pressure to act quickly as warning signs. Do not pay to get hired or share sensitive personal or financial information before verifying who is asking and why.
