To compare them, calculate your PC’s energy use for the same period as the service plan, then account for hardware, internet and the time required to operate each setup.
Calculate what it costs to run a PC 24/7
Use the PC’s average power draw—not its power-supply rating—and your electricity price per kilowatt-hour (kWh):
Electricity cost = (average watts ÷ 1,000) × hours operated × price per kWh
For a 30-day month of continuous operation, use 720 hours. As an illustration, StreamNeo’s comparison uses a 120 W PC: 0.120 kW × 720 hours = 86.4 kWh. At your tariff of T currency units per kWh, that example’s energy charge is 86.4 × T. The 120 W figure is a model input, not a measured average for all PCs. Actual draw varies with hardware and workload. StreamNeo’s comparison was published July 3, 2026, and its page search excerpt notes a September 19, 2026 service update.

Find your PC’s average draw
If you already know the system’s typical power use while streaming, use that figure. Otherwise, estimate it from the components and workload or measure consumption at the wall with an optional plug-in electricity usage monitor. A short reading may not capture changes in workload; use a representative streaming session when estimating average draw.
Use your own tariff and billing period
Electricity tariffs vary by location and plan, so there is no reliable universal monthly cost in dollars. Substitute the price per kWh shown on your bill, keep the currency and tariff consistent, and calculate for the number of operating hours in the period you want to compare. If your billing month differs from 30 days, use its actual hours rather than 720.

Compare the full cost, not just electricity
Compare the PC’s energy charge with the full price of a cloud plan for the same period. Then include costs and effort that a headline electricity figure omits.
| Factor | PC running locally | Managed cloud service |
|---|---|---|
| Direct recurring cost | Average kW × operating hours × local price per kWh | The current full subscription price for the required period and features |
| Setup and operation | Configure and maintain an encoder; monitor the computer and stream | Use the service’s upload and stream-management workflow; check plan limits |
| Dependencies | Computer power, local network and home upload connection | Service plan and its documented capabilities; verify its terms directly |
| Other considerations | Hardware wear and time spent troubleshooting or restarting | Storage, slot limits and any costs not included in the plan price |
This calculation can show which option has the lower direct recurring cost for your circumstances, but it does not establish a universal break-even point. The available evidence does not support a current vendor-by-vendor break-even figure or a comparative uptime claim. Check the exact plan and its limits before deciding.

Understand what “cloud streaming” means
Cloud pricing is not one uniform category. A managed service for looping uploaded prerecorded video is not the same product as a configurable live video processing API. For example, Google Cloud Live Stream API pricing is resource-based: charges depend on active channel time and configured input and output resources, with rates varying by resolution, codec and region. Distribution, captioning and translation can also incur separate charges. That API is not a managed prerecorded-video loop subscription, so its rates should not be treated as the price of one.
YouTube’s encoder setup and directory describes software encoders, standalone hardware encoders and cloud options for 24/7 prerecorded streams. It lists OBS as open-source software at no charge and identifies Gyre as a cloud-based tool for streaming prerecorded video without a dedicated PC. The directory establishes that these workflows exist; it is not an endorsement or a price comparison.

Check stream quality and connection requirements
A local PC’s electricity cost is only part of the decision if you need to configure an encoder and sustain an upload connection. YouTube recommends a reliable upload connection for the chosen bitrate, testing with representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health. Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution and frame rate. For example, the YouTube guidance lists H.264 at 1080p30 at 5–14 Mbps and AV1 or H.265 at 1080p30 at 4–10 Mbps. These are published recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection will maintain a healthy stream.
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings for the specific format you plan to send; requirements and recommendations can change. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Test the intended stream and watch its health indicators rather than assuming that a connection’s advertised download speed establishes adequate upload capacity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOr let it run in the cloud
If you are streaming uploaded prerecorded video to YouTube and would rather not leave a computer running at home, StreamNeo is one managed option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud service loops the uploaded video. It is for YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts.
- Your home computer and connection do not have to stay on for the stream to run.
- One flat price per slot covers the quality of the uploaded video, up to 4K 60fps; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding.
- Automatic recovery is provided if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month.
