For example, a steady 100-watt load uses 876 kWh in a 365-day year. At an assumed rate of $0.15/kWh, that would cost $131.40 in energy charges—not including fixed or demand charges.
There is no single reliable wattage for “a PC streaming YouTube”: actual draw depends on the computer and the rest of the setup. Measure your own equipment or use a clearly labeled estimate.
Calculate 24/7 electricity use and cost
The basic calculation is watts multiplied by hours, divided by 1,000:
kWh = watts × hours ÷ 1,000
For continuous operation over 365 days, use 8,760 hours. Multiply the resulting kWh by the applicable price per kWh on your electricity bill to estimate the energy charge.

- Find the average wattage of the complete setup you want to include.
- Multiply that wattage by the number of operating hours.
- Divide by 1,000 to convert watt-hours to kWh.
- Multiply the kWh by your electricity rate per kWh.
For example, a constant 100 W draw over a 730-hour month uses 73 kWh. At an assumed $0.15/kWh, that is $10.95 in energy charges. A 730-hour month is an approximation; use your actual billing-period hours for a closer estimate.

| Average draw | Energy per year | Example energy cost per year |
|---|---|---|
| 30 W | 262.8 kWh | $39.42 |
| 50 W | 438 kWh | $65.70 |
| 100 W | 876 kWh | $131.40 |
| 200 W | 1,752 kWh | $262.80 |
| 500 W | 4,380 kWh | $657.00 |
At a 100 W average draw, every $0.01/kWh change in the rate changes the 365-day energy estimate by $8.76. Substitute the rate from your own bill rather than treating the example rate as universal.
Use the PC’s actual average draw, not its power-supply rating
A computer’s power supply rating describes its capacity, not the amount the PC continuously consumes. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that nameplate ratings are generally maximum design limits and may be two to four times actual consumption; when possible, measure the device’s consumption instead (DOE guidance).

A gaming PC at idle, a small office PC playing a video, and a laptop can have very different average draws. YouTube resolution, hardware video decoding, browser choice, display brightness, and background tasks can also affect the result. No universal wattage for a PC streaming YouTube 24/7 is established here.
Measure the whole setup
- Plug a compatible electricity-usage monitor into the wall, then connect the equipment you want to measure through it.
- Include the monitor, speakers, or other devices only if you want their consumption included in the estimate.
- Run the computer in the same conditions as the planned stream, including the same playback resolution and connected equipment.
- Use an energy reading averaged over several hours or days rather than a momentary watt reading. If consumption fluctuates, measuring over time and dividing by the measurement period gives a more useful average; see DOE’s measurement guidance.
A plug-in meter helps replace a guessed wattage with a reading from your own setup. Check that it is compatible with the equipment and load you intend to measure.

Apply your electricity rate carefully
Use the energy rate that applies to your account and billing period. Electricity prices can vary by season or time of use, and the bill may include fixed fees or demand charges. The simple calculation estimates the added energy charge; it does not allocate fixed fees or fully model tariffs with demand charges. The DOE discusses these differences in its guidance on evaluating utility rate options.
For context, the DOE Federal Energy Management Program used 11¢/kWh for examples in its computer-cost guidance in July 2024. That rate was for federal-facility examples, not a universal household price (DOE computer guidance).

Compare the PC with other playback devices
If the goal is simply to play a video, compare the complete PC setup with the device that could do the same job. ENERGY STAR recommends a tablet for small-screen streaming and identifies a smart TV as an efficient option for a larger screen. It also reports that a computer uses 11 times the energy of a digital media player in its comparison; this is ENERGY STAR’s comparative figure, not a guarantee for every model or a direct test of every PC-and-monitor combination (ENERGY STAR digital media player information).
Power management and a stream that must stay live
ENERGY STAR computer criteria cover Off, Sleep, and Idle modes and include power-management requirements; its computer page lists the specification effective date as October 2025 (ENERGY STAR computer criteria). But an active stream may prevent the computer from sleeping. Do not count sleep-mode savings while the PC is actively streaming; power-management settings are a separate consideration for periods when the computer is not doing that work.
