What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no reliable universal figure for how much more it costs to run a gaming PC than an office PC for 24/7 YouTube streaming. The answer depends on each computer’s average power draw at the wall while encoding the same stream, plus your local electricity rate. Measure both machines under matching conditions, then use the calculation below.
How to calculate the monthly electricity cost
Use average wall power—not the power supply’s rated capacity or a graphics card’s stated power rating. For continuous use over a 30-day month:
Monthly cost = average wall watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 × electricity price per kWh
The result is the computer’s estimated monthly energy cost at the rate you entered. If you want a different runtime, replace 24 and 30 with the hours per day and number of days you expect to run it.

Illustrative calculation, not a current PC benchmark
Microsoft’s 2011 example measured an older test PC at 102 W while idle. Applying the formula gives 73.44 kWh for 30 days at 24 hours per day. At the article’s historical example rate of $0.10/kWh, that would be $7.34. This is an illustration of the arithmetic, not a current electricity quote or a representative office-PC result; Microsoft says its PC-only reading excluded peripherals, and electricity rates vary by location and utility. Microsoft’s calculation and measurement notes.
How to compare a gaming PC and an office PC fairly
- Measure each computer at the wall. Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor and record average watts while the actual stream is running. A single instantaneous reading may not represent a changing workload. Microsoft named a P3 International Kill-A-Watt P4400 as its example meter in 2011; that historical mention does not establish its present availability or price.
- Match the stream workload. Use the same resolution, frame rate, encoder, and content or encoding workload on both machines. Record the settings. YouTube’s recommended incoming bitrate varies with resolution, frame rate, and codec; its guidance does not quantify the PC’s power draw. YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolution guidance.
- Keep the measurement scope consistent. Decide whether you are measuring just the computer or also a monitor and peripherals, and include the same items for both options. Microsoft’s old example measured the PC without peripherals.
- Use your current electricity rate. Take the price per kWh from your latest bill or tariff. If your plan has time-based or tiered rates, use the rate that applies to the hours the stream will run rather than assuming one flat price.
- Calculate each result and compare. Convert the measured average watts into monthly kWh with the formula, then multiply by the same applicable rate. The difference between the two calculated costs is meaningful only for the measured machines, settings, runtime, and equipment included.
What published figures can—and cannot—tell you
A 2016 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory paper modeled a typical gaming-computer use case at 1,394 kWh per year including one display, assuming an average of 4.4 hours per day in gaming mode. It estimated an approximate $200 per year at typical household electricity prices. Those are dated modeled gaming-use figures, not a current bill estimate and not a 24/7 YouTube-streaming measurement. The paper describes a particular older test configuration; it says high-performance work-computer use was not included, and its discussion assumes one display, no peripherals, no overclocking, and power-saver settings. - Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
The same paper reported 25% energy savings across a specific Unigine Heaven benchmark test cycle for a more efficient GPU. That result excludes the display and does not predict savings from an arbitrary GPU replacement or a streaming workload. It should not be used to estimate the difference between the two PCs you are considering.
Microsoft’s 2011 test PC readings—102 W idle, 125–165 W under listed CPU loads, and 4 W in S3 sleep—describe its named older test setup, not today’s office PCs. No controlled, current head-to-head figure establishes the average wall draw of a modern office PC versus a modern gaming PC encoding the same YouTube stream around the clock.

Why the computer’s streaming settings matter
YouTube describes an encoder this way: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” The computer’s work depends on the encoder and stream workload, so the word “streaming” alone does not define a comparable power draw. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations help configure the incoming video; they do not tell you how many watts a particular computer will consume. YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
For a useful cost comparison, record the encoder and stream settings alongside the wall-meter readings. Do not infer the computer’s draw from bitrate, PSU capacity, or GPU TDP: those figures are not the same as measured system power during your actual workload.
