Windows 11 can feel slow, cluttered, or difficult to manage even on capable hardware. The most reliable fixes are built in: update the system, remove unnecessary work, reclaim storage, check for malware, and establish a backup before a serious problem occurs. The shortcuts and settings below address those jobs without promising a benchmark percentage that Microsoft has not published.
This guide is for Windows 11. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so an unsupported Windows 10 installation no longer receives the same ongoing security and maintenance coverage. If your computer still runs Windows 10, moving to a supported Windows 11 configuration should be part of your plan rather than treating these tweaks as a substitute for support.
Work through the sections in order when the PC is generally sluggish. For a single annoyance, jump directly to the relevant tip. Create a backup before making major recovery changes.

Tip 14: Open File Explorer with Win+E
Press Windows+E to open File Explorer immediately. Use it when you need to reach Downloads, a network location, or a backup drive without clicking through the Start menu. Keeping one Explorer window for files and another for a destination folder also makes drag-and-drop copies easier to verify.
Tip 15: Launch Run, Search, and Settings directly
Windows+R opens the Run dialog for commands and paths, Windows+S opens Windows Search, and Windows+I opens Settings. Run is useful for a known tool such as appwiz.cpl or a folder path; Search is better when you know the name but not the location; Settings takes you straight to configuration pages.
Tip 16: Switch apps and workspaces with Alt+Tab and Win+Tab
Alt+Tab cycles through open applications. Hold Alt and press Tab repeatedly, then release to select the highlighted window. Windows+Tab opens Task View, where you can see open windows and virtual desktops. Use Task View when you want to separate work, personal browsing, or a meeting from another set of windows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTip 17: Control the desktop with Win+D and Win+M
Windows+D shows or hides the desktop, toggling your current windows back when pressed again. Windows+M minimizes windows. Win+D is a quick “show me the desktop” toggle; Win+M is useful when you need to clear the screen and then restore windows individually.
Performance: make Windows do less unnecessary work
When someone asks, “How can I make my Windows PC faster?”, start with maintenance and observation rather than random registry edits. The following changes target updates, background load, power behavior, and drive housekeeping.
Tip 1: Install Windows updates and optional driver updates
Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install what Windows offers. Then inspect Advanced options > Optional updates for driver packages that apply to your hardware. Microsoft says Windows updates often include fixes and performance improvements. Restart when prompted; a pending restart can leave fixes unapplied and keep update processes running in the background.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Read an optional driver’s description before installing it, especially on a stable production machine. If a device works correctly and the optional package is unrelated, you can record it for later rather than changing several variables at once.

Tip 2: Use Task Manager to identify the actual bottleneck
Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On Processes, sort by CPU, Memory, or Disk to see which applications are consuming resources now. The Performance view shows whether the pressure is on the processor, memory, storage, network, or graphics. Startup apps lists programs that launch with Windows.
Do not end a process merely because its name is unfamiliar. First save work, identify the application or publisher, and close it normally. End a task only when you understand what it is and accept the risk of losing unsaved data.
Tip 3: Disable unnecessary startup apps
In Task Manager, open Startup apps, review each item’s impact, and disable programs that do not need to launch at sign-in. Leave security software, hardware utilities, and tools you genuinely require enabled. Disabling an entry does not uninstall it; it simply stops automatic launch, and you can still start the program manually.
Tip 4: Limit background app permissions
For apps that do not need to refresh while you are away, open their app settings and set Background app permissions to Never where that option is available. Fewer background refreshes can reduce activity and notifications. Keep permissions for applications that must sync or deliver timely information, such as a calendar you rely on.
Tip 5: Reduce visual effects when responsiveness matters
Search for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, open Performance Options, and choose Adjust for best performance. This reduces animations and other visual effects that consume resources. The trade-off is a plainer interface; text and window movement may look less polished. If the result is too stark, re-enable individual effects instead of returning to every effect.

Tip 6: Choose Best performance power mode when plugged in
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and select Best performance when the computer is connected to power and you need maximum responsiveness. Microsoft warns that this mode uses more electricity, drains a laptop battery faster, and may increase heat. Use a balanced mode on battery power or when fan noise and temperature matter more than peak responsiveness.
Tip 7: Optimize drives with the built-in tool
Search for Defragment and Optimize Drives, select a drive, and choose Optimize. Windows applies the appropriate optimization for that drive type. Let the operation finish when possible, and avoid treating it as a cure for every slowdown; it is routine drive maintenance, not a replacement for diagnosing a failing disk or insufficient memory.
Tip 8: Close unused apps and browser tabs, then restart
Close programs and browser tabs you are no longer using, particularly pages with active video, large web applications, or many extensions. If the slowdown persists, restart Windows. A restart clears temporary application state and completes updates that are waiting for a reboot. It is a simple final step before deeper troubleshooting.

Storage: recover space so Windows can update and work normally
Storage pressure is a performance issue as well as a housekeeping issue. Microsoft notes that a PC running out of storage may show slower performance or trouble installing Windows updates.
Tip 9: Turn on Storage Sense
Open Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense and turn it on. Storage Sense can remove temporary files automatically according to its schedule. Review the available cleanup choices before enabling automatic deletion so you understand what Windows may remove.
Tip 10: Clear temporary files and run Disk Cleanup
In Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files, inspect the categories, select items you no longer need, and choose Remove files. You can also search for Disk Cleanup, select the relevant drive, review the categories, and confirm. Do not select personal files or a previous Windows installation unless you are certain you no longer need them for recovery.

Tip 11: Uninstall apps you no longer use
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, sort or filter the list, and remove software you recognize but no longer need. Uninstalling recovers storage and can reduce background activity. Keep drivers, hardware control panels, and applications used by other people on the computer unless you have confirmed they are unnecessary.
Security and usability: reduce threats and interruptions
Tip 12: Run a Windows Security quick scan
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, check that protection is active, and select Quick scan. Malware can consume CPU and disk resources, so a scan is a sensible response to unexplained high usage, pop-ups, or sudden sluggishness. If the quick scan reports a problem, follow Windows Security’s remediation instructions and scan again after the action completes.
Tip 13: Silence notifications you do not need
Go to Settings > System > Notifications. Turn off notifications for apps that interrupt you without providing useful information, or use each app’s notification controls for a narrower change. Fewer alerts reduce distractions and can slightly reduce background activity, while essential security and account warnings should remain enabled.
Backup and recovery: protect your files before failure or reset
A faster PC is not a successful outcome if a drive failure or reset destroys irreplaceable files. Use Windows’ backup features and keep a second copy that is separate from the computer.
Tip 18: Configure Windows Backup for files, settings, apps, and Wi-Fi information
Open Settings > Accounts > Windows backup and sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the backup. Review every category Windows offers, including folders, settings, app information, and Wi-Fi information, then enable the items you actually want restored. Microsoft describes Windows Backup as a built-in place to back up many important parts of a Windows PC.
Check the account and selected items after setup. A backup setting that points to the wrong account or excludes a critical folder is not a complete backup.

Tip 19: Keep a second copy on an external drive or in cloud storage
Microsoft identifies both an external drive and cloud storage as backup destinations. An external USB backup drive provides a clear physical copy you can disconnect from the PC; cloud storage keeps a copy away from local hardware and can be available from another device. These approaches solve different failure cases, so use the destination that matches the data’s importance and your connectivity.
| Destination | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| External USB drive | Local, fast copy that remains available without internet access | Can be lost, damaged, or encrypted by malware if left connected |
| Cloud storage | Off-site copy and access from another device | Depends on account access, internet connectivity, and available capacity |
After copying, open several files from the backup to confirm they are readable. Keep the external drive disconnected except when backing up or restoring so a single malware incident is less likely to reach both copies.
Tip 20: Back up before resetting or reinstalling Windows
Recovery actions can cause data loss. Before selecting Reset this PC or starting a reinstall, complete this checklist:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Run Windows Backup and verify the Microsoft account and selected folders, settings, apps, and Wi-Fi information.
- Copy irreplaceable documents, photos, project files, and other personal data to an external USB drive or cloud destination.
- Open a sample of the copied files and confirm that the versions you need are present.
- Make sure you can sign back in to the Microsoft account and any other accounts needed after the reset.
- Connect the computer to reliable power, record any recovery key or device-specific information you may need, and only then begin the reset.
Choose the reset option that matches your goal and read its confirmation screen carefully. A reset is a recovery operation, not a routine speed tweak; the backup is what makes it reversible when something important was overlooked.
A practical order for a slow Windows 11 PC
If you want one sequence rather than twenty isolated ideas, use this order: install Windows and optional driver updates; run a Windows Security quick scan; inspect Task Manager; disable unnecessary startup and background activity; close unused apps and restart; turn on Storage Sense; clear temporary files; uninstall unused software; and optimize the drive. Use Best performance mode only while plugged in and only when its extra power use and heat are acceptable. Once the machine is stable, configure Windows Backup and maintain a second copy before any reset or reinstall.
