Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You cannot become completely anonymous online with one setting. The practical goal is to reduce how easily people can identify, track, or compromise you by layering account security, device protection, data minimization, and carefully chosen privacy tools. Start with unique passwords and multifactor authentication (MFA), then choose additional controls based on who you want to keep your information from.
What does “staying anonymous online” actually mean?
Anonymity is a matter of degree. A VPN can conceal your home IP address from a website, for example, but it does not hide your identity when you sign in, stop every cookie or fingerprinting technique, or prevent you from sharing identifying details yourself. Tor can make it harder to link browsing to your network location, but it does not make an identifiable account or an insecure device anonymous.
Choose protections around a specific concern: advertising trackers, identity thieves, an abusive partner, an employer, data brokers, or a capable state actor. These are different threat models. The strongest practical starting point for most people is preventing account takeover and reducing identity links, not trying to hide every trace of network activity.
The scale of third-party tracking can be easy to underestimate. Researchers presenting at the Federal Trade Commission’s PrivacyCon 2024 reported that 96% of the sampled hospital webpages made a third-party data request, with a median of nine parties. That is a result for their sample, not a rate for every hospital website or the web as a whole.

Which protections should you prioritize first?
Work from the accounts and devices that could expose the most: primary email, financial and health accounts, cloud storage, and social profiles. Securing email matters especially because it can be used to reset access to other accounts. NIST describes MFA as “a security enhancement that allows you to present two pieces of evidence – your credentials – when logging in to an account.”
| Control | What it helps with | Trade-offs and remaining exposure |
|---|---|---|
| Unique passwords plus a password manager | Limits the damage when a password is exposed or reused elsewhere. | You must protect access to the manager and keep account recovery options usable. It does not stop tracking while you are signed in. |
| MFA | Adds another check beyond a password, reducing the chance that a stolen password alone is enough to enter an account. | Recovery and service support vary by method. MFA does not make a device or account anonymous. |
| VPN | Changes which network operator and IP address a destination service sees. | You shift trust to the VPN operator. Cookies, browser fingerprinting, logged-in identity, and information you disclose can still link activity. |
| Tor Browser | Can reduce linkage between browsing and your ordinary network location. | It adds friction and may be slower or incompatible with some sites. Logging into identifying accounts or mixing identities undermines the separation. |
| Tracker controls and data minimization | Reduce some collection and the amount of identifying material available to connect. | Controls differ by browser, app, and service; they cannot prevent every form of tracking or collection. |
20 practical tips to protect your privacy
1. Define who you are protecting yourself from
Write down the likely observer and what they could access. Blocking routine ad tracking is different from protecting against someone with access to your phone, an employer managing a work device, or a targeted attacker. This choice determines whether convenience-friendly settings are enough or whether you need stronger identity separation and stricter browsing habits.
2. Give every account a long, unique password
Never reuse a password across accounts. If one service is breached, a reused password can expose other accounts too. Prioritize email, financial, health, cloud-storage, and social accounts because they can contain sensitive data or provide routes to reset other passwords.
3. Use a password manager
A reputable password manager can generate and store distinct passwords so you do not have to memorize or reuse them. Choose a strong master password, protect the manager with MFA where available, and make sure you understand its recovery process. Keep recovery information somewhere you can still reach if you lose a device.

4. Turn on MFA for important accounts
Enable it first for primary email, financial, health, cloud-storage, and social accounts. MFA adds a second proof at sign-in; it does not prevent every attack, but it makes a stolen password less useful on its own. Save recovery codes securely rather than leaving them in an unprotected note on the same device.

5. Prefer passkeys or security keys when supported
Passkeys and FIDO2/WebAuthn hardware security keys are designed to resist common phishing attacks more effectively than codes that can be entered on a fake sign-in page. Support and recovery options vary by service, so check how you would regain access if a key or device is lost. Keep a backup method or key in a secure place when the account allows it.
6. Know the trade-offs among MFA methods
| Method | Phishing resistance | Recovery considerations | Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| SMS code | Lower: a code can be phished, and access to the phone number may be at risk. | Depends on retaining access to the number and the service’s recovery process. | Commonly offered, but availability varies by account. |
| Authenticator-app code | Better than SMS in many cases, but a code can still be phished if entered on a fraudulent page. | Plan for transfer or restoration if the phone is lost; save service recovery codes. | Varies by service. |
| Passkey | Designed to resist phishing by binding sign-in to the legitimate service. | Recovery depends on where the passkey is stored and the provider’s recovery options. | Varies by service and device. |
| FIDO2/WebAuthn hardware key | Phishing-resistant when the service supports the standard. | Keep a securely stored backup key or another recovery method if available. | Not every service supports security keys. |
7. Install security updates promptly
Turn on automatic updates for your phone, computer, browser, router, and apps where practical. Updates fix security weaknesses as well as bugs. For devices that cannot update automatically, check for updates on a regular schedule and replace software that no longer receives security fixes when feasible.
8. Lock every device
Use a strong passcode or password, with biometrics only as a convenient option backed by that credential. Set the screen to lock after a short idle period, and make sure a lost-device service is configured if you may need to locate, lock, or erase the device remotely.
9. Encrypt devices and backups
Enable full-disk encryption on computers and phones when available, and use encrypted backups for sensitive data. Encryption helps protect stored information if a device or backup is lost or stolen; it does not protect data while an unlocked device or logged-in account is in use. Store backup recovery keys and credentials separately from the device they unlock.
10. Remove unused apps and limit permissions
Uninstall apps you no longer use. For the rest, allow location, microphone, camera, contacts, and photo-library access only when the app’s function requires it. Prefer limited or one-time access where the operating system offers it, and revisit permissions after app or system updates.

11. Recheck privacy settings after major updates
Review account privacy and ad-personalization settings as well as device controls for location, camera, microphone, contacts, and photos. Menus and defaults change between services and versions, so look in the relevant account or device privacy settings rather than assuming an old choice still applies.
12. Separate identities in sensitive contexts
A username is only one clue. Reusing a profile image, recovery email, phone number, writing style, or other distinctive detail can link accounts that use different handles. Where separation matters, use distinct identifiers and avoid signing into a personal account from the profile you use for sensitive browsing.

13. Share less personal information publicly
Avoid posting your home address, predictable routines, travel plans while you are away, family details, or images of identifying documents. Review older posts too: details that seem harmless one at a time can become identifying when combined.
14. Use browser tracking controls and separate profiles
Choose a privacy-focused browser with tracker and third-party-cookie controls, and keep it updated. Use a separate browser profile for high-sensitivity work so its cookies and sign-ins are not mixed with everyday browsing. Tracker blocking reduces some collection, but it cannot stop every tracking method.
15. Reduce fingerprinting and unnecessary browser complexity
Browser fingerprinting uses characteristics of your browser and device to help distinguish or link visits. Avoid piling on unnecessary extensions or unusual customizations: they can add access to your browsing data and may make your setup more distinctive. Avoid signing into every service from the same profile when separating activity matters.

16. Use encrypted messaging and verify sensitive contacts
Choose encrypted messaging for conversations that should not be readable to the service or network observers. Encryption does not conceal every detail, such as who is communicating or when, and it cannot prevent a recipient from copying or sharing messages. When the app offers safety numbers or key verification, use them for conversations where confirming the contact’s identity matters.
17. Use a VPN only when its trust trade-off makes sense
On an untrusted network, a VPN may help keep local network operators from seeing the same destinations they could otherwise observe, and it changes the IP address a destination sees. In exchange, the VPN operator becomes a party you must trust. Before choosing one, examine its ownership, jurisdiction, logging claims, and independent audits; a provider’s privacy claims are not proof that cookies, fingerprinting, account sign-ins, or voluntary disclosures will be hidden.
18. Use Tor Browser when network-location separation matters more than convenience
Tor Browser can reduce linkage between a website visit and your ordinary network location, but it is not a substitute for secure accounts and devices. Keep an anonymity context separate: do not sign into identifying accounts or reuse personal identifiers there. Expect added friction, slower browsing, or site compatibility problems, and avoid changing settings or adding extensions without a clear reason.
19. Use HTTPS, appropriate encrypted DNS, and secure Wi-Fi
Prefer HTTPS sites, which encrypt the connection between your browser and the site, and use encrypted DNS where it is available and suitable for your setup. These protections do not hide your identity from a site you log into or prevent tracking after a page loads. Treat public Wi-Fi as an untrusted network; check that you have joined the legitimate network and keep devices updated.
20. Reduce old data and prepare for loss or compromise
Delete accounts you no longer use, revoke third-party app access you do not need, and request deletion of stored data where a service offers that option. Periodically search for exposed personal information. Keep encrypted backups, store recovery codes offline, configure remote-wipe capability where available, and decide in advance how you would respond if a device or account were compromised.

How should you choose between a VPN and Tor?
Neither tool makes every online activity anonymous. The practical distinction is where trust is concentrated and how much operational discipline the tool requires.
| Factor | VPN | Tor Browser |
|---|---|---|
| Anonymity and network location | Changes the IP address sites see, but the VPN operator can become the network intermediary you trust. | Can reduce linkage to your ordinary network location; careful separation is still necessary. |
| Who must be trusted | The VPN operator’s ownership, jurisdiction, and handling of data matter. | Does not depend on choosing a single VPN provider, but your account behavior and device security still matter. |
| Ease and speed | Often simpler to use day to day; performance depends on the service and connection. | More friction and can be slower. |
| Compatibility | Usually less disruptive, though some sites may restrict VPN traffic. | Some sites may not work smoothly or may require extra verification. |
| Cost | May be free or paid; assess the provider rather than assuming a paid plan guarantees privacy. | Browser use does not require choosing a VPN subscription. |
| Metadata that can remain | Cookies, fingerprinting, logged-in identity, and information you disclose can still identify or link activity. | Identifying logins, shared identifiers, and unsafe device or account practices can still connect activity to you. |
Use a VPN when shifting network-level trust away from a local network is useful and you are willing to assess the provider. Use Tor Browser when reducing network-location linkage is more important than speed, compatibility, and convenience, and you can keep that browsing separate from identifying accounts.
How do you keep privacy protections manageable?
A useful plan is to apply the controls that address your largest risks first, then review them periodically. The Federal Trade Commission’s business data-security guide organizes its advice around five principles: “TAKE STOCK; SCALE DOWN; LOCK IT; PITCH IT; PLAN AHEAD.” For personal use, that translates into knowing what information you hold, collecting or sharing less, protecting what remains, deleting what you no longer need, and preparing for incidents.
- Secure important accounts with unique passwords and the strongest MFA method they support.
- Keep devices updated, locked, and encrypted, with recoverable backups.
- Remove unnecessary app access and limit what you publish or provide to services.
- Choose browser, VPN, or Tor controls according to the observer you are trying to limit—not as a promise of total anonymity.
- Store recovery codes and backup credentials so they remain available without sitting unprotected on the device they protect.
CISA’s 2025 tip sheet likewise recommends device locks, automatic updates, long unique passwords, password managers, stronger privacy settings, and care in sharing personal information. EFF’s Surveillance Self-Defense guides provide further practical explanations of threat modeling, passwords, MFA, encryption, Tor, VPNs, digital footprints, mobile privacy, and secure deletion.
