To complete the Eloquent Fox Esbat in 1666: Amsterdam, investigate the Athenaeum Illustre, infiltrate Jacob Elzinga’s House of the Balance through its basement, recover his ancient name (Claes Shipper), finish the daytime Nominem-and-scratch gate, then follow moonlight to the nighttime Agares encounter. The boss battle is only one stage of the Esbat; you must still collect the NUX and complete Cornelia’s transcription and ceremony objectives.
Spoiler warning: This is a complete route for the Eloquent Fox investigation, including Jacob Elzinga’s identity, Claes Shipper’s name, the House of the Balance infiltration, the Nominem gate, and the Agares fight.
What you need to know before starting
The quest is structured as a daytime investigation followed by a nighttime supernatural encounter. The game does not always point directly to the next interaction, so progression depends on reading evidence, using the correct character ability, and waiting for objective changes before moving on.

- Ancient name: Claes Shipper is the name required by the Nominem spell.
- Two evidence sites: The Athenaeum Illustre provides the university-office clues, while the House of the Balance contains the residence evidence with the ancient name.
- Character roles: Aaron handles jumping, scratching and possession; Noa handles witch-form combat and the Nominem spell.
- Easy-to-miss rewards: Rebuilding furniture in both the university room and the residence attic grants a power-up.
This route applies to the Windows PC Early Access version described by the available walkthroughs. Early Access updates can move interactions or alter objective wording, but the sequence and evidence distinction remain the key to solving the investigation.

1. Get the Eloquent Fox lead from Adriaan
Return to the courtyard
Travel back to the courtyard at home and speak with Adriaan. His conversation identifies the Eloquent Fox as Jacob Elzinga and places the Athenaeum Illustre on your map. Do not leave for the university before the map marker appears; without this conversation, later rooms and objectives may not register correctly.
2. Investigate the Athenaeum Illustre
Watch Jacob on the second floor
Enter the Athenaeum Illustre and go to the second floor. Observe Jacob accusing a woman of sorcery. This scene establishes the investigation target and unlocks the search of his room. If you arrive before the scene is active, check that Adriaan’s courtyard conversation has been completed.
Use Aaron’s route through the ceiling
- Switch to Aaron.
- Use the jump points on the left side of the upper floor.
- Cross the chandelier to reach the ceiling opening.
- Enter through the opening and drop into the room.
- Unlatch the floor door from inside.
Unlatching the floor door is important because it creates a normal entrance from below. It also prevents you from having to repeat the chandelier route if you leave the room and return.

Search the room thoroughly. Interact with the documents rather than relying only on the objective marker; the written evidence supplies the lead that sends Noa and Aaron to Jacob’s residence. The office material concerns the university investigation and related seal or journal clues. It is not the source of Jacob’s ancient name.
Look for the broken furniture interaction and rebuild it before leaving. Completing this repair grants a power-up. Because the reward is optional-looking and easy to overlook, make the repair part of your standard search rather than treating it as decoration.

3. Reach the House of the Balance
Find Jacob’s residence on Voorburgwal
After the Athenaeum search, follow Noa and Aaron’s direction to the House of the Balance on Voorburgwal. The residence is close to the Athenaeum Illustre. Guards at the entrances distinguish it from neighboring buildings, so use the guarded property as your landmark rather than searching the entire street for a new map icon.
Enter through the basement window
The guarded front entrances are not the intended route. Circle to the rear of the building and locate the open window to the left of the rear entrance. Aaron can drop through this window into the basement.

- Find a servant in the basement and possess the servant.
- As the servant, leave through the back entrance.
- Escort Noa upward through the residence.
- Send Aaron ahead whenever a trapdoor must be unlatched.
- Release possession only when Aaron is out of sight so the servant is not caught performing an impossible action.
Possessing a servant is the documented infiltration method. The available guides do not establish a universally shorter route through the guarded house, so treat alternate attempts as experiments rather than a guaranteed shortcut.
4. Clear the attic and recover the ancient name
Deal with the two attic guards
Two guards wait in the attic. Change Noa into her witch form to deal with them. Once the attic is safe, inspect the shelves and use the upper-room document interaction. Search both areas; relying on only one interaction can leave the evidence objective incomplete.
Repair the second set of furniture
Rebuild the broken attic furniture before descending. This is the second power-up in the investigation and is separate from the repair in the Athenaeum room. Neither repair is required to identify Jacob, but both provide useful progression benefits and are easy to miss if you rush to the documents.

Read the residence evidence
The residence evidence reveals Jacob Elzinga’s original or ancient name: Claes Shipper. This letter or name evidence is the item needed for the spell gate. The office journal can provide the residence address, but it does not replace the letter/name evidence found in the House of the Balance. If the Nominem interaction is unavailable later, return to the residence and confirm that the name evidence was actually read.

5. Complete the daytime Nominem and scratch gate
Cast Nominem with the recovered name
Return to Jacob after collecting the residence evidence. With Noa, cast Nominem using the recovered name, Claes Shipper. The spell is the daytime identification step; simply knowing Jacob’s public identity is not enough.
Have Aaron scratch the target
After Noa casts the spell, switch to Aaron and scratch the target as prompted. Wait for the game to confirm that the breach has occurred. Do not leave immediately after the scratch animation: the objective must update before the daytime sequence is considered complete.
The nighttime objective appears only after the Nominem-and-scratch sequence has fully registered. If you cannot start the night fight, the most likely cause is an incomplete daytime gate rather than a missing combat item.
6. Prepare for night and locate the encounter
Follow the home-preparation objective
Once the breach confirmation appears, follow Noa’s home preparation objective. Complete the indicated preparation interactions before searching for the boss. Leaving the area early or ignoring the preparation step can make the encounter marker seem absent.

Use moonlight as your landmark
The game provides little direct wayfinding for the night encounter. Look for a visible beam of moonlight and follow it. The moonlight leads to the fight location; it is the practical environmental marker when no useful waypoint is displayed. Search outward from the prepared home area until the beam is visible, then keep following it rather than returning to the university or residence.
7. Defeat Agares and finish the Esbat chain
Identify the Amalgam
The Eloquent Fox’s Amalgam is Agares. Reach the moonlight-marked arena after the preparation objective has advanced, then defeat Agares using your normal character-switching and combat abilities. The investigation’s earlier evidence work does not provide a special damage number or guaranteed shortcut for this battle, so focus on completing the encounter state rather than searching for an unlisted item.
Collect the NUX
After Agares falls, collect the NUX. The fight is not complete for quest purposes until this pickup registers. If the objective does not advance, check the arena for the dropped NUX before leaving.
Continue Cornelia’s transcription and ceremony
Picking up the NUX closes the combat portion but not the entire Esbat chain. Continue with Cornelia’s transcription objective and then the ceremony objectives shown by the game. Treat the boss as the midpoint between investigation and ritual completion, not as the final quest step.

Troubleshooting common progression problems
“I cannot find the Eloquent Fox.”
Return to the home courtyard and speak with Adriaan. The game’s investigation route begins with his identity lead; searching the university before that conversation may not activate the intended scene.

“The House of the Balance is locked or heavily guarded.”
Do not force the front entrance. Find the open window left of the rear entrance, enter the basement as Aaron, possess a servant, and use the back entrance while escorting Noa. Aaron should move ahead to open trapdoors, and possession should be released only when no guard can see the change.
“I found the office journal, but Nominem still does not work.”
The office journal and residence evidence serve different purposes. Return to the House of the Balance and read the letter or name evidence that reveals Claes Shipper. The journal’s address clue alone does not satisfy the ancient-name requirement.
“The night fight will not start.”
Verify the daytime sequence in order: Noa cast Nominem with Claes Shipper, Aaron scratched the target, and the game displayed a breach confirmation. Then complete the home preparation objective. The night encounter is gated behind those steps.
“I cannot locate Agares.”
Look for the beam of moonlight after the preparation objective advances. The game gives limited direct wayfinding, and the moonlight is the environmental route marker. If no beam appears, return home and check for an unfinished preparation interaction.
“The boss is defeated, but the Esbat is still active.”
Search the arena for the NUX and collect it. Then follow Cornelia’s transcription objective and the subsequent ceremony steps. Defeating Agares alone does not close the chain.
