Best overall: the CloudValley W3 webcam cover is the most balanced choice for laptops, tablets, and phone front cameras. However, MacBook owners need to treat almost every adhesive slider differently: Apple says a camera cover left on a Mac laptop should be no thicker than 0.1 mm, and thicker covers should be removed before closing the lid. Most products in this guide are substantially thicker.
These accessories are physical shutters or sliders that block a built-in front-facing camera when it is not in use. They do not disable the camera electronically, block microphones, or protect a phone’s rear camera. The FBI lists covering or taping over an unused webcam as a privacy mitigation, making a reusable slider more convenient than an improvised piece of tape.
What to know before choosing a camera cover
A webcam cover is a small adhesive-mounted shutter. Slide it open for a video call and closed when you want to block the lens. It is useful for laptops, tablets, monitors, and some smartphones when the cover’s dimensions match the flat area around the front camera.
A closed shutter can prevent the camera from seeing anything, but it cannot stop audio capture through the microphone, protect the rear camera on a phone, or secure an already-compromised device. Use camera and microphone permissions, operating-system updates, and account security as separate protections.

The FBI’s cyber-awareness guidance specifically includes covering a webcam when it is not in use. A slider is preferable to a permanent opaque sticker because its state is visible and the camera can be uncovered without replacing adhesive material.
The MacBook warning
MacBook fit is the most important qualification in this entire list. Apple’s support guidance warns that the clearance between a Mac laptop’s display and keyboard is very tight. Apple says a cover should be no thicker than 0.1 mm; if it is thicker, remove it before closing the display. Apple also warns that covering the camera area can interfere with the ambient-light sensor and features including automatic brightness and True Tone.
That threshold is far below the published thickness of most slider products here. CloudValley lists 0.6 mm, DICOTA lists 0.85 mm, C-Slide lists 0.8 mm, and Targus lists 0.05 inch, approximately 1.27 mm. Therefore, a listing’s claim that a laptop can close with its cover attached does not override Apple’s device-specific guidance. For a MacBook, install only if you are willing to open the lid before use and remove the cover before closing it, unless you have independently verified that the exact cover is within Apple’s 0.1-mm limit.

1. Match the cover to the camera opening
Measure the camera window and the flat bezel around it, not just the overall laptop or phone. A cover needs a sufficiently flat bonding surface and must slide clear of the lens when open. Phones are especially model-dependent: narrow bezels, curved glass, cases, proximity sensors, and multiple front-facing lenses can leave little room for a conventional rectangle.
For a dual-lens or unusually wide laptop opening, start with a wider design such as the C-Slide Razor Strip. For an ordinary single webcam, a compact slider such as CloudValley, Targus, DICOTA, or a verified equivalent is usually easier to position.
2. Check thickness before considering a MacBook
Do not rely on labels such as “ultra slim” or “laptop-safe.” Find the actual thickness in millimeters or inches and compare it with Apple’s 0.1-mm guidance. If the listing does not state thickness, assume it has not been cleared for leaving on a closed MacBook. A removable cover can still be useful on a MacBook if you remove it before closing the display.
3. Check nearby sensors and the indicator light
A laptop camera assembly may include an activity indicator, ambient-light sensor, infrared camera, or other adjacent hardware. Position the cover so it blocks the intended camera without covering those components. Apple’s warning about ambient-light sensing and True Tone is especially relevant to Mac laptops. If automatic brightness or display behavior changes after installation, remove or reposition the cover.
4. Prefer a slider for regular video calls
A slider provides two clear states: open for a call and closed for privacy. It stays attached instead of requiring you to remove and replace a sticker, which reduces the chance of losing the cover or weakening the adhesive through repeated handling. A permanent opaque sticker can still block the lens, but it is less convenient for frequent camera use.

5. Choose pack size based on the number of devices

Installation and everyday-use checklist
- Identify the camera and nearby sensors. Do not cover a speaker, microphone, ambient-light sensor, infrared lens, or status indicator by mistake.
- Compare measurements. Confirm that the cover fits the flat area around the camera and that the shutter can move fully open and closed.
- Clean and dry the mounting area. Follow the product’s own adhesive instructions and avoid applying over dust, moisture, textured surfaces, or a phone case edge.
- Align before pressing down. The camera should sit behind the shutter opening when the cover is open and be fully blocked when it is closed.
- Test the camera and sensor behavior. Make a test call or open the camera application, then check that the image is clear when open and completely obscured when closed. Confirm that the indicator and display brightness behave normally.
- Handle MacBooks differently. Open the display before using the camera and remove any cover thicker than Apple’s 0.1-mm limit before closing the lid.
- Inspect the adhesive occasionally. If the cover lifts, slides out of alignment, or leaves adhesive around a sensor, stop using it and replace or reposition it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Camera cover versus a screen privacy filter
These products solve different privacy problems. A camera cover blocks the lens so the camera cannot see through it. A screen privacy filter reduces side viewing of information displayed on the screen. It does not block the webcam and should not be presented as a substitute.
If you work with confidential documents, passwords, customer records, or other sensitive information in public, a separate 3M laptop privacy filter may be a useful companion.
