Odoo Community is the best modular alternative, while Dolibarr is the better choice for smaller organizations that value simplicity over deep operational coverage.
However, “free” usually means no mandatory software-license fee for the self-hosted open-source edition. It does not mean free hosting, migration, backups, security, customization, training, upgrades, GST configuration, or accounting review. This guide ranks 15 candidates for Indian SMBs and separates genuinely promising choices from products that should be treated as technical or exploratory evaluations.
What “free and open source” means for an ERP
There are three different things that are often mixed together in ERP comparisons:
| Model | What you receive | What you still pay for |
|---|---|---|
| Open-source self-hosted software | You can download, inspect, modify, and operate the application under its open-source license. | Server or cloud infrastructure, implementation, migration, backups, monitoring, security, upgrades, support, and internal administration. |
| Managed cloud hosting | A provider operates the ERP infrastructure and often handles updates, backups, or support. | A recurring hosting or service fee, even when the underlying application is open source. |
| Free trial or freemium plan | Temporary or restricted access to a hosted product. | Production use, additional users, storage, modules, integrations, or continued access may require payment. |
ERPNext’s support information makes this distinction directly: the software can be free and open source while engineering and support services remain paid services. A realistic budget must therefore consider total cost of ownership rather than only the license line.

The first three deserve the deepest evaluation for most Indian SMBs. Ranks 4 through 15 are legitimate candidates for particular technical or operational profiles, but they should not be assumed to be India-ready merely because they appear in an open-source ERP list.
1. ERPNext: best overall for most Indian SMBs
ERPNext is the strongest overall shortlist candidate for a business that wants one broad open-source platform rather than separate applications for each department. Its functional scope includes accounting, invoicing, sales, purchasing, stock, manufacturing, projects, POS, HR, payroll, and related operations. It is presented as fully open source, and its official project materials identify GPL-licensed software and capabilities such as order management and manufacturing.
ERPNext is particularly relevant to Indian businesses because its address model can handle GSTIN and GST-state information at the address level. That matters when a customer or supplier has registrations in multiple Indian states, or when the company operates multiple branches and warehouses.
Best fit: trading companies, distributors, service businesses, light-to-medium manufacturers, and SMB groups that need multi-company or multi-location operations.
Why choose it: ERPNext offers a coherent end-to-end workflow: quotation to sales order, delivery, invoice, payment, stock movement, purchasing, and accounting. Manufacturing and project features also make it more suitable than a basic invoicing or accounting package when the business expects to grow.
What to check: confirm every GST scenario in a proof of concept, including inter-state transactions, credit notes, returns, e-invoicing, and reporting. Also decide who will manage hosting, backups, security patches, customizations, and upgrades. The software’s open-source status does not remove those responsibilities.
If your team wants a faster route to a self-managed installation, an ERPNext AWS deployment can be evaluated through an AWS Marketplace AMI. Treat that as an infrastructure and deployment option—not as free hosting. Marketplace deployment, AWS usage, implementation, and support may all create separate charges.
2. Odoo Community: best modular ecosystem alternative
Odoo Community is the open-source edition of the wider Odoo business platform. It is attractive to SMBs that want to activate only the applications they need and potentially expand into CRM, sales, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing, website management, ecommerce, or marketplace integrations.

Odoo’s India documentation for version 18.0 describes functionality for Indian accounting, e-invoicing, e-way bills, GSTIN status checking, GSTR reporting, and Indian tax reports. It also documents a key implementation detail: connected Indian tax workflows require configuration of a GST Suvidha Provider and NIC portal API credentials for e-invoicing, e-way bills, and GST return services. See the official Odoo India localization documentation for the documented setup requirements.
Best fit: companies that value a modular application ecosystem, CRM and sales automation, ecommerce, website integration, or extensive customization options.
Why choose it: Odoo can bring customer management, sales, inventory, purchasing, manufacturing, and online operations into one platform. Its ecosystem can be useful when the business needs integrations beyond traditional accounting.

- Generate Reports on Sales, Invoices, Inventory & More
- PLUS! Data Backup, Label Creation & Credit Card Processing
What to check: do not assume that every application or India-specific capability is included in Community. Confirm whether a required feature belongs to Community, Enterprise, or a third-party module. Check the module’s license, maintenance status, compatibility with the selected Odoo version, upgrade path, and ability to work with the chosen GSP and NIC services.
3. Dolibarr: best for simplicity and lighter operations
Dolibarr is a modular open-source ERP and CRM designed for freelancers, SMEs, larger organizations, foundations, and associations. Its central advantage is that an organization can enable only the modules it needs instead of starting with a heavily configured enterprise suite. It supports on-premise and cloud deployment, extensibility, and a partner ecosystem.
The project repository identifies GPL-3+ licensing and functions including contacts, suppliers, invoices, orders, stock, accounting, HR, and manufacturing. That makes Dolibarr a credible option for a smaller company whose primary needs are customer records, quotations, order processing, invoicing, payments, inventory, and perhaps basic manufacturing.
Best fit: smaller service companies, wholesalers, agencies, associations, and straightforward product businesses that want a less intimidating system.
Why choose it: Dolibarr can be easier to scope and operate when the company does not need complex production planning, extensive automation, or a large application ecosystem.

What to check: generic accounting capability is not proof of Indian GST readiness. Test GST rates, HSN/SAC, state-wise registrations, e-invoice and e-way-bill workflows, payroll, statutory reports, returns, and reconciliation module by module. A simple ERP can become expensive if many India-specific functions must be custom-built.
4. Apache OFBiz: best for technically capable customization teams
Apache OFBiz is an Apache top-level project and an open-source ERP framework with enterprise-wide business features. It is especially relevant to organizations with Java engineering capability, unusual workflows, ecommerce requirements, or a willingness to build and maintain a tailored platform.
OFBiz is better understood as a development-oriented foundation than as the quickest out-of-the-box ERP for a typical Indian SMB. It can be powerful when the organization’s processes do not fit conventional ERP screens, but that flexibility brings responsibility for solution design, testing, integrations, localization, documentation, and long-term maintenance.
Choose it when: the company already has capable Java developers and regards the ERP as a strategic software platform. Do not choose it solely because the license cost is zero.
5. Tryton: best for structured modular implementations
Tryton is a technically credible modular ERP candidate for accounting, inventory, sales, purchasing, production, and project-oriented workflows. It suits organizations that value a structured ERP core and disciplined implementation rather than a quick collection of loosely connected plugins.
Tryton deserves consideration from technically capable SMEs, but an India-first buyer should verify GST, e-invoicing, e-way bills, payroll, reporting, localization quality, and local implementation availability before ranking it above ERPNext or Odoo. A successful Tryton deployment may depend more heavily on the selected implementer and the amount of localization work required.

6. metasfresh: best for distribution and supply-chain evaluation
metasfresh is an open-source ERP candidate with a strong emphasis on distribution, procurement, inventory, warehouse operations, and supply-chain processes. It may be a better conceptual fit than a general accounting package for a distributor that needs operational depth, product movement, purchasing control, and warehouse visibility.
Indian distributors should require a proof of concept covering GST, state-wise warehouses, transfers, tax-inclusive pricing, e-invoices, e-way bills, reporting, language, hosting, and support. Verify the availability of an implementation partner with experience in the exact version and industry before treating metasfresh as a production recommendation.
7. Axelor ERP: best for modern modular business applications
Axelor is a modular open-source business platform commonly evaluated for accounting, invoicing, inventory, purchasing, CRM, HR, project management, and manufacturing. Its appeal is the ability to activate selected business domains and build a broader application suite around them.
For an Indian SMB, the key question is not whether Axelor has generic accounting or inventory screens. It is whether the proposed version and modules can handle the company’s GST, e-invoice, e-way-bill, payroll, audit-trail, and reporting requirements without creating an unmaintainable customization layer. Validate local partner depth and statutory workflows during a live demonstration.
8. EasyERP: exploratory integration-oriented candidate
EasyERP appears in current free and open-source ERP comparisons as a modular business-management option with integration and dashboard capabilities. It may be worth an early evaluation when connecting multiple systems is more important than selecting a mature India-localized suite.
Before production use, require a live demonstration, verify the current release and repository activity, review security and documentation, inspect the license, and test Indian GST scenarios with realistic data. A dashboard or integration claim should not be treated as evidence of statutory compliance.

BlueSeer is commonly considered among open-source ERP options for manufacturing and operational workflows. It may interest a technically capable manufacturer that wants to investigate production, inventory, and operational reporting.
It should remain a technical evaluation until the vendor or project demonstrates Indian accounting, GST, e-invoicing, e-way bills, payroll, audit controls, and practical support. Manufacturers should also test bills of material, work orders, production issues, scrap, inventory valuation, purchase receipts, and finished-goods dispatches rather than relying on a feature list.
10. WP ERP: best for WordPress-centered organizations
WP ERP is a WordPress-based business-management option that brings functions such as HR, CRM, accounting, and project management into a WordPress ecosystem. It can be reasonable for a small organization already committed to WordPress and needing basic business functions alongside its website.
It should not automatically be treated as a replacement for an operations-heavy ERP such as ERPNext or Odoo. Test inventory, purchasing, sales, accounting controls, tax reporting, permissions, backups, and data separation carefully if the business sells physical products or operates multiple locations.

11. xTuple PostBooks: accounting and distribution candidate
xTuple PostBooks is a long-standing open-source ERP and accounting candidate for evaluating accounting, inventory, purchasing, sales, and distribution workflows. It may appeal to organizations that prefer a traditional ERP structure and want to investigate a broad operational core.

Before selecting it in India, confirm current project maintenance, supported deployment options, release activity, localization, integrations, and the availability of implementation expertise. Also establish whether the desired functions are in the open-source edition or require a paid service or edition.
12. inoERP: technically driven customization research
inoERP is included in open-source ERP directories and comparison lists as a lightweight ERP candidate. It may be useful to a small technical team researching a customizable foundation rather than a fully validated India-ready product.
Explicitly review current project activity, security posture, documentation, backup and upgrade procedures, accounting behavior, permissions, audit trails, and India-specific compliance before moving beyond a sandbox. A small codebase can be attractive, but it can also mean fewer available implementers and integrations.
13. OpenPro: feature-breadth research candidate
OpenPro is listed among free and open-source ERP options with broad business-management coverage. It may deserve a place on a longlist when a company wants to compare more than accounting alone.
Verify which modules are genuinely open source and free in the intended deployment. Separate the downloadable core from vendor services, paid editions, hosted plans, proprietary extensions, and support. Then test the exact Indian workflows required by the business rather than choosing on feature breadth alone.
14. webERP: lightweight accounting and inventory
webERP is a browser-based open-source accounting and ERP candidate for smaller businesses needing relatively lightweight invoicing, purchasing, sales, accounting, and inventory workflows.
It may be suitable when requirements are narrow and the company has technical help available for customization. Modern Indian GST, e-invoicing, e-way bills, payroll, manufacturing, advanced permissions, reconciliation, and workflow automation may require additional tools or development, so validate those areas before adoption.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems15. JFire: niche technical evaluation
JFire is a Java-based business-management candidate appearing in free and open-source ERP comparison lists. It is most relevant to technically experienced teams researching niche ERP architectures or unusual implementation possibilities.
For a typical Indian SMB, the validation burden is high: confirm current maintenance, release activity, documentation, security, Indian localization, hosting, integrations, and production support. It should not outrank the first three options without a very specific technical reason.
India-specific ERP proof-of-concept checklist
Indian tax and payroll requirements are where many apparently free ERP choices become expensive. Require the shortlisted system to demonstrate the following using your own representative transactions:
- Registrations and locations: create GSTIN and state-wise registrations for the company, customers, suppliers, branches, and warehouses. Verify address-level state selection and multi-state inventory transfers.
- Tax calculations: test CGST, SGST, IGST, cess, reverse charge, exempt, nil-rated, and export transactions. Include tax-inclusive pricing and products or services using both HSN and SAC.
- Sales documents: create quotations, sales orders, deliveries, invoices, credit notes, debit notes, sales returns, and cancelled documents. Check numbering, tax lines, inventory impact, and accounting entries.
- E-invoicing: test generation, cancellation, QR-code handling, IRN retrieval, error messages, retries, and the treatment of cancelled or amended transactions where applicable.
- E-way bills: create an e-way bill from a sales or delivery workflow and test stock-linked movement, transporter details, vehicle changes, cancellation, and failed API responses.
- GST reporting: review GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B or equivalent reports, export formats, reconciliation procedures, exceptions, and the process for correcting source transactions.
- Inventory: test inter-state warehouse transfers, batch or serial tracking if needed, returns, stock adjustments, valuation, landed costs, and the effect of tax transactions on inventory and accounts.
- Payroll: if payroll is in scope, test PF, ESI, professional tax, labour-welfare fund, state-specific rules, payslips, deductions, arrears, and statutory reports. Do not assume that an ERP’s HR module includes Indian payroll compliance.
- Controls: verify role permissions, approval workflows, audit trails, document history, period closing, data export, backups, restoration, and separation of duties.
Odoo’s official India documentation illustrates why this testing matters: accounting, e-invoicing, e-way bills, stock-linked e-way bills, GST reporting, and tax reports are documented as separate capabilities, and connected services require GSP and NIC API configuration. The same principle applies to other ERPs: a generic “tax module” label is not a compliance guarantee.

Where native support is incomplete, budget for GST ERP integration or specialist configuration. Do not assume that an external integration will automatically make every ERP’s accounting, inventory, and reporting data consistent.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Self-hosted versus managed cloud
Self-hosting gives the business more control over data, deployment, extensions, and infrastructure. It can be economical for a technically capable team, but the company becomes responsible for operating-system updates, database health, HTTPS, access control, monitoring, backups, disaster recovery, email delivery, security patches, and application upgrades.
Managed hosting reduces infrastructure work and may provide a clearer support path. It is still a paid service in most cases, and the buyer must clarify backup retention, restoration testing, upgrade timing, data export, support hours, customization policy, and what happens if the provider closes or changes plans.
SMBs that want control without operating every server component may evaluate managed ERP hosting with backup and monitoring. Compare the full service scope rather than comparing only the monthly server price.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The real cost of a free ERP
A self-hosted open-source ERP can eliminate recurring per-user software-license fees, but the following costs remain possible:
- Cloud VM, database, storage, bandwidth, domains, email, and SSL infrastructure.
- Initial installation, configuration, company and chart-of-accounts setup, and tax configuration.
- Data migration from spreadsheets, Tally, legacy ERP systems, or disconnected applications.
- Custom reports, workflows, print formats, integrations, mobile access, and statutory interfaces.
- Backups, monitoring, security reviews, vulnerability response, and disaster recovery.
- User training, internal administration, documentation, and process redesign.
- Version upgrades, regression testing, custom-module maintenance, and support retainers.
- Professional accounting or tax review of configuration and statutory output.
For most small companies, the cheapest sustainable choice is not necessarily the system with the lowest license cost. It is usually the ERP that fits existing processes closely enough to minimize customization while offering a dependable upgrade and support path.
Most SMBs moving from spreadsheets, Tally, or disconnected applications should budget for an ERP implementation partner or experienced consultant when the project involves migration, multi-state GST, payroll, manufacturing, integrations, or multiple legal entities. Ask for a written scope, migration assumptions, acceptance tests, training plan, backup ownership, upgrade policy, and post-launch support terms.
How to choose among the shortlist
- Choose ERPNext first if you need a broad integrated ERP, India-oriented address and GST handling, multi-company operations, inventory, manufacturing, projects, POS, or payroll, and you can arrange reliable implementation and operations.
- Choose Odoo Community if modularity, CRM, website, ecommerce, marketplace integrations, and a large ecosystem matter more than having a simple deployment. Confirm the edition and every third-party module.
- Choose Dolibarr if your operation is comparatively straightforward and you want to avoid configuring a much larger suite. Spend extra time on Indian GST and payroll validation.
- Consider metasfresh for distribution and warehouse-heavy businesses, or BlueSeer for manufacturing, but require a serious proof of concept and local compliance review.
- Consider OFBiz, Tryton, Axelor, or inoERP when you have technical capability or unusual requirements that justify a more customized implementation.
- Treat EasyERP, WP ERP, xTuple PostBooks, OpenPro, webERP, and JFire as evaluation candidates until current maintenance, licensing, security, India localization, and support are independently verified.
Do not select an ERP from a feature-count table. Select the product that can complete your highest-risk transactions correctly, preserve an upgrade path, and be operated by the people you actually have.

A practical implementation sequence
- Document the current process: map purchasing, receiving, stock movement, sales, invoicing, collections, payments, returns, accounting close, payroll, and statutory reporting.
- Clean the data: standardize customer and supplier names, GSTINs, addresses, product codes, units, HSN/SAC, opening balances, stock, receivables, and payables.
- Build a sandbox: configure one company, one or two states, a representative warehouse, tax rules, users, roles, and approval paths.
- Run the compliance POC: use successful and failed GST, e-invoice, e-way-bill, return, export, reverse-charge, and credit-note scenarios.
- Test operational edge cases: partial deliveries, purchase returns, stock shortages, price changes, batch or serial tracking, cancelled invoices, duplicate imports, and month-end closing.
- Test technical recovery: perform a backup, restore it to a separate environment, export critical data, test permissions, and document the upgrade procedure.
- Pilot with real users: start with one branch, warehouse, or process. Measure transaction accuracy, closing time, support requests, and user adoption before expanding.
- Train and document: prepare role-specific procedures for sales, purchase, warehouse, accounts, HR, and administrators. Plan ERP training for small business users rather than relying on a one-hour product demonstration.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling a hosted trial “free ERP software” without checking what happens after the trial.
- Assuming open source means zero operating cost or zero implementation work.
- Assuming a generic accounting module automatically supports Indian GST, e-invoicing, e-way bills, or payroll.
- Choosing Odoo Community without confirming whether required modules are Enterprise-only or third-party.
- Customizing before documenting the standard process and testing whether configuration is sufficient.
- Ignoring backups, restore tests, audit trails, access controls, and upgrade ownership.
- Migrating dirty master data and then blaming the ERP for inaccurate reports.
- Selecting a niche project without checking current releases, security activity, documentation, and local expertise.
- Comparing only license fees instead of implementation, infrastructure, training, support, and upgrade costs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a self-hosted open-source ERP completely free?
Usually not. The software license may have no mandatory fee, but hosting, backups, implementation, migration, training, security, support, customization, upgrades, and statutory-accounting review can all cost money. A free trial or free hosted tier is also not the same as a permanently free production deployment.
Which free open-source ERP is best for an Indian SMB?
ERPNext is the strongest general starting point for most Indian SMBs because it combines broad accounting and operational coverage with India-relevant GSTIN and state handling. Odoo Community is a strong modular alternative, and Dolibarr is better when the business wants a simpler system. The final choice should follow a proof of concept using the company’s actual GST, inventory, reporting, and payroll scenarios.
Is Odoo Community enough for Indian GST compliance?
It may support the required workflows, but you must verify the exact edition, modules, version, and service configuration. Odoo’s India documentation describes separate capabilities for accounting, e-invoicing, e-way bills, GST reporting, and tax reports, and connected services require GSP and NIC API credentials. Do not assume that installing Community alone guarantees statutory compliance.
Do all the ERPs in this list support Indian e-invoicing and e-way bills?
No. ERPNext and Odoo deserve the deepest India-focused evaluation, but even there configuration and connected services matter. For Dolibarr and the lower-ranked candidates, e-invoicing, e-way bills, GST reporting, and payroll must be demonstrated or confirmed module by module. Generic accounting functionality is not enough.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Should a small company hire an ERP consultant?
For a simple single-company deployment, a capable internal administrator may be sufficient. Professional help becomes more valuable when migrating from spreadsheets or Tally, configuring multi-state GST, connecting e-invoicing services, implementing manufacturing, managing payroll, integrating other systems, or designing approvals and audit controls.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Start with ERPNext for the best overall India-first open-source shortlist, Odoo Community for the broadest modular ecosystem, and Dolibarr for a simpler operation. Treat the remaining systems as specialized or exploratory candidates unless a live proof of concept confirms current maintenance, licensing, Indian GST workflows, security, data recovery, and implementation support. The winning ERP is not the one with the lowest license fee; it is the one your business can run accurately, securely, and affordably after implementation.
