The Greek Ministry of Culture identified the finds, which include the ship’s lookout bell, a port-side signal lamp and observation binoculars. The objects are being conserved in Athens and are intended for a future museum display in Piraeus.
What artifacts were recovered from Britannic?
The Greek Ministry of Culture says the recovered objects include items from several parts of the ship:
- The bell from the ship’s lookout or observation post.
- A signal lamp from the port side, also described in Associated Press reporting as a navigation light.
- A pair of observation binoculars.
- Portable objects from first- and second-class spaces.
- Detached ceramic tiles from the Turkish bath.
These are identified shipboard objects, not an unidentified treasure hoard. The Ministry said some objects included in the initial recovery plan could not be raised because of their position and state of preservation. The Ministry’s account describes the recovery and the condition of the site.
How did the recovery operation work?
The Greek Ministry of Culture approved an operation that ran from May 6 to 13, 2025. Organized by British historian Simon Mills, founder of the Britannic Foundation, it involved 11 professional deep divers using closed-circuit diving equipment. A three-person team from the Ministry’s Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities supervised and coordinated the work, received the finds and began initial conservation.

The wreck lies at more than 120 meters deep. The Ministry said currents, depth and low visibility made conditions particularly challenging. Recovered objects were lifted with air bags, placed in prepared containers and cleaned of marine organisms before conservation continued in Athens.
Why did Britannic sink?
Britannic was one of White Star Line’s Olympic-class liners, built alongside Olympic and Titanic. During World War I, the British Admiralty requisitioned it for use as a hospital ship. It struck a German mine off Kea while heading toward Lemnos and sank in November 1916.

AP says the ship sank in less than an hour and that lifeboats were struck by the still-turning propellers.
