Combat loyal wingman drones are unmanned combat aircraft designed to fly with crewed fighters, extending their sensors, weapons, electronic warfare, and decoy options while placing fewer human pilots at risk. The leading examples are MQ-28A Ghost Bat, XQ-58A Valkyrie, YFQ-42A, and YFQ-44A, but most remain developmental rather than operational.

The phrase “loyal wingman” is useful, but it is also applied too broadly. A jet-powered unmanned combat aircraft is not automatically a loyal wingman: the defining feature is designed-in cooperation with crewed aircraft, usually with a human assigning missions and retaining authority over lethal decisions.

This list therefore separates four strongly evidenced collaborative combat aircraft from adjacent unmanned fighters and earlier technology demonstrators. The status descriptions reflect publicly available information as of August 16, 2026; classified capabilities and later program changes may not be visible.

Key takeaways

  • The most mature publicly demonstrated loyal-wingman program is Australia’s MQ-28A Ghost Bat, which has conducted integrated testing with an E-7A Wedgetail and F/A-18F Super Hornet.
  • The U.S. Air Force’s YFQ-42A Dark Merlin and YFQ-44A Fury are official CCA prototypes, not established operational squadron aircraft.
  • Autonomous flight and mission execution do not necessarily mean autonomous weapons release; the U.S. Air Force said human control remained in the YFQ-44A AIM-120 live-fire test.
  • Kızılelma, Anka-3, GJ-11, and S-70 are important unmanned combat-aircraft candidates, but public evidence is less conclusive about routine fighter-escort missions.
  • Taranis and nEUROn are influential demonstrators, not operational loyal wingmen.

What are combat loyal wingman drones?

Combat loyal wingman drones are unmanned aircraft intended to operate alongside crewed combat aircraft under human supervision. Their jobs may include scouting ahead, extending a fighter’s radar and electronic-support sensors, jamming air defenses, carrying weapons, acting as decoys, relaying communications, or accepting risks that would be unacceptable for a crewed fighter.

A loyal wingman is therefore a role and an operating concept as much as it is an aircraft type. The aircraft may be remotely supervised, highly autonomous, or capable of operating independently for parts of a mission. The essential question is whether the design supports crewed-uncrewed teaming, rather than merely asking whether the aircraft can fly without a pilot onboard.

What is the difference between a drone, UCAV, loyal wingman, and CCA?

A drone or unmanned aircraft system is the broadest category. A UCAV, or unmanned combat aerial vehicle, is an unmanned aircraft designed for combat missions. Loyal wingman is an informal term that emphasizes cooperation with a crewed aircraft. Collaborative combat aircraft, or CCA, is the current U.S. term for fighter-like unmanned aircraft intended to operate with crewed aircraft in contested environments.

The categories overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A stealth UCAV built mainly for independent strike missions may be a valuable combat drone without being a loyal wingman. Conversely, a CCA may spend much of a mission scouting, jamming, or carrying decoys rather than firing weapons.

Term Meaning What makes it different
Drone/UAS Broad term for an unmanned aircraft and its control system May be unarmed, remotely piloted, or autonomous
UCAV Unmanned combat aerial vehicle Designed to perform combat missions
Loyal wingman Unmanned aircraft cooperating with a crewed aircraft Emphasizes manned-unmanned teaming
CCA U.S. term for an autonomous or semi-autonomous unmanned fighter-like aircraft Emphasizes contested-airspace teaming and operational integration

What do loyal wingman aircraft actually do?

Loyal wingman missions are broader than “protecting a fighter.” Protection may mean preventing the enemy from finding the crewed aircraft, forcing an adversary to divide its attention, suppressing a radar, or creating an additional weapons threat.

  • Scout: fly ahead and search for aircraft, missiles, radars, or air-defense systems.
  • Extend sensors: place radar, infrared, or electronic-support sensors closer to a threat than the crewed fighter can safely go.
  • Conduct electronic warfare: jam or deceive enemy radars and communications.
  • Act as a decoy: imitate an additional aircraft or provoke an enemy into revealing its position.
  • Escort: accompany and help defend crewed aircraft.
  • Carry weapons: launch air-to-air or air-to-ground weapons following authorized mission rules.
  • Relay communications: extend the network between aircraft, command nodes, and ground stations.
  • Provide attritable mass: enter dangerous airspace with a higher acceptable risk of loss than a crewed fighter.

What are the 10 leading loyal wingman and adjacent combat drones?

The following ranking is not an objective measure of which aircraft would win a fight. The order reflects a combination of crewed-uncrewed teaming, flight-test maturity, demonstrated autonomy, weapons or sensor integration, survivability, and the likelihood of becoming an operational system.

1. Boeing MQ-28A Ghost Bat — Australia

Classification: genuine loyal wingman and collaborative combat aircraft.
Status as of August 16, 2026: advanced testing and operationalization; not yet a mature mass-service fleet.

The MQ-28A Ghost Bat is the clearest public example of the loyal-wingman concept moving from a presentation model toward an integrated military capability. Boeing describes the aircraft as an uncrewed CCA that complements crewed and uncrewed aircraft, fuses sensor information, performs intelligence and early-warning missions, and adds combat mass. The Boeing MQ-28A official description lists a manufacturer-claimed maximum speed of up to Mach 0.9, range of more than 2,000 nautical miles, ceiling above 40,000 feet, and maximum takeoff weight of up to 12,000 pounds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Boeing and the Royal Australian Air Force reported that an MQ-28 teamed with an E-7A Wedgetail and F/A-18F Super Hornet during a December 9, 2025 test involving an autonomous air-to-air weapon engagement. The test is an important integration milestone, but it is not evidence that the Ghost Bat has become a routinely deployed, independent combat fleet.

The Ghost Bat matters because its publicly described development includes aircraft integration, operational exercises, and weapons-related demonstrations. Boeing’s description that the aircraft could cost roughly one-tenth as much as a crewed platform is a design and affordability objective, not a verified program-wide acquisition price.

2. Kratos XQ-58A Valkyrie — United States

Classification: loyal-wingman demonstrator and adaptable tactical UCAV.
Status: flight-tested and under continuing military development.

The XQ-58A Valkyrie is a runway-independent, high-subsonic unmanned aircraft designed for long range, maneuverability, modular payloads, and comparatively low-cost production. Kratos’ XQ-58A product sheet gives public specifications of approximately 30 feet in length, a 27-foot wingspan, 6,000 pounds maximum launch weight, 600 pounds of internal payload capacity, Mach 0.72 cruise speed, and an operating altitude extending to 45,000 feet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kratos reported that a Valkyrie flew in concert with two F-35 aircraft and demonstrated an electronic-attack capability during a 2024 U.S. Marine Corps test. The company describes the aircraft as able to act as a loyal wingman, operate independently, or operate in swarms in the relevant test and development context.

The Valkyrie illustrates the attritable side of the concept. A commander could use such an aircraft for electronic attack, sensing, decoying, or weapons carriage in airspace where losing a crewed fighter would be unacceptable. The XQ-58A is not necessarily a dedicated escort; its strength is flexibility across several mission packages.

3. General Atomics YFQ-42A Dark Merlin — United States

Classification: official U.S. Air Force CCA prototype.
Former identity: XQ-67A.
Status: flight testing and experimental operational work.

The U.S. Air Force designated the General Atomics CCA as the YFQ-42A in March 2025. The Air Force designation announcement explains the designation as a prototype fighter-type unmanned aircraft: “Y” indicates prototype, “F” indicates fighter, and “Q” indicates an unmanned aircraft.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The aircraft developed from the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Low-Cost Autonomous Aircraft Platform Sharing, or LCAAPS, effort. AFRL compared the common-platform idea with using a shared automotive chassis for different vehicle types. The XQ-67A first flew in February 2024 before becoming the YFQ-42A, according to the AFRL program overview.

By July 2026, YFQ-42A aircraft were being used in an Air Force Experimental Operations Unit exercise at Creech Air Force Base. The exercise examined tactics, techniques, procedures, logistics concepts, and ways to integrate CCAs with crewed aircraft, according to the Air Force Creech exercise report.

The YFQ-42A is significant because it represents an attempt to turn the loyal wingman from a one-off technology demonstrator into a formal procurement and operational category. It remains a prototype and test aircraft, and public performance specifications are limited.

4. Anduril YFQ-44A Fury — United States

Classification: official U.S. Air Force CCA prototype.
Status: developmental testing, weapons integration, and operational experimentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The YFQ-44A Fury is Anduril’s entry in the U.S. Air Force CCA program. The Air Force formally designated the Fury alongside the YFQ-42A in March 2025, describing both as uncrewed fighters intended to provide autonomous capability and crewed-uncrewed teaming in contested environments.

In July 2026, the Air Force reported that a YFQ-44A conducted a live-fire test involving an AIM-120 against a digital target. The Air Force live-fire report stated that the weapon-release decision remained under human control, even though the aircraft could execute the employment sequence autonomously within pilot-defined parameters.

The Fury is therefore a useful example of the difference between autonomous behavior and autonomous lethal authorization. A system can navigate, manage a route, identify a track, and carry out parts of a weapon-employment sequence without being permitted to independently decide when to release a weapon against a real target.

5. Baykar Kızılelma — Türkiye

Classification: jet-powered unmanned combat aircraft with potential loyal-wingman functions.
Status: developmental flight-test program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Baykar describes Kızılelma as an unmanned combat aircraft rather than merely a conventional remotely piloted drone. The manufacturer’s Kızılelma program page emphasizes high-speed flight, low observability, autonomous operation, air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, and operation in contested airspace.

Kızılelma belongs on a broad list of loyal-wingman candidates because a fighter-sized unmanned aircraft with those ambitions could perform escort, air-superiority, strike, or sensing roles around crewed aircraft. Public evidence, however, is not sufficient to say that Kızılelma has already become a routine loyal wingman for a specific crewed fighter. It is more accurate to call Kızılelma a loyal-wingman candidate or adjacent unmanned fighter.

6. TAI Anka-3 — Türkiye

Classification: stealth-oriented unmanned combat aircraft and potential crewed-uncrewed teaming platform.
Status: developmental.

Anka-3 is a tailless, flying-wing unmanned combat aircraft developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries. Its configuration is intended to reduce detectability and support reconnaissance, strike, and other missions. The TAI Anka-3 product section provides the relevant manufacturer context for the aircraft.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Anka-3 shows that the loyal-wingman field is not limited to small escort drones. Some programs are pursuing larger, stealth-oriented UCAVs that could operate ahead of crewed aircraft, carry weapons, or contribute sensors and electronic effects.

Publicly available information does not establish a mature doctrine in which Anka-3 routinely scouts for and protects fighter jets. The careful description is potential collaborative combat aircraft, not fielded loyal wingman.

7. BAE Systems Taranis — United Kingdom

Classification: unmanned combat-aircraft technology demonstrator.
Status: completed demonstrator program; not an operational loyal wingman.

Taranis was a British stealth unmanned combat-aircraft demonstrator intended to explore autonomous navigation, low observability, mission management, and strike-related technologies. Taranis helped establish technical knowledge for later autonomous combat-aircraft projects, particularly in stealth shaping, mission autonomy, and high-end unmanned aircraft design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Taranis should be treated as a predecessor and technology demonstrator rather than a deployable fighter escort. The program was not publicly fielded as an aircraft routinely protecting Royal Air Force fighters, and the existence of a successful demonstrator does not prove that an operational loyal-wingman capability followed immediately.

8. Dassault nEUROn — Europe

Classification: multinational unmanned combat-aircraft demonstrator.
Status: completed technology demonstrator; not an operational loyal wingman.

nEUROn is a European stealth combat-drone demonstrator led by Dassault Aviation with partner nations. Dassault’s official nEUROn description presents the program as an effort to develop technologies associated with future unmanned combat aircraft, including low observability, autonomous flight, and strike missions.

nEUROn is important because it demonstrated a European route toward advanced unmanned combat aircraft and contributed to the technology base surrounding future air-combat programs. It was not built and fielded as a dedicated loyal wingman for a particular fighter squadron, so it belongs in the related-demonstrator category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. China’s GJ-11 Sharp Sword

Classification: stealth unmanned combat aircraft and possible CCA-adjacent platform.
Status: limited public information; operational details remain opaque.

The GJ-11 Sharp Sword is a Chinese flying-wing unmanned combat aircraft associated with reconnaissance and strike missions. Public reporting and imagery have connected the aircraft with broader Chinese work on autonomous combat aircraft and possible crewed-uncrewed teaming, but those observations do not establish the exact operational role or maturity of the system.

The GJ-11 is strategically important because China may be pursuing a family of unmanned combat aircraft rather than a single Western-style CCA program. The Congressional Research Service background on unmanned aircraft systems provides wider context for loyal-wingman concepts and unmanned combat-aircraft development.

Claims about routine fighter escort, sensor performance, secure networking, weapons effectiveness, and combat readiness should not be presented as verified unless supported by a current official Chinese source or strong independent evidence. Parade imagery can show that an aircraft exists; it cannot by itself prove an operational fighter-teaming capability.

10. Russia’s S-70 Okhotnik

Classification: heavy stealth-oriented UCAV and potential companion aircraft for crewed fighters.
Status: developmental and operationally unconfirmed.

The S-70 Okhotnik is a large Russian unmanned combat aircraft commonly discussed as a possible companion to the Su-57 fighter. Its size and weapons-carrying design suggest a role broader than that of a small expendable scout. A large aircraft could extend the crewed fighter’s sensors, carry weapons, or conduct missions in heavily defended airspace.

Public information about Okhotnik’s autonomy, networking, and actual fighter-teaming capability remains limited. Claims about Su-57 cooperation should therefore be described as reported intent or testing, not as established combat doctrine. The aircraft should not be called routinely operational without a current, authoritative confirmation.

Which aircraft are genuine loyal wingmen?

The strongest public evidence supports grouping the 10 aircraft into three maturity and mission categories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Category Aircraft Why they fit
Confirmed or strongly evidenced CCA/wingman programs MQ-28A, XQ-58A, YFQ-42A, YFQ-44A Designed or tested around crewed-uncrewed teaming, autonomous functions, and contested-airspace missions
Unmanned fighter candidates Kızılelma, Anka-3, GJ-11, S-70 Fighter-sized or stealth-oriented combat aircraft that could support teaming, but whose routine escort role is not sufficiently verified publicly
Earlier technology demonstrators Taranis, nEUROn Important programs for autonomy, stealth, and unmanned combat-aircraft technology, but not operational wingmen

Are loyal wingman drones truly autonomous?

Loyal wingman autonomy is usually layered rather than absolute. A human may assign the mission, geographic boundaries, threat restrictions, or engagement conditions while the aircraft handles navigation, formation behavior, sensor management, and parts of tactical execution.

  1. Human mission assignment: a pilot or mission commander establishes objectives and constraints.
  2. Autonomous flight: the aircraft follows routes, maintains formation, avoids hazards, and manages fuel or recovery behavior.
  3. Sensor processing: onboard systems detect, classify, and prioritize objects or emissions.
  4. Tactical recommendation or execution: the aircraft may suggest an action or perform an authorized maneuver within preset limits.
  5. Weapons authority: human authorization may still be required before a weapon is released.

The July 2026 U.S. Air Force YFQ-44A test illustrates the distinction. The aircraft autonomously executed parts of an AIM-120 employment sequence against a digital target, while the weapon-release decision remained under human control. “Autonomous” should therefore not be treated as a synonym for an unrestricted independent fighter pilot.

How many wingmen can one fighter control?

There is no universal public answer for how many loyal wingmen one fighter can control. The practical ratio depends on mission complexity, autonomy, data-link bandwidth, cockpit workload, and whether an airborne command-and-control aircraft or ground station shares the management burden.

One crewed fighter might supervise several unmanned aircraft performing relatively simple tasks, but that does not mean the pilot can manually direct every aircraft, sensor, maneuver, and weapon at once. A formation tested with multiple unmanned aircraft is also not automatically a certified operational control ratio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Ghost Bat’s testing with an E-7A Wedgetail and F/A-18F Super Hornet is important for this reason. The controlling architecture may distribute battle management among fighters, airborne early-warning aircraft, ground stations, and other network nodes rather than relying on one fighter cockpit alone.

Do loyal wingmen replace fighter jets?

No. The intended model is generally one or more unmanned aircraft coordinating with crewed fighters, not eliminating crewed aircraft entirely. Human-piloted fighters remain valuable as decision-making, sensing, command, and weapons platforms, while unmanned aircraft add mass and risk tolerance.

Potential advantages include more sensors per formation, additional weapons and decoys, greater stand-off distance, distributed electronic warfare, and the ability to send an unmanned aircraft into a more dangerous position. The approach may also reduce the number of crewed aircraft required for a given mission, but it does not remove the need for command, maintenance, training, communications, and human judgment.

Are loyal wingman aircraft cheap?

Loyal wingman aircraft are intended to be more affordable or attritable than crewed fighters, but “cheap” is not a reliable description of the complete military system. The total cost includes the aircraft, propulsion, sensors, electronic-warfare payloads, weapons, secure communications, mission-control software, ground equipment, training, maintenance, and replacement capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important comparison is therefore not simply the purchase price of one drone. The more useful question is how much combat power the entire system can generate, how quickly lost aircraft can be replaced, and how many personnel and support facilities are required to sustain operations.

  • Built-in Propeller Guard for Safety - Super-sturdy! With integrated propeller guards, the drone is more robust and durable, allowing you to fly more freely in various scenarios.

Affordability also creates trade-offs. Adding a more capable radar, electronic-warfare system, weapons, fuel, or low-observable features increases weight, cost, and maintenance demands. A drone optimized as a scout may have different range and maneuverability from one configured as an escort or weapons carrier.

What happens if a loyal wingman loses communications?

A credible loyal wingman cannot assume that its data link, GPS, satellite communications, or controlling aircraft will always remain available. The system needs preplanned behavior for communications loss, navigation interference, cyberattack, or the loss of its human controller.

Possible behaviors include returning to base, orbiting at a defined location, continuing a limited mission, switching to another control node, performing self-protection, or executing a controlled abort. The correct behavior depends on fuel, threat level, mission rules, and whether the aircraft can distinguish a temporary outage from hostile spoofing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Communications resilience is therefore as important as airframe performance. An aircraft that flies well in a clean test environment may still be unsuitable for combat if an adversary can jam, spoof, intercept, or corrupt the network that connects the aircraft to its human supervisors.

What are the biggest obstacles to operational loyal wingmen?

  • Communications denial: jamming and cyberattack can separate the aircraft from its controller or distort its situational picture.
  • Autonomy assurance: operators must understand what the software will do when sensors disagree, targets behave unexpectedly, or the mission changes.
  • Pilot workload: managing multiple unmanned aircraft can overwhelm a pilot unless autonomy handles routine decisions effectively.
  • Weapons policy: countries must define the required level of human control over target identification and weapon release.
  • Logistics: unmanned aircraft still need fuel, spare parts, technicians, software support, weapons, and secure ground equipment.
  • Survivability versus affordability: stealth, electronic warfare, sensors, and hardened communications can make an allegedly low-cost aircraft expensive.
  • Payload-range trade-offs: adding weapons or sensors can reduce range, endurance, acceleration, or maneuverability.
  • Testing and certification: proving that autonomous software behaves safely across unusual conditions is more difficult than demonstrating a single successful flight.
  • Limited public evidence: classified specifications and state messaging make it difficult to verify claims about Chinese, Russian, and some Western systems.

What should readers look for in future announcements?

The most meaningful milestones are not necessarily dramatic flight videos. Look for evidence that a program has moved from airframe demonstration toward repeatable military operations:

  • reliable operation with a named crewed aircraft or battle-management platform;
  • autonomous navigation and formation behavior in realistic conditions;
  • sensor and electronic-warfare payload integration;
  • weapons testing that clearly identifies human authorization and the target type;
  • communications-loss and GPS-denial procedures;
  • deployment, refueling, maintenance, and recovery demonstrations;
  • procurement decisions, production aircraft, trained units, and declared operational capability.

The July 2026 Creech exercise is notable because it examined deployment, refueling, logistics, tactics, and operational procedures rather than only aircraft flight performance. Those support functions may determine whether a loyal-wingman fleet can generate useful sorties during a prolonged conflict.

Bottom line: are loyal wingmen ready for combat?

Loyal wingmen are moving from a concept into testable military systems, but the label still covers aircraft at very different stages of maturity. MQ-28A Ghost Bat and XQ-58A Valkyrie have the strongest public evidence of meaningful teaming and flight testing. YFQ-42A and YFQ-44A are the clearest U.S. procurement prototypes. Kızılelma, Anka-3, GJ-11, and S-70 are significant unmanned fighter candidates, while Taranis and nEUROn are important completed demonstrators.

No country has publicly demonstrated a large, fully operational fleet of autonomous fighter escorts performing every role implied by the popular “robot wingman” idea. The decisive advances will come from resilient networking, manageable human control, logistics, weapons policy, and affordable sustained operations—not from autonomy claims or aircraft renderings alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most mature loyal wingman drone?

Australia’s MQ-28A Ghost Bat is the most mature publicly demonstrated loyal-wingman program as of August 16, 2026. Boeing and the Royal Australian Air Force have reported integrated testing with an E-7A Wedgetail and F/A-18F Super Hornet, but the aircraft is not yet a mature mass-service fleet.

Are loyal wingman drones fully autonomous?

Loyal wingman drones can autonomously navigate, maintain formation, process sensor information, and execute authorized parts of a mission, but autonomous flight does not necessarily mean independent lethal decision-making. In a July 2026 YFQ-44A test, the U.S. Air Force said human control remained over the weapon-release decision.

Which loyal wingman drones are operational?

No system on this list should be described as a large, fully operational fleet of autonomous fighter escorts. MQ-28A is in advanced testing and operationalization, XQ-58A is flight-tested and under active development, and YFQ-42A and YFQ-44A remain prototypes undergoing testing and experimentation.

Can a loyal wingman protect a fighter jet?

A loyal wingman can help protect a fighter by scouting ahead, extending sensors, jamming threats, acting as a decoy, carrying weapons, relaying communications, or forcing an adversary to divide its attention. The exact protective role depends on the aircraft’s payload, software, communications, and rules of engagement.
