For VPS hosting in Germany, Hetzner is the strongest overall value for technically capable users, while netcup, IONOS, OVHcloud, Contabo, STRATO, Hostinger, Scaleway, DigitalOcean, and Vultr suit different needs. The right choice depends on German server location, recurring cost, CPU consistency, support, backups, traffic, and whether you need managed administration.
Important date note: This article is an April 2026 pricing and availability snapshot. VPS prices, locations, IPv4 charges, contract terms, and plan specifications can change. Confirm the exact offer at checkout before ordering.
A VPS, or virtual private server, gives you operating-system access and more control than shared hosting, but most inexpensive VPS plans are unmanaged. You usually remain responsible for Linux updates, SSH security, firewalls, application configuration, monitoring, backups, and recovery.
Key takeaways
- Hetzner is the best overall choice for developers and technically capable small businesses that want German locations, strong automation, and good price-to-resource value.
- netcup and Contabo are compelling when RAM and storage per euro matter more than premium support or perfectly predictable CPU performance.
- IONOS is the better mainstream business option, especially for buyers who may also need domains, email, Windows VPS products, backups, or other hosting services.
- OVHcloud deserves close attention for public-facing services because included anti-DDoS protection is a major product differentiator, although the exact scope must be checked.
- A German data center, a German provider, an EU location, and GDPR compliance are different claims; a German server does not automatically make a customer’s application GDPR-compliant.
Commercial note: Some links in this article lead to provider product pages. Prices and terms should be compared at checkout, including VAT, renewal pricing, IPv4, backups, snapshots, and contract length.

What is the best VPS hosting in Germany?
Hetzner is the best default recommendation for experienced Linux users and developers. Hetzner offers German cloud locations, including Falkenstein and Nuremberg, together with API and CLI access, private networks, firewalls, one-click applications, and integrations such as Terraform, Ansible, and Kubernetes. Those features make Hetzner a particularly strong fit for websites, APIs, Docker workloads, staging environments, VPNs, monitoring, and small databases. Hetzner’s official Cloud page describes these capabilities and its German locations.
Hetzner is not categorically the best provider for every buyer. IONOS is more suitable for some conventional businesses, OVHcloud is attractive for DDoS-sensitive services, Contabo can provide more RAM and storage for a low headline price, and Hostinger may be easier for beginners. The shortlist below is therefore organized by use case rather than by a simplistic price ranking.
Quick comparison: which German VPS provider fits your workload?
The table uses the April 2026 research snapshot where a figure or feature was available. “Verify” is deliberate: a provider may advertise German infrastructure while the exact VPS plan, backup service, or region selected at checkout differs.
| Provider | Best for | German location? | Starting price seen | vCPU | RAM | Storage | Included transfer | IPv4 | Backups | Billing/term | Managed support | Key drawback |

| DigitalOcean Droplets | Polished developer tooling | Frankfurt availability should be verified by Droplet family | Verify live price | Plan-dependent | Plan-dependent | Plan-dependent | Verify included transfer | Verify current charge | Extra or plan-dependent | Usage-based billing | Self-managed by default; managed services are separate | Usually weaker raw resource value than German specialists |
| Vultr Cloud Compute | Global deployment flexibility | Frankfurt availability should be verified by plan | Verify live price | Plan-dependent | Plan-dependent | Plan-dependent | Verify included bandwidth | Verify current charge | Verify backup and snapshot costs | Usage-based billing | Self-managed by default | Frankfurt location does not make Vultr a German provider |
According to February 2026 German comparison coverage, approximate entry signals were €4.51 for Hetzner, €5.99 for Contabo, €4.99 for netcup, €1 for IONOS promotional pricing, and €3.99 for OVHcloud. These figures are dated comparison signals, not current quotes. The same numbers may represent different billing terms, tax treatment, product generations, setup fees, or excluded extras.

The shortlist uses a workload-oriented framework rather than treating the lowest advertised price as the winner. Germany-location availability and price-to-resource value each receive 20% of the proposed evaluation; performance predictability and network protection each receive 15%; usability and automation, support and business suitability, and commercial transparency each receive 10%.
| Criterion | Weight | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Germany-location availability | 20% | Whether the specific VPS line offers Frankfurt, Berlin, Falkenstein, Nuremberg, Karlsruhe, or another German location |
| Price-to-resource value | 20% | Recurring price, vCPU, RAM, storage, traffic, IPv4, backups, and snapshots |
| Performance predictability | 15% | Shared versus dedicated vCPU, CPU generation, storage type, published limits, and oversubscription |
| Network and protection | 15% | Traffic, port speed, DDoS mitigation, IPv6, private networking, firewall, and load-balancer options |
| Usability and automation | 10% | Control panel, API, CLI, Terraform, Ansible, Kubernetes, images, rescue, and reinstall tools |
| Support and business suitability | 10% | Support channels, response expectations, language, SLA, and managed-service availability |
| Commercial transparency | 10% | Contract length, setup fees, renewal pricing, VAT, IPv4, backups, cancellation, and refunds |
Uptime should not be scored as an editorial measurement unless every provider has comparable independent monitoring using the same methodology. A provider-published SLA is not the same as independently measured application availability. Hetzner advertises a 99.9% uptime SLA for professional requirements on its Cloud page; that figure should be treated as a vendor-published SLA, not as a cross-provider benchmark.
Which German VPS provider is best for each use case?
Best overall: Hetzner Cloud
Hetzner is the strongest default for a technically capable buyer who wants a German location and an efficient developer workflow. The cloud console, API, CLI, private networks, firewalls, one-click applications, and integrations with Terraform, Ansible, and Kubernetes make Hetzner well suited to repeatable deployments.
The trade-off is administration responsibility. Hetzner’s low-cost cloud model is primarily unmanaged, so the customer must handle patching, SSH hardening, monitoring, backup design, and recovery. Shared-vCPU plans also should not be treated as dedicated compute. Hetzner pricing changed for new and existing products on April 1, 2026, according to May 2026 comparison coverage; buyers should use the post-adjustment tariff rather than older screenshots or articles.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose Hetzner when: you can administer Linux and want strong infrastructure value in Falkenstein or Nuremberg.
Best alternative value: netcup
netcup is a strong choice for experienced users who want substantial RAM, storage, and traffic allocation for the money from a German provider. A 2026 German price table lists a VPS 500 G12 example with 2 vCores, 4 GB DDR5 ECC RAM, and 128 GB NVMe storage, but the exact product, availability, and price should be captured from the live netcup VPS configurator.
netcup’s promotions and minimum terms require careful normalization. Confirm whether the selected product is actually a VPS rather than a root server or another product class, then check the city, IPv4 policy, backup options, renewal rate, and cancellation conditions.
Choose netcup when: you are comfortable with self-management and want high specifications per euro from a German vendor.
Best mainstream business option: IONOS VPS
IONOS is a sensible choice for small businesses and agencies that value an established hosting ecosystem alongside the VPS. IONOS offers fully virtualized VPS products with SSD storage and lists both Linux and Windows VPS options on its official product page.
IONOS is particularly relevant when the same supplier may also provide domains, email, web hosting, backups, dedicated servers, or Windows infrastructure. Contract models differ across VPS and cloud products; April 2026 German cloud-price research notes that some IONOS products use different monthly-cancellable or longer-term arrangements. Promotional entry pricing must therefore be separated from the normal recurring rate.
Choose IONOS when: you want a conventional business supplier, Windows availability, or a broader hosting portfolio.
Best for DDoS-sensitive public services: OVHcloud
OVHcloud is a strong candidate for websites, APIs, game servers, and other Internet-facing applications where network protection matters. OVHcloud emphasizes its network and protection features, and 2026 comparison coverage identifies included anti-DDoS protection as a significant VPS feature.

- All-In-One Setup Kit Included – Comes with 34 rack screws (5mm & 6mm), a 1U blank spacer, and an assembly tool—ready for fast installation out of the box.
Do not interpret “DDoS protection included” as unlimited protection against every attack. Verify the current mitigation scope, exclusions, traffic allowance, port speed, backup pricing, and German-region availability for the exact VPS tier. Support experience can also vary by service level.
Choose OVHcloud when: public exposure and network protection matter more than choosing a German contracting company.
Best raw capacity per euro: Contabo
Contabo is attractive when a workload needs a large amount of RAM or storage at a low headline price. A February 2026 Germany VPS comparison lists Contabo with an entry plan offering substantially more RAM and storage than several competing entry-level plans.
Capacity is not the same as predictable performance. Before deploying a latency-sensitive database or sustained CPU workload, investigate CPU allocation, storage performance, network policy, backup pricing, setup fees, payment-term differences, and abuse procedures. “Unlimited traffic” may still be constrained by port speed, fair-use rules, congestion, CPU, disk, and acceptable-use policies.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose Contabo when: RAM and storage are the priority and you can test or tolerate less predictable performance and support.
Best traditional German hosting alternative: STRATO VPS
STRATO is a credible conventional German hosting option for small websites, business applications, and buyers who prefer a familiar local-market provider. STRATO may be especially convenient for existing domain or web-hosting customers.
Compared with cloud-native providers, STRATO may offer less API-first automation. Verify the exact server location, SSD or NVMe type, backup options, Windows availability, control-panel features, contract duration, and renewal price. German comparison coverage includes STRATO among the relevant VPS options but does not replace a live product check.
Choose STRATO when: traditional hosting, German-market support expectations, and a familiar control panel matter more than DevOps automation.
Best beginner-friendly international option: Hostinger VPS
Hostinger is aimed at users who want a relatively accessible VPS onboarding experience. Hostinger describes its VPS products as KVM-based virtual private servers, and the service can suit small websites, bots, development projects, and personal applications.
Hostinger should not be treated as a German VPS until the ordering flow confirms Germany as the physical location for the selected plan. A European region is not necessarily Germany, and serving German customers does not make Hostinger a German provider. Renewal pricing, required prepayment, backups, IPv4, bandwidth, and support terms also need separate review.
Choose Hostinger when: ease of onboarding matters and strict German physical residency is not assumed without verification.
Best European cloud platform: Scaleway Instances
Scaleway is a developer-oriented European cloud alternative for teams that may need object storage, managed databases, containers, load balancing, Kubernetes, or other services beyond a single virtual machine. Scaleway publishes a dedicated virtual-instances product family, while a European public-cloud capability comparison includes services such as VPC, object storage, load balancing, Kubernetes, managed databases, and backups.

Choose Scaleway when: you want a broader European cloud platform rather than only an inexpensive root-access server.
Check Scaleway Virtual Instances
Best polished developer experience: DigitalOcean
DigitalOcean Droplets are a strong fit for developers who prioritize a simple deployment workflow, mature documentation, API and CLI tooling, infrastructure automation, and a managed-service ecosystem. Frankfurt availability is relevant to German latency, but availability must be checked by Droplet family.
DigitalOcean is usually less compelling than German specialists when the main criterion is RAM or storage per euro. Egress, public IPv4, backups, snapshots, and managed services can change the total cost. DigitalOcean is also a US company, so a Frankfurt region should not be presented as equivalent to German-company jurisdiction.

Choose DigitalOcean when: polished tooling and documentation are worth paying more for than maximum raw capacity.
Best for global expansion: Vultr Cloud Compute
Vultr is useful for developers who need a broad international location menu and may deploy outside Germany later. Frankfurt is relevant for Germany-focused deployments, while the cloud-instance model and developer tooling can support prototypes and multi-region applications.
Vultr is not a German provider merely because it offers a Frankfurt region. Verify the exact Frankfurt plan, bandwidth, IPv4, backups, snapshots, DDoS terms, support model, and account-verification requirements before using Vultr for a business-critical workload.
Choose Vultr when: global location flexibility matters more than German ownership, German support, or the lowest local price.

What does “VPS in Germany” actually mean?
“VPS in Germany” can describe a physical German data center, a German provider, or simply a vendor serving German customers. These categories must be kept separate when data residency, jurisdiction, latency, or procurement requirements matter.
| Label | Meaning | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| German data center | The VPS can be provisioned in a physical German location | That the provider is German, that backups are also in Germany, or that the workload is GDPR-compliant |
| German provider | The contracting company is headquartered or incorporated in Germany | That every product, control-plane system, subprocessor, or backup is located in Germany |
| EU provider or data center | The company or server is elsewhere in the European Union | That a Germany-specific residency requirement is satisfied |
| GDPR-compliant service | The vendor claims compliance or offers contractual and technical arrangements that support GDPR obligations | That the customer’s application is automatically compliant |
Germany-based infrastructure can reduce latency for German users, but Frankfurt, Berlin, Falkenstein, Nuremberg, and Karlsruhe are not interchangeable labels. The best location depends on the users’ networks, the provider’s routing, the application’s dependencies, and where backups and related services run.
Hetzner explicitly markets German hosting as GDPR-compliant and lists Falkenstein and Nuremberg. That statement describes Hetzner’s offering; it does not certify every customer workload. Customer compliance still depends on the processing activity, data-processing agreement, access controls, encryption, backups, subprocessors, logging, retention, and incident procedures.
Should you choose a managed or unmanaged VPS?
An unmanaged VPS is cheaper and more flexible, but the customer operates the server; a managed VPS costs more and may include help with updates, monitoring, security, or administration. “24/7 support” does not necessarily mean that a provider will administer Linux or fix an application.

| Application troubleshooting | Usually customer responsibility | Only included if the contract explicitly covers the application |
| Control | High | Potentially more restricted or standardized |
| Best for | Developers, self-hosters, and Linux administrators | Businesses that value operational assistance |
Choose an unmanaged plan if you can maintain Linux, secure SSH, configure a firewall, renew TLS certificates, monitor resources, manage logs, back up data, and restore a service under pressure. Choose managed hosting or conventional shared hosting if server administration is outside your skills or business responsibilities.
How much RAM, CPU, and storage does a VPS need?
VPS sizing is a starting heuristic, not a guarantee. Actual requirements depend on traffic, software, caching, database size, concurrency, background jobs, and whether containers share the machine.
| Workload | Practical starting point | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Static site or reverse proxy | 1–2 vCPU and 1–2 GB RAM | Logs, TLS, monitoring, and traffic can increase memory and storage needs |
| WordPress or small web application | 2 vCPU and 2–4 GB RAM | Plugins, PHP workers, database size, and traffic determine the real requirement |
| Docker with several services | 2–4 vCPU and 4–8 GB RAM | Container limits and image storage must be planned separately |
| Small database or Nextcloud-style workload | At least 4 GB RAM, fast NVMe, and tested backups | IOPS, database workload, and restore time matter more than advertised capacity alone |
| Game server or CPU-heavy application | Dedicated vCPU or a benchmarked plan | “4 vCPU” is not comparable across shared, burstable, and dedicated offerings |
| Production business application | Size from measured usage and add redundancy | One VPS is a single failure domain regardless of its specifications |
A 512 MB or 1 GB plan can become unusable when a control panel, database, application, monitoring agent, operating system, and logs compete for memory. The cheapest plan may also require a long prepayment term, exclude IPv4, charge separately for backups, or use an introductory price that expires.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you compare besides the monthly VPS price?
IPv4 and IPv6
Check whether one public IPv4 address is included, charged separately, or unavailable for the exact plan. Confirm IPv6 support, reverse-DNS configuration, SMTP restrictions, and whether the public address remains attached after reinstallation or migration.
Backups, snapshots, and disaster recovery
A snapshot is not automatically a disaster-recovery system. A robust design distinguishes provider snapshots, provider backups, external backups, database-consistent backups, cross-region copies, and tested restores.
A backup stored in the same account or failure domain may be lost through account compromise, accidental deletion, corruption, ransomware, or a provider-wide incident. Test restoration before production launch and document how to rebuild the application on a replacement instance.
Traffic and egress
Compare included monthly transfer, port speed, fair-use restrictions, overage pricing, traffic direction, private-network billing, and charges for backup or object-storage transfers. “Unlimited” or “unmetered” traffic does not mean unlimited performance: port speed, congestion, CPU, disk, abuse controls, and network policy still apply.
CPU and storage predictability
Two plans with “4 vCPU” may behave very differently because one may use shared CPU and another dedicated CPU. CPU generation, frequency limits, bursting, oversubscription, storage IOPS, and network contention can all affect real performance. Do not compare a dedicated-vCPU plan with a shared-vCPU plan as though the labels were identical.

Contracts, tax, and renewal price
Normalize VAT, introductory pricing, renewal pricing, setup fees, prepayment duration, IPv4, backups, snapshots, extra storage, traffic overage, and Windows licensing. A monthly pay-as-you-go plan is not directly comparable with a 12-, 24-, or 36-month prepaid offer.
What are the main VPS failure modes?
The German location is unavailable
A vendor may advertise German infrastructure while the cheapest product is offered only elsewhere, Frankfurt capacity is sold out, the panel defaults to another region, or backups and snapshots are stored outside Germany. Select the exact city and product before payment, then document the location shown in the order confirmation.
Account verification takes longer than expected
New accounts may require identity or payment verification, manual review, country or payment-method checks, or additional review for mail servers, crawlers, proxies, VPNs, and high-volume applications. Read the acceptable-use and abuse policies before moving a business-critical workload.
“Unlimited traffic” performs poorly
Unlimited or unmetered traffic can still be limited by port speed, fair-use rules, congestion, CPU and disk capacity, abuse controls, or provider-specific network policies. Ask what happens at sustained high throughput rather than comparing the word “unlimited.”

Linux pricing must not represent Windows hosting. Verify the Windows Server edition, license inclusion, RDP access, CAL requirements, backup compatibility, and whether Windows is available in the required German region.
One VPS becomes a single point of failure
A provider uptime SLA is not the same as application availability. A production system may need multiple instances, health checks, load balancing, external backups, monitoring, and a tested recovery plan. A cheap VPS is not a substitute for redundancy.
How do you secure a new Linux VPS?
- Disable password SSH login only after key-based access has been verified.
- Use a non-root administrative account with sudo.
- Apply operating-system security updates.
- Configure a host firewall and restrict administrative ports by source IP where practical.
- Enable automatic TLS renewal.
- Monitor disk, memory, CPU, failed logins, and service health.
- Back up databases separately from the VPS.
- Test restoration before production launch.
- Record provider abuse and emergency-support contacts.
These are general operational controls rather than provider-specific commands. The exact procedure depends on the operating system, application stack, and provider image.
What should you verify before ordering?
- Confirm the exact German city and whether the city applies to the selected VPS product.
- Choose Linux or Windows and calculate any licensing cost.
- Identify shared, burstable, or dedicated vCPU allocation.
- Record the normal renewal price separately from any introductory price.
- Check VAT, minimum term, setup fee, cancellation, and refund rules.
- Price public IPv4, backups, snapshots, extra storage, and traffic overage.
- Confirm traffic allowance, port speed, fair-use rules, and private-network billing.
- Read DDoS protection scope, SMTP restrictions, acceptable-use rules, and suspension procedures.
- Check support response expectations and whether hands-on administration is included.
- Request or review the data-processing agreement and identify control-plane, backup, and subprocessor locations.
- Plan external backups, monitoring, and restoration before placing production data on the VPS.
Final recommendations
Choose Hetzner for the best general balance of German location, developer tooling, and price-to-resource value. Choose netcup for a strong German value alternative, Contabo for unusually generous RAM and storage, IONOS for mainstream business support and Windows-related needs, and OVHcloud when included network protection is a priority.

The most reliable purchase decision is not the cheapest headline plan. It is the plan whose physical location, recurring cost, CPU model, traffic terms, backup design, support scope, and compliance documentation match the workload.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a VPS in Germany automatically GDPR-compliant?
No. A VPS physically located in Germany does not automatically make an application GDPR-compliant. Compliance also depends on the customer’s processing activities, data-processing agreement, access controls, encryption, backups, subprocessors, logging, retention, and incident procedures.
Which VPS provider in Germany is best for beginners?
Hostinger may provide a more accessible onboarding experience, while IONOS is a stronger mainstream business option. Neither should be assumed to provide fully managed Linux administration unless the selected service explicitly includes it.
Is Hetzner cheaper than Contabo and netcup?
April 2026 comparison coverage reported approximate entry signals of €4.51 for Hetzner, €5.99 for Contabo, and €4.99 for netcup, but those figures are not normalized current quotes. VAT, renewal pricing, billing terms, IPv4, backups, storage, and Hetzner’s April 1, 2026 price adjustment can change the comparison.
Does a Frankfurt VPS guarantee the best latency for German users?
No. Frankfurt is a German data-center location, but latency depends on the user’s ISP, routing, application dependencies, and network congestion. Test the actual route from the locations that matter to your users.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Hetzner is the best starting point for most experienced developers seeking a VPS in Germany. netcup and Contabo can offer more capacity per euro, IONOS and STRATO suit conventional businesses, and OVHcloud is compelling for DDoS-sensitive public services. Verify the exact German location, renewal price, IPv4, backups, traffic terms, support scope, and data-processing documentation before ordering.
