For most Discord users, Discord Soundboard is the best soundboard because it is built in and needs no extra audio routing. If you need voice changing, a larger library, cross-application microphone playback, tabletop ambience, OBS integration, or hardware buttons, the best choice changes: Voicemod is the most versatile hybrid, Soundpad is the strongest paid Windows option, Resanance is the best free customization pick, and Kenku FM is purpose-built for tabletop audio.
Discord Soundboard is the best choice for most casual users because it is built into Discord and requires no extra routing. Choose a third-party app when you need a much larger sound library, voice changing, hotkeys that work outside Discord, microphone playback for games, tabletop audio mixing, OBS integration, or dedicated hardware controls.
For a quick decision: use Discord Soundboard for the simplest setup, Voicemod for voice effects and community sounds, Soundpad for polished Windows microphone playback, Resanance for free customization, and Kenku FM for tabletop campaigns. Streamers may prefer OBS Soundboard, while minimalist and open-source-oriented users should look at JNSoundboard or micahmo SoundBoard.
Important: This is a use-case ranking, not a controlled latency or reliability test. Features, operating-system support, pricing, sound-library limits, releases, and Discord permissions can change, so verify the current details before installing or purchasing.

1. Discord Soundboard — best built-in option
Discord Soundboard is the right starting point if you only need to trigger short clips for people in a Discord voice channel. It is native to Discord, so you do not need a separate soundboard program, virtual microphone, virtual audio cable, or complicated mixer setup.
When you are in a voice channel, open the Soundboard control and choose one of the sounds available to that server. Discord plays the clip as a voice-channel effect so other participants can hear it. The experience is simpler than routing an external application into a microphone input.
What it does well
- Requires no additional soundboard installation.
- Plays brief clips directly to people in the current voice channel.
- Supports server-managed sounds and permissions.
- Allows sound uploads from Discord on desktop or in a browser, subject to the server’s controls.
- Supports playback on mobile, although management and upload controls may differ from desktop and browser.
- Nitro subscribers can use the feature across servers where the relevant permissions and server rules allow it.
Limitations
Discord Soundboard is tied to Discord’s server and permission model. A server may control who can use the feature, who can manage sounds, and how many sounds are available. It is therefore not a universal soundboard for in-game voice chat, Zoom, other chat applications, or a microphone feed used by multiple programs.
Use it when your audience is already in Discord and you want the lowest-friction solution. Choose an external app if you need sound playback to appear as a selectable microphone in Discord and other applications.

2. Voicemod — best for a large library plus voice changing
Voicemod is the strongest all-around third-party choice for users who want sound effects and real-time voice changing in the same application. Its feature set combines a soundboard, custom sound uploads, keyboard hotkeys, voice effects, shared soundboards, and a community-oriented sound library.
It is designed for Discord, games, streams, and other applications that accept microphone input. That makes it more flexible than Discord’s native tool, provided you are comfortable selecting and testing the correct virtual microphone or output device.
Why choose it
- Switch between voice effects and sound clips without running separate tools.
- Assign sounds and effects to keyboard hotkeys.
- Use custom clips alongside sounds from its community library.
- Fit sound effects into gaming and streaming workflows, not just Discord.
- Use shared soundboard features when collaborating with other creators or friends.
Voicemod’s library size, free-versus-paid limits, and plan-specific features are volatile product details. Do not choose it solely because of a particular advertised sound count or assume that every sound, effect, or integration is available on every plan.
Voicemod is also a good candidate for a physical controller. If you trigger effects frequently while streaming, a Stream Deck soundboard controller can provide dedicated buttons instead of forcing you to remember keyboard shortcuts. This is optional hardware, not a requirement for Voicemod or Discord Soundboard.

Soundpad is a polished Windows-focused choice for playing clips through a microphone in Discord and other voice-chat applications. It is especially appealing to users who want a dedicated soundboard rather than a full voice-changing suite.
Its documented features include hotkey assignment, recording, editing, clip organization, and playback through the selected microphone path. A Steam purchase option is available, but confirm the current price, licensing terms, and supported Windows versions before buying.
Best fit
- Windows users who want reliable, organized microphone playback.
- Gamers who use Discord and other voice-chat software.
- Users who want to record or edit clips inside the same tool.
- People who prefer a focused paid product over a large social sound library or voice changer.
Soundpad should be treated as a Windows recommendation. Do not assume that its desktop workflow translates to macOS or Linux without separate current verification. It also uses microphone-style routing, so Discord must be configured to receive the device or virtual input that Soundpad exposes.

4. Resanance — best free Windows soundboard for customization
Resanance is one of the best free choices for users who care more about routing and customization than a polished commercial ecosystem. It documents unlimited sounds and hotkeys, per-sound volume controls, multiple simultaneous output devices, MIDI support, and text-to-speech.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It can work with applications that accept audio input, including Discord, but its flexibility also means more configuration. You may need to choose an output device, a virtual microphone, or a virtual audio cable and then select the matching input in Discord.
Why advanced users may prefer it
- Assign many sounds to hotkeys without being limited to a small button grid.
- Adjust individual clip volume instead of changing the whole application’s level.
- Send audio to more than one output device.
- Trigger sounds from MIDI hardware.
- Use text-to-speech as well as prerecorded audio.
Resanance is a strong fit for a free, highly configurable Windows setup. It is less suitable if you want to install an app, select one obvious microphone, and never think about routing again.
5. EXP Soundboard — best lightweight free playback tool
EXP Soundboard is a good lightweight option for straightforward clip playback. Its documented feature set includes MP3 and WAV playback, hotkeys, text-to-speech, adjustable output, and virtual-audio-cable routing.
It is attractive when you want a small tool that focuses on triggering audio rather than building a large community library, adding elaborate voice effects, or managing an entire stream. It can feed audio into Discord when the virtual audio path is configured correctly.
Download-source and release information for projects in this category can vary. Use the currently verified project source, scan downloads appropriately, and do not rely on an old third-party mirror or an unverified release number. The exact version should be rechecked at publication time.
6. Kenku FM — best for tabletop campaigns and background audio
Kenku FM is the best specialized choice for Dungeon Masters and online role-playing groups. It is built to share local music, sound effects, and website audio to Discord calls, making it more suitable for campaign ambience than a conventional meme soundboard.
A tabletop host can prepare music, environmental effects, and browser-based audio in one workspace and send it to the Discord call. That is a different job from pressing a single reaction clip, and it is why Kenku FM deserves a place on this list even though it is not the most general-purpose soundboard.
Notable features
- Playback for local music and sound effects.
- Support for website audio.
- Virtual-input support for sending audio into Discord.
- A Stream Deck plugin for physical control during a session.
Kenku FM is best when one person is acting as the session’s audio operator. For a few quick clips, Discord Soundboard or a simpler hotkey tool will usually involve less preparation.

- Custom three-capsule array: This professional USB mic produces clear, powerful, broadcast-quality sound for YouTube videos, Twitch game streaming, podcasting, Zoom meetings, music recording and more
- Blue VO!CE software: Elevate your streamings and recordings with clear broadcast vocal sound and entertain your audience with enhanced effects, advanced modulation and HD audio samples
- Four pickup patterns: Flexible cardioid, omni, bidirectional, and stereo pickup patterns allow you to record in ways that would normally require multiple mics, for vocals, instruments and podcasts
- Onboard audio controls: Headphone volume, pattern selection, instant mute, and mic gain put you in charge of every level of the audio recording and streaming process
- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
The workflow is similar to other virtual-microphone tools: select the desired output in VoicePea, then choose the corresponding input in Discord under User Settings > Voice & Video > Input Device. Always run Discord’s microphone test before joining a busy call.
HitPaw’s product pages include vendor feature and testimonial claims. Treat those as descriptions of the product’s intended capabilities, not as independent evidence that it has the best voice quality, lowest latency, or highest reliability. There is no controlled comparative test behind this ranking.
8. JNSoundboard — best minimalist open-source hotkey option
JNSoundboard is for users who want a simple, community-developed hotkey soundboard rather than a large commercial platform. Its official GitLab project describes it as an open-source hotkey soundboard program.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The appeal is a minimal workflow: assign clips to shortcuts and trigger them when needed. That can be preferable to installing an application packed with voice effects, subscriptions, social libraries, or streaming features.
Its trade-off is limited current documentation compared with larger products. Check the project’s present release activity, operating-system compatibility, installation instructions, and audio-routing behavior before making it your main tool. It should not be ranked above more established options based only on the open-source label.
9. OBS Soundboard — best for OBS-centered creators
OBS Soundboard is the natural choice for streamers who want sound playback close to their OBS controls. It is an OBS plugin that adds a soundboard dock, keeping clips near the rest of a broadcast-control workflow.
The project repository records version 2.0.0 as released on June 12, 2025. Because plugin compatibility can depend on the current OBS version and operating system, verify the project’s latest release and installation notes before deploying it for a live stream.

OBS Soundboard is not automatically a complete Discord voice-routing solution. A sound playing inside OBS may be audible in a stream mix without being sent to your Discord microphone, or vice versa. If you need viewers and Discord participants to hear the same effect, map the audio deliberately and test each destination separately.
10. micahmo SoundBoard — best customizable Windows layout
micahmo SoundBoard is a strong choice for Windows users who want to design their own soundboard panel. Its open repository describes multiple tabs, configurable grids, color customization, looping, volume adjustment, hotkeys, search, and selection of one or more output devices.
This layout flexibility is useful for organizing large collections: one tab for short reactions, another for ambience, and another for recurring stream or game cues. Search and per-sound controls are more useful than a simple list once the library grows.

- [Convenient Setup] Plug and play recording USB microphone for PC, with 5.9-Foot USB cable included for computer PC laptop, is connected directly to USB-A port for recording music, computer singing or podcast. The office condenser microphone for computer is easy to use and install. (NOT compatible with Xbox and Phones)
- [Durable Metal Design] Solid sturdy metal construction design, the computer microphone for Zoom meetings with stable tripod stand is convenient when you are doing voice overs or livestreams on YouTube. Durable material extends the service life of the voice-over microphone.
- [Mic Volume Knob] Gaming condenser USB mic compatible for PS4 with additional volume knob itself has a louder or quieter adjustment and is more sensitive. Your voice would be heard well enough through the zoom microphone USB when gaming, skyping or voice recording. Also, you can adjust your volume to zero and protect your privacy.
- [Widely Use] USB-powered design, the condenser microphone for recording no need the 48v Phantom power supply, works well with Cortana, Discord, voice chat and voice recognition. The podcast microphone for Mac, with USB-B to USB-A/C cable, is compatible with desktop, laptop or PS4/PS5, which meets most of your daily recording needs.
- [Clear Output Voice] Cardioid condenser microphone for PC captures your voice properly, producing clear smooth and crisp sound. Great computer recording mic for gamers/streamers/youtubers focus on the main source and reduces background noise. The streaming microphone does the job well for broadcast ,OBS and teamspeak.
The trade-off is the same one found with many open repositories: current maintenance, packaging, compatibility, and installation quality need to be evaluated before use. It is best for technically comfortable users who value control and do not mind checking the project’s current status.
How to choose the right Discord soundboard
Choose Discord Soundboard if you want the easiest setup
Use the native feature when the audience is already in the same Discord voice channel and you only need short effects. There is no virtual microphone to troubleshoot, and server administrators can manage the available sounds and permissions. The limitation is that the feature does not become a general-purpose audio input for other applications.
Choose Voicemod or HitPaw VoicePea for voice effects
These are hybrid tools: they combine sound effects with real-time voice changing. Voicemod has the stronger fit for users who also want a community sound library, shared soundboards, and streaming integrations. HitPaw VoicePea is worth considering when its voice-effect workflow and one-click meme soundboard better match your preferences.
Choose Soundpad for focused Windows microphone playback
Soundpad is the most direct recommendation when your priority is a polished, paid Windows tool for playing clips into Discord and other voice chats. It is less appropriate if you need a mobile solution, a tabletop music workspace, or a full voice-changing suite.
Choose Resanance or EXP Soundboard for free external routing
Resanance offers more customization, multiple outputs, MIDI, per-sound volume, and TTS. EXP Soundboard is the more lightweight choice for MP3/WAV playback, hotkeys, and basic routing. Both can require more configuration than Discord’s native feature.

Kenku FM is designed around sharing music, effects, and web audio to a Discord call. It is a better match for campaign ambience and session control than a general-purpose meme board.
Choose OBS Soundboard for a stream-first workflow
If OBS is the center of your production setup, a dock inside OBS can be more convenient than switching to a separate application. Plan the audio destinations carefully if the same clips must reach both your stream and Discord.
Choose JNSoundboard or micahmo SoundBoard for an open, customizable workflow
JNSoundboard favors a minimal hotkey approach. micahmo SoundBoard favors a configurable desktop interface with tabs, grids, search, looping, colors, and multiple output devices. Both require more attention to current project health than a commercial application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to set up an external soundboard in Discord
The exact names of virtual devices vary by application and operating system, but the basic chain is the same:
- Install the soundboard from its verified project or vendor source. Avoid relying on old download mirrors, particularly for lightweight or community-developed projects.
- Choose the soundboard’s output path. Depending on the application, this may be a virtual microphone, a virtual audio cable, or a selected physical output device.
- Open Discord’s input settings. Go to User Settings > Voice & Video > Input Device and select the virtual or physical input that receives the soundboard audio.
- Test the microphone. Trigger a clip while watching Discord’s input indicator or using its microphone test. If the indicator does not respond, Discord is listening to the wrong device.
- Check the soundboard’s own volume. A clip can be routed correctly but still be inaudible because its per-sound volume, application volume, or system-device level is too low.
- Use headphones during testing. This reduces the chance of creating feedback when speakers are picked up by the microphone path.
- Test with a friend before using it in a live call or stream. You need to confirm not only that you can hear the clip, but that other participants receive it at a reasonable volume.
A common virtual-cable arrangement is: soundboard output to the cable’s input, then Discord’s microphone input set to the cable’s output. Device names differ, so follow the selected application’s routing diagram rather than choosing devices based only on similar names.

Why people cannot hear your soundboard
- Discord is using the wrong input. Recheck User Settings > Voice & Video > Input Device. This is the most common issue with external soundboards.
- The soundboard is playing to speakers instead of the virtual input. Confirm the app’s output destination and watch its level meter if it provides one.
- The clip is too quiet. Check the clip’s individual volume, the soundboard’s master volume, Windows or system volume, and Discord’s input level.
- Discord voice processing is filtering the clip. Noise suppression and related processing can muffle or block sound effects. Temporarily test with noise suppression reduced or disabled, then adjust the rest of the voice-processing settings one at a time. This is a troubleshooting test, not a universal requirement to disable Discord processing.
- A virtual audio device is missing or occupied. Restart the soundboard and Discord, confirm that the virtual device appears in system sound settings, and make sure another application has not taken exclusive control of it.
- OBS and Discord are receiving different mixes. A clip audible in an OBS stream is not necessarily being sent to Discord. Check each application’s input and output path independently.
- Permissions are blocking the native feature. For Discord Soundboard, ask the server administrator to check the server’s soundboard settings and the relevant role permissions.
If the issue is limited to one external application, first test the soundboard in Discord’s microphone test. If that works, the problem is probably the other application’s selected input or its own voice-processing settings rather than the soundboard itself.
Do you need a Stream Deck for Discord sound effects?
No. Keyboard hotkeys and Discord’s native controls are enough for most users. A Stream Deck becomes useful when you trigger many effects, need large labeled buttons, or want to operate audio without looking at the keyboard during a stream or tabletop session.
Voicemod supports Stream Deck integration, and Kenku FM documents a Stream Deck plugin. Elgato also documents using Stream Deck to trigger soundboard audio. Treat the hardware as an optional control surface: it does not replace the soundboard application, Discord permissions, or correct audio routing.
Practical considerations before installing one
Sound quality and volume balance
Normalize clips before adding them to a board when possible, and avoid setting reaction sounds dramatically louder than speech. Per-sound volume controls, available in tools such as Resanance and micahmo SoundBoard, make balancing easier.
Hotkey conflicts
Choose shortcuts that do not collide with game controls, push-to-talk, OBS commands, or accessibility shortcuts. If a sound triggers while you are typing or gaming, move it to a dedicated key combination or hardware button.
Permissions and consent
On Discord, the server controls whether members can use or manage native sounds. In a community or stream, use clips that you are permitted to distribute and avoid repeated effects that make conversation difficult to follow.
Operating-system support
Soundpad, Resanance, EXP Soundboard, and micahmo SoundBoard are best approached as Windows-focused recommendations. JNSoundboard, OBS Soundboard, Kenku FM, Voicemod, and HitPaw VoicePea should be checked against their current official support information before installation on a specific operating system. Do not assume that a Windows virtual-audio workflow will behave identically on macOS or Linux.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a third-party soundboard for Discord?
No. Discord Soundboard is built into Discord and is enough for short clips played to people in the same voice channel. You need a third-party app only when you want features such as voice changing, larger libraries, hotkeys that work in other applications, tabletop audio playback, OBS integration, or more advanced routing.
Why can I hear my soundboard but my Discord friends cannot?
For Discord’s native Soundboard, check the server’s soundboard settings and your role permissions. For an external app, go to User Settings > Voice & Video > Input Device and select the virtual microphone or audio device receiving the soundboard output. Then use Discord’s microphone test and check the soundboard’s own volume.
Is Discord Soundboard better than an external soundboard app?
Use Discord Soundboard when you only need clips inside Discord. Use an external app such as Soundpad, Resanance, EXP Soundboard, or Voicemod when the audio must appear as a microphone input that can be used by Discord, games, streams, or other voice applications.
Do I need a Stream Deck to use a Discord soundboard?
No. A Stream Deck is optional hardware for dedicated, labeled buttons. Keyboard hotkeys and Discord’s own Soundboard controls work without it. Stream Deck hardware is most useful for frequent sound effects, live streaming, or tabletop sessions.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Start with Discord Soundboard unless you need capabilities Discord does not provide. Voicemod is the most versatile third-party pick, Soundpad is the focused paid Windows option, Resanance is the strongest free customization choice, and Kenku FM is the clear specialist for tabletop audio. External apps can work across more voice applications, but they require correct microphone or virtual-cable routing and may be affected by Discord’s noise suppression.
