For ordinary public downloads, MediaFire Pro is the simplest choice; Pixeldrain is the clearest option for paid website hotlinking; Backblaze B2 plus Cloudflare is better for custom domains and scalable assets; Cloudinary is best for image and video delivery. Dropbox, Proton Drive, Sync.com, Google Drive, and OneDrive mainly provide share pages rather than unrestricted raw hotlink URLs.

“Direct link” and “hotlink” are often used as though they mean the same thing, but they do not. A direct-download link may start a download after a redirect, while a true hotlink returns the file itself to an external website, application, or media element. The distinction affects compatibility, bandwidth, privacy, and cost.

Key takeaways

  • MediaFire Pro advertises direct file links, 1 TB of storage, and a 50 GB maximum file size, but the feature is shown on a paid plan.
  • Pixeldrain explicitly supports iframe, image, and video embedding on paid plans; free users cannot hotlink, and the standard Pro plan lists 4 TB of transfer per 30 days.
  • Backblaze B2 is the strongest developer option because public object URLs can be placed behind Cloudflare and a custom domain, but setup and usage-based billing are required.
  • Cloudinary is designed for image and video delivery with transformations and CDN features, while pCloud offers a consumer-friendly Public Folder whose traffic is metered separately from storage.
  • Dropbox, Proton Drive, Sync.com, Google Drive, and OneDrive are useful sharing services, but their ordinary links usually open provider pages rather than functioning as neutral CDN-style hotlinks.

What does “direct link” or “hotlink” mean?

A share link opens a provider-hosted page, a direct-download link starts a download, a raw file URL returns the file itself, and a hotlink allows another website or application to request or embed that file.

Term What the URL does Typical use
Share link Opens a preview or download page Sending a document to another person
Direct-download link Starts a download, sometimes after redirects ZIP files, installers, software archives
Raw file URL Returns the asset itself Scripts, APIs, media players, HTML elements
Hotlink Allows external embedding or requests <img>, <video>, <audio>, CSS, or application code
Signed URL Provides temporary access containing authorization Controlled or expiring downloads
CDN asset URL Delivers an asset through an edge network Production websites and high-traffic applications

A URL that downloads correctly in a browser is not automatically suitable for hotlinking. An external embed can fail when the server returns an HTML preview page, requires cookies, sends the wrong MIME type, blocks the referring domain, or does not support the required media behavior.

Which file hosting providers offer real hotlinking?

Pixeldrain is the clearest explicit hotlinking choice in this list. MediaFire Pro and pCloud Public Folder are strong direct-link options, while Backblaze B2 and Cloudinary are more appropriate when the reader controls a website or application. The remaining services are primarily public-sharing or collaboration platforms.

Provider Best for Hotlink status Free-plan position Main limitation
MediaFire Simple public downloads Direct file links advertised on Pro Verify current tier and traffic rules Paid direct-link feature and plan conditions
Pixeldrain Explicit website embedding Paid iframe, image, and video embedding Free users cannot hotlink Transfer limits and domain controls
Backblaze B2 Developer asset libraries Public object URLs; CDN and custom domain possible Usage-based service rather than a simple free host Technical setup and usage billing
Cloudinary Images and video Media delivery with CDN and transformations Displayed trial includes 25 GB storage Credit-based model can be excessive for documents
pCloud Consumer storage with public links Public Folder creates direct file URLs Check current plan allowance Public-link traffic is separate from storage
FileLu Alternative direct-file hosting Product page advertises direct links Not established by the supplied evidence Bandwidth, retention, and policy details need validation
Dropbox Familiar sharing and downloads dl=1 forces download; raw=1 can bypass preview Depends on account and sharing policy Not dedicated high-volume hotlink infrastructure
Proton Drive Privacy-focused sharing Public links without a Proton account Check current plan Usually opens a Proton Drive sharing page
Sync.com Private collaboration Public sharing links Check current plan Designed for secure sharing, not raw embeds
Google Drive or OneDrive Ecosystem convenience Ordinary viewer or download links Depends on Google or Microsoft account Permissions, redirects, and viewer pages

1. MediaFire: best simple direct-link option

MediaFire is the best starting point for a user who wants a relatively simple public download URL without configuring object storage. MediaFire’s Pro upgrade page explicitly lists “Direct links to files.” The displayed Pro features also include 1 TB of storage, a 50 GB maximum file size, one-time links, password-protected files, file requests, bulk downloads, and 1 TB of ad-free standard transfers.

The pricing page displayed a discounted annual price of $5.83 per month, an original annual price of $8.33 per month, and a month-to-month price of $6.99 per month when the research was checked. Promotions, taxes, geography, and plan presentation can change, so treat those figures as observed pricing rather than a permanent guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MediaFire Pro fits public documents, ZIP archives, installers, and occasional media downloads. MediaFire should not be treated as a guaranteed CDN origin for a popular production website. Confirm that direct links are included in the account tier, check the applicable transfer policy, and test the URL without logging in.

2. Pixeldrain: best explicit hotlinking provider

Pixeldrain is the strongest match for readers specifically searching for file hosting with hotlinking. Pixeldrain states that paid users can embed files on external websites with iframe, video, and image elements, and can control which domains are allowed to embed files. That explicit embedding support makes Pixeldrain different from a normal cloud-storage share page.

Pixeldrain’s published limits include a free-user download allowance of 6 GB per day linked to an IP address. The standard Pro plan is listed at €4 per month or €40 per year, excluding tax, with 4 TB of transfer per 30 days. The product page also shows prepaid pricing signals of €4 per TB per month for storage and €1 per TB for egress, with a minimum daily fee, while higher paid tiers advertise file sizes up to 100 GB. The standard regular-upload maximum is listed as 10 GB per file.

Free users cannot hotlink, so a free Pixeldrain URL should not be presented as a permanent website asset solution. Hotlinking can stop when the transfer allowance is exceeded. Domain allowlisting can also cause an embed to fail even when the URL opens directly in a browser. The file’s MIME type matters: an image or video may render inline, while another file type may download as an attachment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Pixeldrain for forum images, community downloads, audio, video, and other externally embedded files when the traffic level fits the plan. Check the current Pixeldrain pricing and feature page before purchase because allowances and plan names can change.

3. Backblaze B2: best for developers, APIs, and custom domains

Backblaze B2 is the best choice when a website owner needs public object URLs, S3-compatible access, a custom asset domain, or CDN integration. Backblaze’s developer quick-start documentation explains the basic bucket and object workflow, while Backblaze documents serving public B2 content through Cloudflare using a custom domain.

A typical setup is:

  1. Create a Backblaze B2 account.
  2. Create a bucket and decide whether the bucket should be public.
  3. Upload the file through the dashboard, API, or S3-compatible tooling.
  4. Set the file’s content type and content disposition correctly.
  5. Copy the native B2 or S3-compatible object URL.
  6. Optionally place Cloudflare or another CDN in front of the bucket.
  7. Map a domain such as assets.example.com to the delivery layer.

A documented native URL can resemble:

https://f000.backblazeb2.com/file/mybucket/myimage.jpg

An S3-compatible URL generally follows the pattern:

Also popular on Amazon
https://<bucket-name>.<endpoint>/<file-name>

Backblaze B2 uses a usage-based model. The B2 pricing documentation should be checked for current storage, download, and transaction charges. Storage is only one part of the cost: public downloads, API requests, CDN services, and abuse controls can affect the total.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A public B2 bucket makes content accessible to anyone who obtains the URL. Use private buckets with signed URLs when access should expire, or add application logic and CDN controls when public delivery needs protection. Backblaze B2 is powerful, but it is not a one-click consumer file-sharing service.

4. Cloudinary: best for image and video delivery

Cloudinary is best when the file is a website or application media asset rather than an occasional document download. Cloudinary combines storage with media management, transformations, optimization, access controls, and CDN delivery. It can resize, crop, optimize, and convert images or deliver video through media URLs.

Cloudinary is a strong fit for product images, responsive images, video previews, and applications that need an image or video API. Developers can use transformations instead of creating and storing every size manually. The service is usually excessive for a few PDFs, ZIP archives, or personal downloads.

The displayed Cloudinary pricing page showed a 30-day free trial with 25 GB of storage, a Plus view at $99 per month monthly or $89 per month annually, and an Advanced view at $249 per month monthly or $224 per month annually. Cloudinary uses credits and includes multiple media-delivery dimensions, so the displayed prices should be rechecked before publication or purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Cloudinary when transformations, optimization, media APIs, and production delivery justify the extra complexity. Choose Backblaze B2 or a simpler file host when the requirement is merely “upload an archive and provide a download.”

5. pCloud: best consumer storage with a public folder

pCloud is a good consumer-storage option when a reader wants a Public Folder that generates public file URLs. pCloud’s Public Folder documentation describes public links for files and folders and positions the feature for direct links and static HTML hosting.

The important limitation is that pCloud separates storage capacity from public-link traffic. Downloads and streaming through shared links consume the plan’s link-traffic allowance, so unused storage does not necessarily mean unlimited public delivery. pCloud explains this distinction in its shared-link traffic guidance.

The pricing page displayed lifetime options including 500 GB for $299 and 2 TB for $599, alongside subscription plans. Those prices were observed in the supplied research on August 16–18, 2026; promotions, taxes, currency, and regional availability can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

pCloud suits public documents, personal media, and low-to-moderate static assets. Test the generated URL before using it in an application because a browser-download URL may not provide the exact MIME type, caching behavior, range requests, or cross-origin headers required by every embed.

6. FileLu: a promising direct-file alternative

FileLu is worth considering when direct links, remote URL uploads, and S3-compatible storage are more important than choosing a large, familiar cloud brand. FileLu’s premium page advertises direct file links, remote URL upload, S3-compatible object storage, secure cloud storage and backup, and family or team sharing on qualifying plans.

The supplied research shows plans beginning at $6, but it does not establish the exact storage, bandwidth, maximum-file-size, or retention allowance attached to that price. Treat FileLu as a promising candidate rather than a fully verified recommendation.

Before relying on FileLu for an important public asset, verify whether direct links are available on the free tier, whether inactivity can expire links, how bandwidth and abuse limits work, the maximum file size, whether all file types may be hotlinked, whether the original filename and extension are preserved, and what the refund and account-termination terms say.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Dropbox: best familiar sharing workaround

Dropbox is convenient for ordinary sharing and direct downloads, but a Dropbox share URL is not automatically a CDN-style hotlink. Dropbox says that users can create view-only links for people who do not have Dropbox accounts. Dropbox also documents two useful URL parameters: ?dl=1 can force a download, while ?raw=1 can bypass the preview page and allow the browser to render the file when the file and account conditions support that behavior.

Dropbox is suitable for client deliveries, documents, folders, and occasional downloadable files. Dropbox share URLs are a weak foundation for high-volume website assets because previews, redirects, permissions, rate limits, and account restrictions can affect behavior.

Read Dropbox’s force-download documentation rather than assuming that dl=1 creates a raw asset URL. A forced-download link is useful for a ZIP or installer but is normally unsuitable for an image that must render in an <img> element.

8. Proton Drive: best privacy-focused public sharing

Proton Drive is a good choice when privacy and account-independent sharing matter more than raw hotlinking. Proton Drive public links can be opened by recipients without a Proton account, according to Proton’s shareable-link documentation.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Proton Drive’s workflow is designed around a Proton-hosted page where a recipient can view or download the shared content. That is a public share link, not proof of a CDN-style raw file URL. End-to-end encryption and preview behavior can also affect whether a file works inside an image, video, or audio element.

Use Proton Drive for privacy-sensitive documents and large-file sharing with people outside the Proton ecosystem. Do not assume that a browser-openable link will work in <img src> or <video src> without testing the exact URL.

9. Sync.com: best secure collaboration alternative

Sync.com is better for controlled file sharing and collaboration than for website hotlinking. Sync.com provides link-based sharing from its web panel and emphasizes private cloud storage and collaboration. Its link-sharing documentation describes the normal workflow.

Sync.com links are intended for people opening a share page, not for serving assets directly to an external website. Sync.com’s documentation also recommends zipping large folders or folders containing thousands of files before sharing them individually, which is practical for client deliveries but not a hotlinking feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Sync.com when access control and private collaboration matter most. Do not label Sync.com a true hotlink provider unless the exact account type and URL behavior have been tested.

10. Google Drive or OneDrive: best if you already use that ecosystem

Google Drive and OneDrive are convenient for ecosystem-based sharing, but their official sharing links are primarily viewer or download pages rather than dedicated hotlink infrastructure. Google Drive fits Google Workspace collaboration and familiar document sharing. OneDrive fits Microsoft 365, Office documents, and business collaboration.

Both services can introduce viewer pages, redirects, permission changes, confirmation screens, or organizational policies that interfere with anonymous embedding. Large Google Drive files can produce warning or confirmation pages, and OneDrive links can be affected by Microsoft-account and tenant settings. Direct-link workarounds may also vary by file type and may not be officially supported.

Use Google Drive or OneDrive when recipients need normal access to a file and the owner already works in that ecosystem. Use Pixeldrain, B2, or Cloudinary when the requirement is a raw asset URL for a website or application. Current free-storage amounts and plan prices are intentionally omitted because the supplied evidence did not verify them on the official Google One and Microsoft pricing pages.

How do you test whether a file URL is truly direct?

A genuine hotlink test should examine the URL without a login, inspect HTTP headers, and place the URL inside the HTML element that the real website will use. A successful browser preview alone is not enough.

1. Test without an account or cookies

Open the URL in an incognito or private browser window. Repeat the test on a device that is not logged in to the provider. Confirm that the URL does not require a session, cookie, CAPTCHA, confirmation page, or manual download button.

2. Inspect the response headers

curl -I "DIRECT_URL_HERE"

Look for an expected 200 OK response or an understandable redirect, a correct Content-Type such as image/jpeg, video/mp4, or application/pdf, and the desired Content-Disposition. inline is generally appropriate for browser-rendered media; attachment is generally appropriate for forced downloads. Also inspect Location, Cache-Control, and CORS headers when JavaScript or canvas access is required.

3. Follow redirects and save the file

curl -L -o downloaded-file.bin "DIRECT_URL_HERE"

The -L option follows redirects. A link can be direct enough for a user while still redirecting one or more times, but an HTML preview response will not work as a raw file in most integrations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Test the actual HTML element

<img src="DIRECT_URL_HERE" alt="Test image">
<video controls src="DIRECT_URL_HERE"></video>
<audio controls src="DIRECT_URL_HERE"></audio>

Test the file type that the production site will use. An image URL can work while a video URL fails because of MIME types, range requests, authorization, or provider restrictions.

5. Test a large file and playback behavior

For video and large downloads, check whether the server supports byte-range requests, whether playback starts before the entire file downloads, and whether the provider applies per-IP or per-link throttling. Repeat the test from mobile data and another network when traffic controls are important.

How do bandwidth, permanence, and policy affect hotlinks?

Bandwidth is often more important than storage. Pixeldrain counts downloads, sharing, and hotlinking against transfer allowances, and pCloud separately meters traffic from public links. “Unlimited storage” therefore does not mean unlimited delivery.

Public URLs can also be copied to forums, scraped, embedded on unrelated websites, or used to consume an owner’s transfer allowance. Providers may throttle or suspend a popular link even when the account still has unused storage. Usage-based services such as Backblaze B2 can create an unexpected bill when a public file receives substantial traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A URL with no visible expiration date is not necessarily permanent. Link availability can change after inactivity, account downgrade, account deletion, copyright complaints, malware or abuse reports, excessive traffic, or a provider-policy decision. Do not advertise a provider as offering permanent links unless the provider explicitly guarantees that condition.

Keep an independent copy of important files, record the provider and account tier used for each public URL, and periodically test critical links. A production website should normally use object storage with a CDN, an image or video delivery platform, or another infrastructure designed for public assets rather than relying on a consumer share link as its only origin.

What should you use for different file types?

File type Preferred behavior Good candidates Important test
Images Raw URL with correct image MIME type and inline rendering Pixeldrain, Cloudinary, B2, pCloud <img>, CORS, caching, and domain restrictions
Video Raw URL with range requests and video MIME type Pixeldrain, Cloudinary, B2 <video>, seeking, authorization, and bandwidth
Audio Raw URL with audio MIME type Pixeldrain, B2, Cloudinary where appropriate <audio>, range requests, and inline behavior
PDF Inline viewer or forced attachment depending on the goal MediaFire, pCloud, Dropbox, B2 Content-Disposition and browser preview behavior
ZIP or installer Reliable direct download, usually attachment behavior MediaFire, Dropbox, B2, FileLu Redirects, checksum, file size, and anonymous access
Application assets Stable HTTPS URL, correct MIME type, cache policy, and predictable delivery B2 plus CDN or Cloudinary Custom domain, caching, CORS, range requests, and traffic cost

What is the final recommendation?

Choose MediaFire Pro for the simplest paid direct-download workflow, Pixeldrain Pro for explicitly supported hotlinking, Backblaze B2 plus Cloudflare for developer-controlled public assets, Cloudinary for transformed images and video, and pCloud for consumer storage with a public folder. Choose Proton Drive or Sync.com when secure sharing matters more than embedding. Treat Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive as convenient sharing tools rather than dedicated hotlink hosts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which file hosting provider is best for true hotlinking?

Pixeldrain is the clearest true-hotlinking choice in this comparison because its paid plans explicitly support iframe, image, and video embedding and domain controls. Free Pixeldrain users cannot hotlink, and transfer allowances still apply.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Dropbox as a direct image or video host?

Dropbox can force downloads with dl=1 and can sometimes bypass its preview page with raw=1, but a Dropbox share URL is not automatically a reliable production hotlink. Test the URL with the intended HTML element and inspect its headers before using it.

Are public links permanent?

A public link is not necessarily permanent. Inactivity, account changes, copyright or abuse reports, traffic limits, and provider policy decisions can disable a file or invalidate its URL, so important public assets should have an independent backup.

What is the best option for a custom domain such as assets.example.com?

Backblaze B2 placed behind Cloudflare or another CDN is the strongest option covered here for a custom asset domain. The setup requires bucket configuration, permissions, DNS or CDN configuration, correct metadata, and monitoring of storage, transfer, API, and CDN costs.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: A direct download link is not the same as a true hotlink. Use MediaFire Pro for straightforward public downloads, Pixeldrain Pro for explicit embedding, B2 plus a CDN for custom-domain infrastructure, and Cloudinary for managed image or video delivery. Test every URL without cookies and inside the exact HTML element your site will use.
