Equalizer APO + Peace is the best overall choice if you want a free, flexible equalizer that can process ordinary audio from browsers, games, Spotify, media players, and other Windows applications. FxSound is easier for beginners, SteelSeries Sonar is better for gaming and game/chat routing, Voicemeeter Banana is the strongest option for streaming and mixing, and SoundID Reference is the best fit for measured headphone or speaker correction.

These tools are not interchangeable. Some are system-wide equalizers, some are virtual mixers, some are hardware-dependent OEM utilities, one is primarily an audio-file editor, and two are companion interfaces that require another audio engine. This guide explains what each one does, which Windows audio paths it can affect, what it costs, and how to recover if installing an audio tool causes silence or routing problems.

Updated August 9, 2026: The software listed below may still run on Windows 10, but Windows 10 reached the end of normal support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says eligible users can obtain Extended Security Updates through October 2026; compatibility is not the same as continued operating-system support. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 lifecycle information.

Quick comparison: the best Windows equalizers

The ranking below is based on fit for common use cases, flexibility, setup difficulty, and the limitations documented by each project or vendor. It is not the result of a controlled listening test, and “best sound” is ultimately preference-dependent.

What Windows provides without installing an equalizer

Windows has an audio-processing framework that can expose effects such as Bass Boost, Loudness Equalization, virtual surround, and manufacturer-specific enhancements. The exact controls depend on the device driver and the PC manufacturer. Microsoft’s documentation explains that these effects are implemented through Audio Processing Objects, or APOs, in the Windows audio stack.

That does not make Windows 10 or Windows 11 a full-featured universal parametric equalizer. The standard Sound settings generally do not provide the flexible, device-by-device filter management found in Equalizer APO, Peace, or a dedicated calibration application. Realtek, Dolby, DTS, and Nahimic panels may provide more controls, but only when the computer, audio hardware, and installed OEM driver support them. Microsoft’s documentation on Windows default APOs describes the built-in effects and their limitations.

To check the controls available on your PC, open Settings → System → Sound, select the relevant output device, and look for Audio enhancements or Spatial sound. Older Control Panel options may be available under Settings → System → Sound → More sound settings → Playback → your device → Properties. If the options are absent, that usually reflects the driver or device rather than a missing Windows setting.

Equalizer APO is the processing engine. It works as a Windows Audio Processing Object and can provide graphic and parametric equalization, channel controls, preamp adjustment, VST plug-ins, and custom configuration files. Its official project information lists support for Windows 10 and Windows 11 on x64, x86, and ARM64, along with multiple channels, low latency, low CPU use, and a large number of filters. The official Equalizer APO project page also warns that applications using ASIO or WASAPI exclusive mode may bypass the Windows audio-effects path.

Peace is the easier-to-use graphical interface. It adds sliders, preset management, device selection, and a friendlier way to edit Equalizer APO configurations. It does not process sound by itself: if Equalizer APO is not working, installing Peace alone will not fix the problem. The Peace project files identify it as an extension for Equalizer APO.

Current versions

As of this article’s August 9, 2026 update, the Equalizer APO stable download page lists version 1.4.2, released March 21, 2025. The Peace files page lists version 1.6.9.11, with an installer build dated November 2, 2025. Version numbers can change, so use the official project pages rather than third-party download sites.

How to install it

  1. Download Equalizer APO from its official SourceForge project page.
  2. Run the installer. During setup, or afterward, open the Configurator.
  3. Select the exact playback device you want to process. Speakers, a USB DAC, Bluetooth headphones, HDMI audio, and a monitor’s audio output may appear as separate endpoints.
  4. Complete the installation and reboot if Windows or the installer requests it.
  5. Install Peace after Equalizer APO is installed.
  6. Open Peace, select the intended output device or configuration, and play a familiar track.
  7. Toggle the EQ off and on. A clearly audible change confirms that the selected path is being processed.

If nothing changes, test first with ordinary browser audio. Then reopen the Configurator and verify the selected endpoint. An exclusive-mode player, DAW, or application using ASIO may intentionally bypass Equalizer APO.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a custom or AutoEQ profile

AutoEQ generates equalizer settings from headphone measurements and target curves; it is not an equalizer application. Its supported-app guidance explains how generated settings can be used in compatible EQ programs.

  1. Identify the exact headphone model and revision.
  2. Check that the measurement matches the model, pads, and listening mode you use.
  3. Import or enter the filters in Peace or Equalizer APO.
  4. Apply the recommended negative preamp when the profile contains positive boosts.
  5. Compare the result with EQ bypassed at approximately the same loudness.
  6. Save separate profiles for music, games, and voice if one curve does not suit all three.

AutoEQ targets are not automatically perfect. Headphone fit, ear shape, pad wear, ANC mode, manufacturing variation, and personal taste all affect the result.

Strengths and limitations

  • Strengths: free and open-source ecosystem, system-wide processing for ordinary Windows audio, detailed filters, low overhead, VST support, and excellent support for custom headphone profiles.
  • Limitations: more technical installation, separate configuration for different output devices, possible conflicts with OEM effects and other APOs, and no effect on every ASIO or exclusive-mode application.

Equalizer APO also accepts configuration syntax such as this arbitrary GraphicEQ example:

GraphicEQ: 25 6; 40 4.5; 63 3; 100 1.5; 160 0; 250 0; 400 0; 630 0; 1000 0; 1600 0; 2500 0; 4000 0; 6300 1.5; 10000 3; 16000 3

This demonstrates the format only. It is not a universally recommended sound curve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. FxSound: best for beginners

Best for: quick presets, laptop speakers, music, movies, games, calls, and users who do not want to learn parametric EQ.

FxSound provides an equalizer, presets, bass and clarity controls, volume shaping, and other enhancement features through a virtual audio-driver architecture. Its official site describes FxSound as free and open source, and the project’s GitHub repository identifies the application and DSP source code as AGPL-licensed.

The official release history lists stable version 1.2.6.0, dated February 13, 2026, and a later 1.2.10.0 beta dated June 23, 2026. The download page offers Intel/AMD x86 and x64 builds as well as Windows ARM64 downloads.

FxSound is less technically flexible than Equalizer APO, but its presets and controls are easier to understand immediately. It is a good first choice if your goal is simply more bass, clearer dialogue, or a fuller sound. Avoid stacking it with another active equalizer, spatializer, or OEM enhancement suite until you have verified what each layer is doing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose it when: ease of use matters more than filter precision.
  • Skip it when: you need complex device-specific profiles, studio-neutral monitoring, or a detailed DSP chain.

3. SteelSeries Sonar: best for gaming and routing

Best for: game/chat/media separation, Discord, streaming, game-specific presets, and microphone processing.

SteelSeries Sonar is included with SteelSeries GG. It combines parametric EQ, presets, spatial audio, AI noise cancellation, and separate channels for game, chat, media, auxiliary audio, and microphone sources. The official Sonar feature page describes the separate source and device controls.

Sonar creates virtual devices such as SteelSeries Sonar – Game, SteelSeries Sonar – Chat, SteelSeries Sonar – Media, and SteelSeries Sonar – Aux. Those devices are central to its routing design, not unnecessary leftovers. Sonar may set its Game device as the Windows default playback device and its Chat device for communications applications. SteelSeries explains the behavior in its documentation about Sonar’s virtual devices and automatic Windows audio control.

This is powerful for gaming, but it can make Windows volume and per-application routing confusing. The physical headset or speakers must be selected inside Sonar, while applications may need to use the appropriate Sonar channel. Do not disable Sonar’s virtual devices in Device Manager if you still expect channel separation to work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Sonar devices disappear

  1. Close SteelSeries GG completely.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Open GG with administrator rights.
  4. Check Windows Sound settings and Device Manager.
  5. Update the relevant audio drivers if necessary.
  6. Reinstall GG only if the devices still do not return, then restart again.

That recovery sequence follows SteelSeries’ missing virtual-device guidance. Sonar is an excellent choice for gamers who want routing; it is excessive if all you need is one bass slider.

4. Voicemeeter Banana: best for streaming and advanced mixing

Best for: OBS, podcasts, live production, multiple microphones, several outputs, monitoring, and complex application routing.

Voicemeeter Banana is primarily a virtual audio mixer rather than a beginner EQ. Its official page describes three physical inputs, two virtual inputs, five outputs, virtual input/output devices, routing across multiple audio interfaces, and parametric EQ on buses. It can combine EQ with compression, gating, limiting, monitoring, and recording workflows.

The official page currently lists version 2.1.2.2, with a December 2025 package supporting Windows through Windows 11, including x86/x64 and ARM64. Installation and removal require administrator access and a reboot. See the official Voicemeeter Banana page and its user manual.

Voicemeeter is donationware. The current official shop lists a suggested contribution of approximately US$30 for a permanent license for a given PC configuration, but this is storefront information and may vary with currency or policy.

The trade-off is complexity. Incorrect monitoring can create feedback, doubled audio, echo, or silence. Before changing settings, draw a simple signal path: application → virtual input → bus → physical output. Then configure one output at a time. Choose Voicemeeter when routing is the problem; choose Equalizer APO when routing is not.

5. SoundID Reference: best for measured correction

Best for: headphone correction, studio monitoring, speaker calibration, and users who want a measured profile instead of a subjective bass or treble enhancement.

SoundID Reference is calibration software. It applies measured headphone or speaker profiles and custom target curves, and it supports both standalone system-wide processing and plug-in workflows. The supported-headphones catalog currently contains more than 500 profiles, including profiles labeled “For listening.” Check the exact model before relying on a profile; a different revision, pad, ANC mode, or fit can change the result.

Sonarworks’ release notes list version 5.13.7.1299, released July 7, 2026. That release addressed Windows launch crashes, custom-target editing, distorted test-signal playback, and measurement-related issues. The release notes, system requirements, and supported-headphones list are the appropriate places to verify current compatibility.

Choose the driver mode carefully

  • Virtual Windows audio driver: system-wide processing through a virtual device, with documented latency of approximately 40–160 ms. It does not work with ASIO-exclusive devices.
  • Windows audio device insert/APO: direct processing on a Windows audio device, with documented latency of approximately 7–10 ms. It uses less processing power but may conflict with other APO or device drivers.
  • Virtual Windows-to-ASIO: intended to calibrate Windows audio through an ASIO output, with documented latency of approximately 40–100 ms.
  • Virtual ASIO-to-ASIO: intended for DAW output and does not calibrate ordinary Windows playback.

These are different signal paths, not merely performance presets. SoundID requires login-based authorization, and its release notes state that offline activation has been removed. It is the right choice for correction and monitoring accuracy, but not the simplest free EQ.

6. Boom 3D: best polished enhancement suite

Best for: users who want an attractive interface, presets, spatial surround, headphone equalization, and app-level volume controls.

Boom 3D combines system-wide enhancement, EQ, spatial audio, presets, audio effects, volume controls, and headphone equalization. Its current Windows product page lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 support, version 2.3.0 released June 18, 2026, and a 15-day trial. The update includes spatial-surround improvements, expanded headphone support, a new Trap EQ preset, and interface changes. See the current Boom 3D product page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Boom 3D is commercial software after the trial. Prices and license terms vary by direct store, Microsoft Store, Steam, region, and promotion, so do not treat an old one-time price found in a comparison article as universal. Core operation can work offline, while internet radio and updates require internet access.

Its effects are deliberately colored. That can be enjoyable for music, movies, casual gaming, and weak laptop speakers, but it is not the same goal as neutral headphone correction. Use one spatializer or EQ chain at a time to avoid double processing.

7. DeskFX Audio Enhancer: best effects-heavy alternative

Best for: live bass enhancement, filters, reverb, chorus, vibrato, tremolo, and users who want more than conventional EQ.

DeskFX from NCH Software supports graphic, parametric, and visual EQ modes, live low- and high-pass filters, bass enhancement, reverb, chorus, vibrato, tremolo, and an equalizer with up to 20 bands. Its documentation describes it as system-wide processing. See the DeskFX feature documentation.

  • Gaming & Voice Chat Ready: The 3.5mm interface supports 3-pole (TRS) & 4-pole (TRRS) plugs, allowing you to plug in headset with a built-in microphone and retain full voice call function, ideal for gaming streaming podcasting on PC/mobile device
  • RCA/3.5mm Routing: While you must select between either RCA or 3.5mm input, both RCA and 3.5mm outputs can be used simultaneously, allowing you to route audio to your headphones and desktop speakers at the same time

Licensing is not simply “free.” NCH’s current store page lists normal annual rates of approximately US$40 per year for the Home personal license and US$50 per year for the commercial Plus license, before regional taxes and subject to promotional changes. Verify the current trial limitations and price before buying from the official licensing page.

DeskFX is useful when effects are the point. If your goal is measured headphone correction or a modular enthusiast DSP chain, Equalizer APO or SoundID Reference is usually a better fit.

8. Realtek Audio Console and other OEM audio suites

Best for: basic EQ for built-in laptop speakers, motherboard analog outputs, or a manufacturer-supported audio driver.

Realtek Audio Console, Dolby, DTS, Nahimic, and similar tools are normally supplied with a PC manufacturer’s audio package. They may expose EQ, loudness, speaker, microphone, room, or spatial controls without adding a separate third-party audio architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The limitation is hardware dependence. An OEM panel may affect the laptop’s internal speakers or 3.5-mm jack but not a USB headset, Bluetooth headphones, HDMI monitor, or external DAC. A generic driver update can also remove the manufacturer’s enhancements. Secondary coverage notes the dependency on the exact audio hardware and driver; see this overview of Windows equalizer options for context.

Check the OEM utility first if you only need a few basic controls. If it is missing, limited, or does not affect your current output, use a system-wide tool such as Equalizer APO instead. Do not rank an OEM panel as a universal alternative because its behavior changes from one PC to another.

9. WavePad: best for equalizing audio files

Best for: podcast editing, voice recordings, permanent file processing, restoration, and batch workflows.

WavePad is an audio editor, not a live Windows equalizer. It provides visual, graphic, and parametric equalizers, presets, VST and DirectX support, batch processing, and Windows support through Windows 11. Its EQ changes the recording or imported file inside the editor; it does not automatically process YouTube, Spotify, games, Discord, or every other Windows application. See the official WavePad EQ information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Including WavePad in a list of audio equalizer software is useful only if the category is explained. Choose it when you want to export a permanently processed file. Do not install it expecting a system-wide sound effect.

10. HeSuVi: best specialist surround companion

Best for: headphone surround experimentation, virtual 7.1 profiles, and impulse-response processing.

HeSuVi is a graphical wrapper focused on virtual surround and headphone impulse responses. It requires Equalizer APO first, so it is not a standalone equalizer engine. The official download page lists Windows 10/11 64-bit compatibility and explains the Equalizer APO dependency. The latest stable build shown there is dated May 20, 2024, so its update cadence should not be confused with that of Equalizer APO or SoundID Reference.

Surround virtualization can help some games and headphones, but it can also sound unnatural, reduce clarity, or make positional cues less reliable. Test profiles individually rather than assuming that virtual 7.1 is automatically better for competitive gaming. HeSuVi makes the most sense for a reader already using Equalizer APO who specifically wants headphone surround or impulse-response processing.

How to choose graphic EQ, parametric EQ, or correction

Graphic equalizer

A graphic EQ gives you fixed frequency bands with sliders. It is easy to understand and suitable for broad changes such as reducing excessive bass or adding a little treble. The trade-off is limited precision: the available bands and filter widths may not match the frequency problem you are trying to address.

Parametric equalizer

A parametric EQ lets you set a filter’s frequency, gain, and Q or bandwidth. It is more precise for headphone profiles, room problems, and narrow resonances, but it requires more care. Equalizer APO, Peace, Sonar, Voicemeeter, SoundID Reference, and DeskFX support some form of parametric control, although their filter counts and interfaces differ.

In practical terms:

  • Frequency identifies where the filter acts, such as 100 Hz for bass or 4 kHz for upper-midrange presence.
  • Gain determines the cut or boost, measured in decibels.
  • Q or bandwidth determines how wide the adjustment is.
  • Preamp or headroom prevents boosted bands from exceeding digital full scale.
  • Target curve describes the tonal balance a correction profile is trying to reach.

Correction versus enhancement

  • Correction attempts to compensate for a measured headphone, speaker, or room response.
  • Enhancement intentionally changes the sound for more bass, loudness, width, or excitement.
  • Routing and mixing control where audio goes and how channels are combined.
  • Editing permanently changes an audio file.

SoundID Reference belongs mainly to correction. FxSound and Boom 3D emphasize enhancement. Voicemeeter emphasizes routing and mixing. WavePad emphasizes editing. Equalizer APO can serve any of these purposes if configured appropriately.

Prevent clipping and avoid double processing

Positive EQ gain can cause digital clipping even when the original recording was clean. Start with a negative preamp when applying several boosts, listen for distortion, and compare EQ on and off at matched loudness. Louder is not automatically better.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For troubleshooting, temporarily disable other processing layers such as:

  • Another system-wide equalizer.
  • OEM Realtek, Dolby, DTS, or Nahimic enhancements.
  • Windows spatial audio.
  • Headset software or hardware EQ.
  • Virtual mixers and audio cables.
  • Volume boosters or loudness effects.

Microsoft lists audio enhancements, unsupported formats, drivers, and Windows audio services among possible causes of distorted or poor-quality audio. Its distorted or crackling audio guide is useful when the issue is not limited to one EQ preset.

Rank #4
7 Band Sound Equalizer 2 Channel Audio Mixer Equalizer Digital Sound Equalizer
  • Note: - 3.5mm phone audio cable is not included in the package. - A power bank or a quality charger can be used to supply power to the device, because an impure power supply may cause AC noise.

Why a system-wide EQ may not work

“System-wide” means that software processes an ordinary Windows audio path. It does not mean that the software can intercept every possible audio stream. The following can bypass or avoid the selected processing layer:

  • ASIO-exclusive playback.
  • WASAPI exclusive mode.
  • Raw or application-specific audio modes.
  • Hardware DSP inside a DAC, headset, or interface.
  • An application routed around a virtual audio device.
  • A playback endpoint that was not selected during configuration.

Bluetooth headphones, USB DACs, HDMI audio, speakers, and a 3.5-mm jack are often separate Windows endpoints. An EQ configured for speakers may not automatically apply to a newly connected USB headset. Sleep/wake events and driver updates can also change the active route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recovery guide for common audio problems

Equalizer APO produces no audible change

  1. Play ordinary browser audio rather than testing first in a DAW or exclusive-mode player.
  2. Open the Equalizer APO Configurator.
  3. Select the exact playback endpoint currently in use.
  4. Reboot or restart the relevant audio application.
  5. Temporarily disable other virtual audio tools and OEM effects.
  6. Turn off exclusive mode in the application’s or Windows device settings and test again.
  7. Check the Equalizer APO log if the device still is not processed.

USB, Bluetooth, HDMI, and newly connected devices commonly require a separate Configurator selection.

A virtual-driver application causes silence

  1. Open Settings → System → Sound.
  2. Select the physical speakers, headset, DAC, or interface directly.
  3. Confirm that the device is connected, powered, and not muted.
  4. Open the third-party application and select that same physical output.
  5. Restart the affected application and, if necessary, Windows Audio.
  6. Only after documenting the configuration should you disable or uninstall the problematic virtual device.

Do not begin by deleting random audio devices in Device Manager. First determine whether the physical output works when selected directly.

Sonar routing is wrong

  • Set Windows output to the intended Sonar Game channel or physical device.
  • Set Discord to Sonar Chat if separate chat routing is wanted.
  • Select the physical headset or speakers inside Sonar.
  • Make sure Sonar virtual devices have not been disabled.
  • Check Windows per-app volume settings for an application routed to a different output.

SteelSeries states that its virtual devices are part of Sonar’s channel-separation architecture. Disabling them can remove the personalized routing that Sonar needs.

SoundID Reference has too much latency or will not work with an interface

Choose the driver path based on the job. The APO path generally has lower documented latency but can conflict with other APO drivers. A virtual Windows-to-ASIO path is designed for system audio through an ASIO output but introduces more latency. An ASIO-to-ASIO path is intended for DAW output and does not calibrate the rest of Windows. Consult SoundID Reference’s Windows driver-mode documentation before changing the route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows audio is distorted after applying EQ

Reduce the preamp, remove positive boosts, bypass other enhancement layers, and test the original signal. Then check the output format and driver. If the distortion remains with all processing disabled, follow Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps rather than continuing to adjust EQ.

If your audio problem also involves missing, outdated, incompatible, or repeatedly crashing Windows audio drivers, an optional tool such as Outbyte Driver Updater can help identify driver issues; it is not required for equalizer installation, and you should prefer the PC or device manufacturer’s driver when one is specifically supplied for your hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Windows 11 have a built-in equalizer?

Windows 11 includes audio enhancements such as Bass Boost or Loudness Equalization when the installed device driver exposes them, but it does not provide one universal, full-featured parametric equalizer for every output. The available controls depend on the hardware and driver.

Is Peace a standalone equalizer?

No. Peace is a graphical interface for Equalizer APO. Install and configure Equalizer APO first; Peace provides the easier interface for presets, filters, and device selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will an equalizer work with Bluetooth headphones?

Often, yes, but Bluetooth headphones appear as their own Windows playback endpoint. Equalizer APO and similar tools may need that endpoint selected separately. Headset hardware DSP, hands-free mode, exclusive playback, or a virtual audio route can prevent processing.

Will EQ work with Discord, games, Spotify, and YouTube?

A system-wide tool can process ordinary Windows playback from these applications when they use the selected Windows audio path. It may not affect an application using ASIO, WASAPI exclusive mode, raw audio, hardware DSP, or a different output device.

Can I use more than one equalizer?

You can, but it is usually better to start with one active processing chain. Stacking Equalizer APO, Sonar, Boom 3D, OEM effects, spatial audio, and headset EQ can cause clipping, excessive coloration, latency, or difficult troubleshooting.

Does EQ reduce audio quality?

EQ itself does not automatically reduce quality. Poorly chosen boosts can cause clipping, and multiple virtual-driver or resampling stages can complicate the signal path. Use sensible headroom, avoid unnecessary processing, and compare EQ on and off at matched loudness.

What is the best free equalizer for Windows?

Equalizer APO + Peace is the strongest free general-purpose choice for ordinary Windows system audio. FxSound is easier for beginners, while HeSuVi is a specialist companion for users who specifically want headphone surround.

What is the best equalizer for headphones?

For free, flexible correction, use Equalizer APO + Peace with a profile from a reputable measurement workflow such as AutoEQ. For paid, measured correction with supported headphone profiles and target curves, SoundID Reference is the more specialized choice.

What works with ASIO?

There is no single answer because ASIO can bypass ordinary Windows effects. Equalizer APO may not affect ASIO-exclusive applications. SoundID Reference provides separate Windows-to-ASIO and ASIO-to-ASIO workflows, but the selected mode determines whether it processes all Windows audio or only a DAW path.

Why did sound disappear after installing an equalizer?

The most common causes are a wrong default output, an incorrectly configured virtual device, a physical device not selected inside the application, a disabled virtual channel, or a conflict with another audio driver. Select the physical output directly in Windows first, then check the application’s output and restart it.

Can Windows 10 still run these programs after end of support?

Many of the listed programs still document Windows 10 compatibility, but Windows 10 reached the end of normal support on October 14, 2025. That means software compatibility does not provide ongoing free security updates for the operating system. Eligible users may use Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates program through October 2026.

Should I use an OEM equalizer or Equalizer APO?

Use the OEM utility first when you only need basic controls for a built-in laptop or motherboard output and the manufacturer supports it. Use Equalizer APO when you need flexible filters, profiles, or more consistent control across ordinary Windows audio devices.

The Bottom Line

For most Windows users, install Equalizer APO first and Peace second if you want the best free system-wide EQ. Choose FxSound when simplicity matters more than precision, Sonar when game/chat routing matters, Voicemeeter Banana when mixing is the real problem, and SoundID Reference when measured headphone or speaker correction is the goal. Whichever tool you choose, configure the correct output, keep headroom for boosts, and avoid stacking several audio processors without a specific reason.
