Documentation for a Zwiki 0.20 deployment at Purdue University describes collaborative page editing, comments, creating pages, and simple text formatting. A retrospective overview also reports additional markup and editing options, but the available sources do not establish whether Zwiki works with current Zope releases.
What was Zwiki?
Zwiki was software for building a collaborative wiki: a website where people could share and maintain content by editing pages. Purdue University’s help page for Zwiki version 0.20 describes the idea this way: “Wikis try to put as little as possible in the way of people sharing useful content in a manageable way.” That page documents a particular Zwiki deployment, not a guarantee that every site offered the same settings or behavior. Purdue University’s Zwiki help page
Zwiki is historically linked to Zope, a Python web application server. A Zope community overview recounts Zope’s roots in open-source web-publishing components and the opening of Principia in 1998. This historical association should not be confused with evidence that Zwiki is supported by modern Zope.
What could users do with Zwiki?
Edit and create pages
The Purdue documentation says users could edit pages and add new ones, subject to the site’s rules. That made a Zwiki site a shared space for building and revising information rather than a set of pages controlled only by a single publisher.

Comment and format content
The same help page describes adding comments and using intuitive formatting rules: contributors could write readable text that Zwiki would present in formatted form. The exact rules and available controls depended on the documented installation.
Use a wiki as a simple mailing list
Purdue’s help page also notes that a Zwiki site could serve as a simple mailing list. This describes a possible use of that deployment; it does not establish that every Zwiki installation included mailing-list features.

What markup and editing options were reported?
A retrospective LinuxLinks overview reports support for MoinMoin, Structured Text, and reStructuredText markup. It also reports that pages could be edited in LaTeX or through a WYSIWYG HTML interface. These are secondary-source descriptions of historical Zwiki features, not verified capabilities for a current installation.
The LinuxLinks overview also mentions Zope add-ons for undo, transactions, membership, and cross-site syncing. It does not establish the versions or setup conditions required, so these should be treated as reported extensions rather than features assured in every Zwiki deployment.

Does Zwiki still work with current Zope?
The available sources do not resolve current Zwiki maintenance or compatibility. Zope’s present release status cannot answer that question: the Zope release schedule listed Zope 6.2 as current in August 2026, Zope 5.14 as the current 5.x release with security support through December 31, 2026, and Zope 2.13 as end of life. These are Zope lifecycle facts, not Zwiki support statements.
Current Zope installation documentation describes pip and zc.buildout installation routes and Python prerequisites for Zope 6. Those instructions install Zope; they do not establish that Zwiki can be installed on it. Likewise, older Zope 4 installation guidance recommends Zope 5 for new installations and is not a Zwiki setup guide or compatibility matrix.
Anyone assessing an existing Zwiki site should verify its exact Zwiki and Zope versions, Python runtime, add-ons, and stored content before upgrading or moving it. The cited sources do not provide a current Zwiki repository, maintenance statement, or compatibility matrix.

The title phrase “powered many” is not backed here by a quantified adoption figure. The available sources establish a documented Zwiki deployment and its connection to Zope, but do not count Zwiki installations or verify how many ran with or without Zope. It is therefore safer to describe Zwiki as a Zope-associated wiki engine than to treat “many” as a measured adoption claim.
