Its Windows App Support feature uses Wine, a compatibility layer—not Windows itself. Zorin OS 17.1 is now an older release; anyone considering Zorin today should evaluate the current OS 18.1 and test their apps and hardware before migrating.
What changed in Zorin OS 17.1?
Zorin’s 17.1 announcement said its built-in installer-detection database recognized more than 100 Windows apps and games. When it recognized an installer, Zorin could suggest a tailored alternative instead of simply asking the user to run the Windows executable. For example, Zorin said that launching the Windows installers for Opera Browser or Todoist could direct users to their native Linux versions in the Software store. Wine and Bottles
Zorin said Windows App Support in 17.1 used Wine 9.0. Wine translates Windows software calls so that some Windows programs can run on Linux; it does not install a copy of Windows. Zorin also included Bottles when enabled, describing it as a way to organize Windows apps and games in sandboxed environments and use preconfigured software from a built-in app store. Those descriptions come from Zorin’s announcement and should not be read as a guarantee that a particular program will run correctly.
Other release highlights
Zorin OS 17.1 also introduced an Education edition, LibreOffice 24.2, and additional file thumbnails, including for .exe and .epub files. Zorin reported updates to the kernel, graphics stack, and drivers, including improvements involving Intel Core Ultra, AMD Zen 4, NVIDIA graphics, Wi-Fi 7, Steam Deck, and more game controllers. Can I run Windows apps on Zorin OS?
Sometimes. Zorin’s help documentation says that many Windows apps can be installed using Wine, but also warns that “not all Windows apps may be fully compatible with Windows App Support in Zorin OS.” Compatibility can depend on the exact application version and the features you need; the official guidance does not establish that every app, peripheral, or Windows-dependent feature will work. Check for a native or web version first
Before relying on Wine, check whether the developer offers a Linux version or a usable web version. Zorin recommends looking in the Software store or on the developer’s website, and suggests trying a native alternative when the app has no Linux version. A native app or web service avoids depending on Wine compatibility for that task.

Check the particular features you need
For a Windows-only program, verify the exact app and version, then check the functions you rely on—not just whether it opens. A program may launch while a required feature, update, plug-in, or device integration does not work as expected. The Zorin documentation warns of incomplete compatibility; it does not provide an independent, app-by-app success audit.
Microsoft Office and other must-have software
The available Zorin guidance does not establish that a particular Microsoft Office desktop version or feature set works through Windows App Support. If Office is essential, identify the exact desktop functions, add-ins, file workflows, and collaboration features you require, then verify that your chosen Linux or web alternative meets them—or test the specific Windows version before migrating. Do not treat general Wine support as confirmation that Office will meet your needs.

How to install an .exe or .msi file on Zorin OS
Zorin documents this process for Windows installers. Only use installers from a source you trust: Zorin warns that software from unknown sources can put your computer and personal data at risk. Zorin Help: Windows App Support
- Check whether the app has a native Linux version in the Software store or on the developer’s website. If it does not, consider a native alternative.
- Download the original .exe or .msi installer from a source you trust.
- Open Files and locate the downloaded installer.
- Double-click the installer and follow its prompts. On first use, Zorin may ask you to install Windows App Support.
- After installation, open the app and test the specific tasks you depend on.
Can I play Windows games on Zorin OS?
Zorin’s game guidance points users first to Steam Play (Proton), Lutris, or Heroic Games Launcher for Windows games. If those options do not work for a particular title, its instructions point to Windows App Support. What is different in current Zorin OS 18.1?
Zorin OS 17.1 is no longer the current release. Zorin announced OS 18 on 14 October 2025 and OS 18.1 on 15 April 2026. Zorin says OS 18 moved Windows App Support to Wine 10 and continued to direct some Windows installers toward web apps or native Linux options. For OS 18.1, Zorin said its recommendation database covered more than 240 app installers. Zorin says OS 18 receives software updates and security patches until at least June 2029; the 18.1 announcement gives the same support horizon. By contrast, Zorin’s stated support end for the OS 17 series was June 2027. Check Zorin’s official OS page for current release and support information.

How to decide whether switching makes sense
Build the decision around your actual work and devices, rather than the headline count of recognized installers.
- List must-have applications: For each one, note whether a native Linux build, a usable web version, or only a Windows installer is available.
- Verify essential tasks: For Windows-only apps, check the exact version and features you need. Do not assume that successful installation means every feature works.
- Check games separately: Look into Steam Play (Proton), Lutris, or Heroic for each title you care about before depending on Windows App Support.
- Check hardware: Verify that your computer’s graphics, Wi-Fi, printers, controllers, and other important peripherals work with the release you plan to use.
- Try before installing: Zorin says you can test-drive the OS from a USB flash drive without installing it. Use that session to check hardware and desktop usability; it cannot prove that every Windows application will work. Zorin OS official homepage
Zorin also reported in 2024 that OS 17 had received more than half a million downloads after just over two months, with more than 78% coming from proprietary platforms such as Windows and macOS.
