Zollner Elektronik AG developed and built the machine for the production; Guinness World Records lists it as the largest walking robot.
What is Tradinno?
Tradinno is a giant, radio-controlled walking dragon created for the Drachenstich, a folk play staged in Germany. Guinness’s 2013 feature calls the robot Fanny, also known as Project Tradinno—a blend of “tradition” and “innovation.” Zollner’s company history records the project as a 2012 milestone, describing the company’s development, design and construction of the world’s largest four-legged walking robot.
The project had been underway for years before that milestone. A contemporaneous ELEKTRONIKPRAXIS report says concept verification for the main project began in February 2007. It describes a 15-person development team spanning mechanics, electronics and software, working with 35 project partners and institutes.
How large is the dragon?
The published measurements differ substantially, especially for width and height. Guinness World Records’ current listing gives its record display date as 27 September 2012 and lists the robot at 15.72 m long, 12.33 m wide and 8.20 m high. A 2012 ELEKTRONIKPRAXIS engineering report instead describes a body 15.50 m long, 3.80 m wide and 4.50 m high, with a separate 12.00 m wingspan. The sources do not explain the discrepancy, so these figures should not be treated as interchangeable.

How does Tradinno move and perform?
Walking and control
Guinness’s 2013 account says the 11-tonne dragon uses a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine rated at 140 hp. Each of its four legs has seven degrees of motion, which Guinness says allow lateral movement and cornering. The contemporaneous ELEKTRONIKPRAXIS report describes Tradinno as radio-controlled, capable of outdoor operation and limited to a listed maximum speed of 1.8 km/h. Those are published specifications, not independent performance-test results.

Hydraulics, sensors and control hardware
The 2012 technical report describes two hydraulic circuits: one operating at 220 bar high pressure and another at 80 bar low pressure. It lists 272 hydraulic valves, 65 animated axes and 238 sensors, alongside 300 metres of hydraulic lines, 1,300 metres of electrical lines and 110 metres of pneumatic lines. Nine modular control units, each with two processors, managed the system; the report also notes redundant communication and sensor/actuator arrangements.
A purpose-built transport vehicle was developed to move the robot. That logistics detail matters for a machine of this scale: the dragon was designed as a mobile stage effect, but getting it to and from a performance was also part of the engineering problem.

Wings, blood and fire
Guinness says the wings were made from polyurethane and reinforced plastic. For the theatrical effect, veins in the dragon held stage blood, while liquid gas supplied the fire effect. These stage features are distinct from the systems that power and control its walking motion.

Guinness World Records lists Zollner Elektronik AG as the maker of the largest walking robot, with a record display date of 27 September 2012. That distinction describes the machine’s scale and category; it does not establish that Tradinno is autonomous or comparable in purpose to modern quadrupeds built for inspection or industrial work. The available accounts characterize it as a remote-controlled theatrical dragon, engineered to move outdoors and deliver a folk-play spectacle.
