YouTube’s Player for Education lets teachers show selected videos in a school-friendly embedded player without ads, recommendations, comments or open browsing. It is separate from YouTube Courses, which organize learning into structured experiences, and quizzes, which creators can add to some course videos.

What students see in Player for Education

Player for Education is an embedded player designed for education tools, not a separate YouTube website for students. In YouTube’s July 21, 2026 announcement, students using it are restricted by default to videos their teacher assigns. The player removes ads, the standard sidebar, recommendations and comments, and it does not link out to the main YouTube platform. YouTube’s classroom-player announcement describes broader browsing as optional; enabling it requires administrator action and parental consent.

This arrangement gives a teacher a way to use a selected YouTube video without opening the usual browsing experience. It does not mean every video played in the embedded player comes with a lesson plan, Course or assessment.

How schools control access

YouTube says access to YouTube is off by default for K–12 education accounts. Teachers can still assign or show selected videos through Player for Education in compatible tools, even if students are blocked from or cannot access youtube.com. This allows a school to permit assigned-video viewing without granting open access to YouTube. See YouTube’s school and district administration guidance for its account-control details.

Availability depends on the school’s configuration and the software it uses. YouTube’s current integration list includes Google Workspace for Education, Instructure, Edpuzzle, GoGuardian, HonorEd, Kahoot!, Newsela, Screencastify, Seesaw, Teachmint, Wayground and WeVideo, among others. The list can change; confirm with the school’s administrator or provider whether a particular tool is supported and enabled.

YouTube says Player for Education does not personalize content: teacher and student views are not connected back to their YouTube accounts, and watch history is not tracked over time. That describes YouTube’s stated behavior for this player; it is not a broader legal privacy guarantee about a school, platform or other software.

Courses and quizzes are separate learning features

YouTube Courses are structured, multi-session learning experiences intended to take learners beyond a set of isolated videos. According to YouTube’s help page, ad-supported Courses are free to watch and available to all users, with ads unless the viewer has YouTube Premium. Courses can show progress and completion badges. Creators can also add quizzes to test knowledge of specific videos. Details are in YouTube’s guide to taking a Course and its overview of learning tools.

The distinction matters: Player for Education controls how a teacher-assigned video is presented in a school tool; Courses provide structure and progress features on YouTube; quizzes are creator-added checks associated with Courses. A school-player video does not automatically include a Course or quiz.

How creators can be paid for ad-free school viewing

The lack of ads in Player for Education does not necessarily mean creators receive no compensation. YouTube describes a licensing model in which education partners pay fees to license the player. A creator who is offered and accepts YouTube’s payment terms can earn a share based on their proportion of monthly watch time in the player. Videos must have embedding enabled to be considered. YouTube says contracts are offered to newly eligible creators when there is demand, so participation and payment are not automatic. See YouTube’s Player for Education guidance.

What the reported figures say—and do not say

YouTube’s April 28, 2026 overview reports that U.S. students watched more than 40 million hours of content through Player for Education in the first half of 2025. It also says 94% of teachers use YouTube; the overview does not provide a separate study citation alongside that figure. These are platform-reported usage figures, not evidence by themselves that the player improves learning outcomes.

  • HDMI connectivity transfers video and audio through single cable
  • Speaker is built-in for engaging projector displays

The same overview attributes another figure to Oxford Economics’ 2025 work: 79% of U.S. teachers who use YouTube agree it helps students learn. That is a reported teacher view, not a measured student-outcome result. Separately, Instructure said in an August 8, 2025 announcement that more than eight million YouTube videos had been added to Canvas LMS courses in the prior year and that YouTube embeds in Canvas had increased 52% since 2022. Those figures describe reported use and embed growth, not the effectiveness of any individual course or platform. Instructure’s announcement provides its figures.

Choosing an approach for classroom video

For a school deciding how to show online video, the relevant question is not which learning platform is universally best; it is whether the school’s setup matches its access and teaching needs. Check these points with the administrator or platform provider:

  • Whether students can view only teacher-assigned videos or can browse beyond them.
  • Whether ads, recommendations, comments and external links are removed in the viewing experience.
  • Whether the school’s existing learning-management system or edtech tools support and enable Player for Education.
  • What administrator settings and parental-consent steps apply if broader YouTube browsing is considered.
  • Whether the school’s privacy expectations align with YouTube’s stated player behavior and the policies of its other software providers.
  • Whether a Course or creator-added quiz is actually available when structured progress or assessment is needed.

YouTube introduced Player for Education in 2022 as a way to support distraction-reduced classroom viewing. In that launch announcement, EDpuzzle CEO and co-founder Quim Sabrià said the player would let students engage with new subjects “distraction-free.” That was a partner endorsement at launch, not a current product specification. YouTube’s 2022 announcement preserves that historical context.
