What’s actually slowing this PC down?

First check which OBS counter is rising: network dropped frames usually point to an unstable connection to YouTube or a bitrate your upload cannot sustain; rendering lag or encoding overload points instead to GPU workload or encoding throughput. AMD AMF is not automatically the cause. Match your settings to the problem, then test again with a representative stream.
Identify what OBS means by “dropped frames”
Open OBS’s status area while streaming and watch the network dropped-frames, rendering-lag, and encoding-overload indicators. Save a log from a session that reproduces the problem; it records useful context for diagnosing the specific setup. OBS distinguishes connection drops from performance issues: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” See OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide and its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide.
- Network dropped frames rise: troubleshoot upload stability, bitrate, and the route to YouTube ingest.
- Rendering lag rises: OBS may not be rendering frames quickly enough, often because the GPU is busy.
- Encoding overload rises: the encoder or system may not be keeping up with the selected output workload.
These can look similar in a viewer’s playback, but they call for different fixes. Do not treat the network counter as proof that AMF is defective.
Set YouTube-compatible streaming basics
Start with YouTube’s ingest requirements, then use only the options supported by your installed OBS, AMD GPU, operating system, and AMF implementation. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Its current live encoder guidance lists H.264 at 1080p60 with a 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended bitrate. Those are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain the recommended rate. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In OBS, open Settings → Output and select the Streaming tab. Choose the AMD hardware encoder option available on your system, if supported.
- Set the rate control to CBR if that option is available, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds.
- In Settings → Stream, use the YouTube service and a stream key configured for the intended broadcast. YouTube recommends RTMPS; use it when the connection/server option available in your OBS setup supports it.
- Choose an output resolution and frame rate your GPU and connection can sustain. For H.264 at 1080p60, use YouTube’s bitrate range as a reference, not as a target to force onto an unstable connection.
OBS’s published AMD values of CQP 16–23, keyframe interval 2, Quality preset, High profile, and Max B-frames 0 are from its advanced recording settings guide. They are recording baselines, not a universal YouTube AMF streaming recipe. For streaming, prioritize YouTube’s CBR and keyframe guidance, then adjust the live controls actually shown by your OBS and AMF versions.
If the network dropped-frames counter rises
Bring bitrate within stable upload capacity
Lower the streaming bitrate and test again. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when lowering bitrate in its connection troubleshooting guide. Treat that only as a troubleshooting starting point: one speed test does not establish stable capacity over a full stream. If you cannot sustain YouTube’s recommended bitrate, reduce bitrate or output demands rather than selecting a number your connection cannot hold.

Improve or isolate the connection
- Use wired Ethernet for a comparison test if you are on Wi-Fi; OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable. A cable is a test, not a guaranteed fix.
- Try a different YouTube ingest server if OBS offers one.
- Check whether a VPN, security software, or network-optimization software is interfering. Temporarily testing without a suspected network intermediary can help isolate the cause.
- Restart or inspect the router/modem and network drivers if connection instability continues.
- Testing another streaming service can help determine whether the behavior is service-specific; it is an isolation step, not a YouTube fix.
Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS offers “Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta)” as a way to lower bitrate rather than drop frames when the connection cannot keep up. It does not resolve the underlying network problem and can reduce picture quality, so prefer fixing stability or choosing a sustainable fixed bitrate where possible.
If rendering lag or encoding overload rises
Reduce the work OBS and the encoder have to complete for each frame, then retest. OBS’s performance guidance recommends running OBS as administrator on Windows, checking competing GPU workloads, and reducing output resolution or frame rate. Close known GPU-heavy applications, simplify demanding scenes, and test with the same sources and motion you expect in the real broadcast.

- On Windows, run OBS as administrator. This may help OBS obtain the resources it needs; it does not guarantee a fix.
- Check GPU competition. Close or reduce known GPU-heavy tasks and simplify effects or scenes that are not necessary.
- Reduce output resolution. Test a lower output resolution before assuming a different AMF preset will solve the overload.
- Reduce frame rate if needed. If 60 fps is not sustainable, test 30 fps, a documented OBS troubleshooting option.
- Repeat the representative stream test. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which change affects the counter.
AMF availability and compatible options depend on the GPU and platform. OBS supports AMD AMF on Windows and Linux, but compatibility varies; consult OBS’s Hardware Encoding guidance and keep graphics drivers current.
Test changes against the real workload
After each change, run a test long enough to reproduce the issue and include audio, video movement, scene changes, and sources similar to the intended broadcast. Monitor OBS’s counters and YouTube stream health. A very short or unrelated test may not expose congestion or overload. Record the configuration that changed and whether the relevant counter improved; avoid changing bitrate, frame rate, and encoder settings all at once.

Common symptoms and fixes
| What you see | Likely area to investigate | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Network dropped frames increase while rendering and encoding remain okay | Connection to ingest or bitrate capacity | Lower bitrate, test wired Ethernet, check VPN/network software, and try another ingest server. |
| Rendering lag increases | GPU rendering load | Reduce scene complexity or output resolution; close competing GPU workloads. |
| Encoding overload increases | Encoding throughput or system workload | Reduce output resolution or frame rate; on Windows, run OBS as administrator. |
| Drops occur only at a high bitrate or during busy network periods | Insufficient sustained upload headroom or instability | Choose a lower sustainable bitrate; OBS’s 75% suggestion is a starting point, not a capacity guarantee. |
| Problem persists after generic changes | Setup-specific compatibility or configuration | Review the OBS log and provide GPU model, OS, OBS build, driver version, output resolution/frame rate, available AMF options, and the affected log. |
