Ethernet rules out Wi-Fi interference, not an unstable network. A YouTube stream can still drop frames because your upload capacity is too low for its bitrate, another device is using bandwidth, the cable or local network link is faulty, or the route to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable. OBS’s dropped-frame indicator flags a network or bitrate problem; it is not a packet-loss measurement. Test upload capacity and stream health first, then change one variable at a time.
First check whether the problem is network-related
OBS distinguishes network-dropped frames from rendering or encoding problems. Its guidance says dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote server is unstable or the configured bitrate cannot be sustained (OBS Project, Stream Connection Troubleshooting). That points toward the network path or bitrate, but it does not tell you a packet-loss percentage.
A poor-looking YouTube stream is not automatically a network failure. YouTube recommends checking the encoder, dashboard errors, CPU load, and a local recording as well as stream health (YouTube Help, Troubleshoot your live stream).
- If the preview or local recording already looks or sounds wrong, investigate sources, encoder settings, and CPU load.
- If the encoder output looks healthy but OBS reports network-dropped frames or YouTube reports delivery trouble, test the outbound connection and bitrate.
Test upload capacity against your stream bitrate
Compare the stream’s outgoing bitrate with upload capacity, not download speed. YouTube notes that outbound bandwidth is often lower than inbound bandwidth and says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth. It recommends keeping 20% upload capacity in reserve; other people and devices sharing the connection can consume that headroom (YouTube Help, Streaming tips).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Before the event, run a representative test stream with similar motion and audio. Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and OBS’s network-dropped-frame status.
- Note the time, upload result, stream bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, and whether other devices or people are uploading. Comparing these details across test runs can help reveal a capacity or timing pattern.
- Compare sustained available upload capacity with the stream’s total bitrate, allowing for YouTube’s recommended 20% spare capacity. A brief speed-test peak does not establish that the connection can sustain a live stream.
- Repeat the check when the problem normally occurs, if possible. A single speed test is only one piece of evidence; monitor the actual stream because the connection to the selected ingest server can behave differently from a generic speed-test route.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing quality that the connection can deliver reliably (YouTube Help, Streaming tips).
Choose a bitrate for your codec and output
There is no single correct bitrate for every stream. YouTube’s recommended rates depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The following are its H.264 recommendations, checked in October 2026; use YouTube’s table for AV1 or H.265 rather than applying these H.264 values to another codec.

| Codec | Resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. Check the current codec-specific table and settings in YouTube Help’s encoder settings before changing output settings.
Reduce demand and retest
- If upload capacity is close to or below the stream’s configured bitrate, lower the bitrate to a level the connection can sustain.
- If that still does not produce a stable stream, reduce resolution or frame rate and choose the corresponding YouTube-recommended bitrate for the codec.
- Retest after each adjustment while watching OBS and YouTube stream health. Changing one setting at a time makes it easier to tell which change helped.
OBS offers dynamic bitrate, which can lower the rate during congestion to manage dropped frames. It is a workaround, not a repair for an unstable connection, and the reduced bitrate can lower video quality (OBS Project, Stream Connection Troubleshooting).

Check the Ethernet link, then the route beyond it
A wired connection removes Wi-Fi radio interference from the local link, but it does not prove that every part of the connection is sound.
- Check that the Ethernet connectors are seated and the computer and network equipment show an active link.
- If available, test with a known-good Ethernet cable and a different router or switch port. These are controlled local checks, not guaranteed fixes; they cannot rule out limited upload capacity or trouble farther along the route.
- Run the upload test again and monitor a representative stream. If symptoms continue, note when they occur and retain relevant encoder logs.
- If outbound-connection tests show problems, contact your ISP. If the issue appears limited to a particular ingest route, provide support with timestamps and encoder logs rather than labeling the cause packet loss without a measurement. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends contacting the ISP when the outbound connection is the problem (YouTube Help).
A spare Cat 6 cable can be useful as a known-good cable for the swap, but replacing a cable will not fix insufficient upload capacity or an upstream network fault. YouTube mentions disconnecting a primary encoder’s Ethernet cable in its specific instructions for testing backup-encoder failover; that is not a general claim that cable replacement resolves dropped frames (YouTube Help, Set up backup encoders).
