A “connection refused” error means the encoder could not establish a connection to the destination it was configured to reach. Start by confirming whether that destination is YouTube or a relay on your VPS, then verify the current YouTube RTMPS URL, port, TLS, and SNI settings. A refusal is not, by itself, proof that YouTube is down, your stream key is invalid, or your VPS provider is blocking a port.
First, identify which connection is failing
A Linux VPS setup can publish in either of two ways. In a direct setup, OBS or FFmpeg connects from the VPS to YouTube. In a relay setup, the encoder first connects to an RTMP server such as NGINX on the VPS, and that server makes a second connection to YouTube. The NGINX RTMP module can support RTMP, HLS, and DASH streaming, but the relay creates two separate network legs to diagnose.
- Direct: encoder on the VPS → YouTube ingest.
- Relay: encoder → VPS relay, then VPS relay → YouTube ingest.
Check the encoder’s configured server URL and any relay configuration. If a relay is involved, note which leg reports the error. A successful encoder-to-relay connection does not establish that the relay can reach YouTube.
Confirm the current YouTube ingest URL and stream key
Open YouTube Live Control Room and copy the server URL and stream key from the settings for the stream you intend to use. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure RTMP transport. The ordinary RTMP URL may be displayed by default, so explicitly select the RTMPS option (shown with a lock) rather than relying on an old URL saved in OBS, FFmpeg, or a relay configuration.

- Use the complete current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, including its application path.
- Use the matching stream key from the same stream settings, and keep it private.
- Do not replace the hostname with a remembered ingest server or assume a self-hosted RTMP server’s default port applies to YouTube.
Check protocol, port, TLS, and SNI together
For YouTube RTMPS, the connection must use the rtmps protocol, a valid YouTube ingestion server and application path, and port 443. RTMPS is RTMP carried through TLS. YouTube also requires the server hostname for authentication using SNI (Server Name Indication). A client that opens a TCP connection but does not complete TLS is not correctly using RTMPS, even if the hostname and port look plausible.
- Read the URL literally. Confirm that its scheme is
rtmpsand that the host and path match the value copied from Live Control Room. - Check the port. YouTube’s RTMPS connection uses port
443; do not substitute a port used by an RTMP service you host yourself. - Check the encoder or relay’s TLS support. Make sure it is configured for RTMPS rather than plain RTMP. A TLS or certificate error points toward the protocol, hostname, port, or TLS setup—not automatically toward the stream key.
- Preserve the hostname for SNI. If you use a custom connection configuration, make sure the TLS client sends the actual YouTube ingest hostname. Connecting by IP address or overriding the hostname can interfere with SNI.
Test outbound reachability from the VPS
Test from the same VPS and, for a relay, from the server process’s network environment if it differs. Substitute the hostname from the current YouTube RTMPS URL; do not copy a hostname from an old configuration. These examples test the network and TLS layers, not whether the stream key or publish request is accepted.

- Check TCP reachability: if
ncis installed, runnc -vz HOSTNAME 443. A successful result indicates that a TCP connection could be opened; it does not prove RTMPS publishing will work. - Check TLS and SNI: if OpenSSL is installed, run
openssl s_client -connect HOSTNAME:443 -servername HOSTNAME. Inspect whether a TLS handshake is established and whether certificate information is returned. The-servernamevalue should be the hostname in the URL. - Compare the result with the encoder’s error. If the diagnostic cannot open TCP, inspect network policy and destination details. If TCP opens but TLS fails, check RTMPS configuration, hostname, SNI, and TLS support in the client.
Command availability and output vary by Linux distribution and installed packages. A successful probe is only a layer-specific check; it does not validate YouTube’s RTMP application path, stream key, or publish handshake.
Inspect both Linux and provider network policy
If the destination and port are correct but a TCP test is refused or times out, inspect outbound rules on the VPS and the provider’s network firewall or egress controls. Check the configured destination and required outbound port, and allow only the flow needed for the connection. In a relay configuration, run this check for the relay-to-YouTube leg as well as the encoder-to-relay leg.

A refusal indicates that a connection attempt was rejected at the destination or by an intermediate service; a timeout means no timely response was received. Neither result alone establishes that a provider blocks YouTube. The error can also arise from a wrong hostname or port, a relay that is not listening, or another network-path issue. Do not open unrelated inbound ports as a reflex: the connection to YouTube is outbound.
Use the symptom to choose the next check
| Symptom | What it tells you | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Connection refused before streaming starts | The configured destination or an intermediate service rejected the connection attempt. This does not identify the cause by itself. | Confirm the destination, port, and whether a relay is present; test outbound reachability and inspect the relevant host and provider network rules. |
| Connection timeout or “failed to connect to server” | The encoder did not establish a connection in time. A wrong URL or missing RTMPS support can cause connection trouble. | Refresh the URL from Live Control Room and check the RTMPS protocol, port, TLS, and SNI. |
| TLS or certificate error | The failure is at or around the TLS handshake, not necessarily at the stream-key stage. | Verify RTMPS rather than plain RTMP, the URL hostname and port, and SNI behavior. |
| Connected, but publishing fails | TCP and possibly TLS setup have progressed; the application path, stream key, or RTMP publish step may still be wrong. | Re-copy the full URL and matching key from the intended stream settings, then check the encoder or relay’s publish configuration. |
| Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections after connecting | This is different from a refusal at initial connection. It can indicate network instability between the encoder and ingest server or a bitrate that the connection cannot sustain. | Check network stability and sustainable bitrate, then monitor YouTube stream health while testing representative audio and motion. |
After connecting, check stream settings and health
Encoder settings matter to stream compatibility and quality after the connection is established; they are not the first explanation for a TCP refusal. YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Test with representative audio and motion and monitor stream health in YouTube rather than judging only by whether the encoder says it connected.

OBS’s guidance associates dropped frames and intermittent disconnections with a network issue between the encoder and the remote ingest server. Those symptoms call for network stability and sustainable-bitrate checks; they should not be treated as equivalent to an initial connection refusal.

- Stale or ordinary RTMP URL: copy the current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and explicitly select the RTMPS option.
- Wrong host, path, or port: compare the full URL against the current stream settings; YouTube RTMPS uses port 443.
- Plain RTMP configured where RTMPS is required: enable the encoder or relay’s TLS/RTMPS mode and verify that TLS actually negotiates.
- SNI missing or using the wrong hostname: preserve the ingest hostname in the TLS connection, especially if the configuration uses an IP address or custom host override.
- Relay is the failing endpoint: distinguish the encoder-to-relay connection from the relay-to-YouTube connection; a healthy first leg does not guarantee the second works.
- Outbound policy or route problem: check the VPS firewall and provider egress controls for the required outbound destination and port rather than assuming a block.
- Unstable link or excessive bitrate after connection: investigate these when there are dropped frames or intermittent disconnects, not as the default explanation for a refused initial connection.
