Yes—Google offers a dedicated YouTube Music app for compatible Chromebooks through the Google Play Store. It is a Progressive Web App (PWA), not a separately engineered native desktop client: it opens YouTube Music in its own app window, without the usual browser tabs and address bar. You can launch it from the Chromebook Launcher and use ChromeOS Quick Settings to control playback.
What Google released for Chromebooks
Google’s dedicated “YouTube Music for Chromebook” Play Store listing appeared on February 9, 2021. It is separate from the ordinary Android listing, but the installed experience is a packaged web app: YouTube Music runs in a dedicated window rather than as a conventional native desktop application. 9to5Google’s February 9, 2021 report describes the release and its PWA format.
That distinction is mostly about how the service is delivered, not whether it feels like an app during everyday use. The dedicated window removes the normal browser address bar and tab strip, and the app is available from the Chromebook Launcher.
What the Play Store listing includes
Google LLC describes the app as “The recommended YouTube Music experience for Chromebook.” The listing, updated August 29, 2023, advertises more than 70 million official songs and features including live performances, covers, remixes, personalized playlists and mixes, collaborative playlists, a personal library, charts, and discovery by genre and mood. Those are listing claims about the YouTube Music service, not evidence that every feature is exclusive to the Chromebook app. The PWA is a dedicated way to access the web-based service.
How to install YouTube Music on a Chromebook
- Open the Chromebook Launcher and search for YouTube Music. If it is already installed, select it to launch.
- If it is not present, open the Google Play Store, search for YouTube Music for Chromebook, and install it. Google’s Chromebook Help instructions also direct users to the Play Store when the app is missing.
- Open YouTube Music from the Launcher and sign in if prompted.
Play Store availability depends on the Chromebook. If the app does not appear or cannot be installed, check whether Google Play is supported and enabled on your particular device using Google’s Chromebook compatibility guidance.

Control playback from ChromeOS Quick Settings
When YouTube Music is playing, open the Chromebook’s Quick Settings panel to access media controls such as pause, play, and skip. Google says these controls work for music played on the web and in music apps, including YouTube Music. Chromebook Help: control music, videos and more.
ChromeOS also supports media controls from the lock screen for supported web and Play Store media apps. Google’s December 17, 2019 ChromeOS update specifically named YouTube Music among services whose playback could be controlled there.

The dedicated app is useful if you want YouTube Music separated from your browser tabs and easy to find in the Launcher. A browser tab is a straightforward alternative if you prefer not to install it. The available product information does not establish a distinct offline-download capability for this Chromebook PWA, so do not assume that installing it adds one.
