There is no single reliable price for leaving a YouTube video looping on a Mac mini M2. Measure the average wall power of your actual setup while the video plays, then calculate watts × hours ÷ 1,000 × your electricity rate per kWh. Apple’s published M2 figures and an independent review offer context, but neither is a measurement of YouTube playback. A cloud comparison also needs a named service and its full costs for an equivalent task.
How to calculate the Mac mini’s electricity cost
Use the average power draw of the complete setup you intend to leave running, measured in watts at the wall. Multiply by operating hours, divide by 1,000 to convert watt-hours to kilowatt-hours, then multiply by your marginal electricity price per kWh.
Energy use: average watts × hours ÷ 1,000 = kWh
Energy cost: kWh × local marginal electricity price = cost
For 30 days of continuous operation, use 720 hours. The result applies only to the equipment included in the reading and the electricity rate you use. If the Mac is connected to a display, speakers, external drives, network equipment, or a UPS, include those devices in a whole-setup measurement or account for them separately.

Measure playback rather than assuming an idle figure
A plug-in electricity usage monitor can show wall draw for a Mac mini and the equipment connected through it. Measure during the intended YouTube playback session, ideally long enough for the reading to represent typical operation. No cited source establishes the average power for your particular video, browser, settings, or peripherals, so use your own reading rather than treating a published idle or load figure as a streaming result.
What published M2 Mac mini power figures tell you
Apple’s power table lists 7 W idle and 50 W CPU maximum for the 2023 Mac mini configuration with M2, 24 GB unified memory, and 2 TB SSD. Apple describes idle as Finder open under default power-management settings; the figures are measured at the wall and include system and power-supply losses. Apple describes CPU maximum as a compute-intensive test. These are reference conditions, not a YouTube playback range. Apple’s Mac mini power-consumption information also includes newer generations, so make sure you are looking at the 2023 M2 row.

As a separate test context, Notebookcheck reports 2.2–2.6 W idle, 28.7 W average load, and 51.5 W maximum load for its 2023 M2 Mac mini review setup. Its average-load result is not a browser or YouTube measurement. Notebookcheck’s review provides an independent example of why power depends on the configuration and test conditions.
How to loop a YouTube video on a Mac
- Open the video’s watch page on YouTube in a desktop browser.
- Right-click inside the video player.
- Choose Loop from the player’s context menu. YouTube documents this method for repeating a single video. See YouTube’s loop instructions.
For a playlist, expand the playlist and use its Loop control. Looping repeats playback, but it does not guarantee that every viewing session continues without interruption.

Continue-watching prompts can interrupt playback
With Autoplay on, YouTube says its “Video paused. Continue watching?” prompt can appear before 60 minutes of uninterrupted watching on web, 30 minutes on mobile, or 180 minutes on TV. These are the timings YouTube gives for the prompt; they do not establish that every manual loop will trigger it or avoid it. See YouTube’s explanation of the continue-watching prompt.
Is a cloud service cheaper than leaving the Mac on?
Not enough information is available to call an unspecified cloud service cheaper. A fair comparison needs the cloud product and region, the required configuration, 24-hour billing, storage and data-transfer charges, taxes where applicable, and confirmation that it can perform the same job with comparable playback behavior. Compare that complete cloud cost with the measured local electricity cost for the same period. If you already own the Mac, its purchase price is not an additional cost of this particular operating decision; include equipment cost only when deciding whether to buy a Mac.

Also distinguish a browser session that plays a YouTube video from a service that keeps a YouTube channel’s own live stream running. They are different tasks, and a cost comparison is meaningful only when both options accomplish the task you need.
