To stop YouTube from choosing a different playback resolution automatically, open the live player’s Settings → Quality and select an available resolution instead of Auto. On Android or iPhone/iPad, choose Advanced when it appears, then select the resolution. The choice is a viewer-side setting for that stream; it does not change the resolution the creator sends to YouTube, and YouTube may not offer every quality on every device or stream.
Set the quality for the live stream you’re watching
- Open the player settings. Select the gear icon in the YouTube player.
- Open Quality. On a computer or TV, choose Quality from the settings menu.
- Choose a specific resolution. Select one of the available options, such as 720p or 1080p, rather than Auto. On mobile, choose Advanced first if YouTube presents it, then select a resolution.
This selects a quality for the current video or stream where the option is available. If the selected resolution is not listed, YouTube is not offering it for that playback setup; you cannot force it from the viewer controls.
What Auto and mobile quality preferences do
YouTube says it changes video quality based on viewing conditions. Auto lets the player choose as conditions change, considering factors such as internet connection speed, player or screen size, source quality, and browser support. A manually selected resolution avoids Auto’s choice when available, but buffering can become more likely if the connection cannot sustain it.

On Android and iOS, YouTube may show Auto, Higher picture quality, Data saver, or Advanced in the quality controls. To set defaults for later viewing, open YouTube’s mobile app settings and find the video-quality preferences for Wi-Fi and mobile networks; labels and exact paths can vary by app version. A default preference is not the same as selecting a fixed resolution for one live stream.

If the resolution keeps dropping or is missing
Check the connection and playback setup
YouTube identifies connection speed, player or screen size, the stream’s source quality, and browser support as factors in playback quality. If quality falls, check whether the connection is fluctuating and whether the device, app or browser is supporting the expected format. A smaller player or screen may also affect the quality YouTube selects automatically. These checks can help identify the cause, but no single change guarantees a particular resolution.
Check whether that resolution is available
The creator’s source quality sets an upper limit on what can be delivered, and device, browser, stream, or format support can limit the listed choices. If the resolution you want is absent from Settings → Quality, try another supported device or browser if practical. The option may still be unavailable for that stream.

Distinguish viewer playback from creator settings
Changing Quality in the player affects what you watch; it does not alter the stream being sent by the creator. YouTube transcodes live streams for different devices and network conditions, so viewers do not necessarily receive one identical rendition even when the creator sends a fixed input resolution.
For creators: choose the stream’s input resolution separately
If you control the broadcast, YouTube’s recommended default is to automatically detect the encoder’s resolution and frame rate. To choose ingestion resolution manually, configure a custom stream key in Live Control Room and use its manual stream-resolution setting. This controls the input to YouTube, not a viewer’s playback selection.

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these recommended ingestion bitrates. They are not minimum internet speeds for viewers and do not guarantee the resolution any individual viewer will receive.

Use the recommendation for the codec and frame rate you actually send, and ensure the encoder’s output matches the chosen stream settings. A creator cannot make every viewer’s player stay at one resolution: viewers’ playback conditions and available formats still differ.

Does YouTube Premium lock live-stream quality?
No. YouTube’s 1080p Premium option is an enhanced-bitrate setting for eligible uploaded videos, not a quality option for live streams. For a live stream, use the resolutions available under the player’s Quality menu.
