If your YouTube live stream freezes, first check whether OBS reports rendering lag, encoding lag, or dropped frames. They point to different problems: reduce GPU and encoding work for the first two; investigate upload stability and bitrate for dropped frames or viewer buffering. There is no one setting that fits every low-end PC, so diagnose the bottleneck and test one change at a time.
What kind of “freeze” are you seeing?
A game that looks smooth on your screen does not prove OBS is keeping up. OBS must composite and render the scene as well as encode it, and those tasks compete with games and other programs for system resources. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide, dated June 12, 2021, specifically notes that OBS needs GPU time and resources to composite and render scenes.
- Rendering lag: OBS cannot render frames quickly enough, often because the GPU is overloaded. Reduce GPU work from the game, OBS scene, or other GPU-heavy applications.
- Encoding lag: OBS cannot encode frames quickly enough. Reduce output demands or try a compatible hardware encoder already available on the PC.
- Dropped frames: OBS is losing frames in transmission. Check the connection and bitrate rather than assuming the CPU or encoder is at fault.
- Viewer buffering: Viewers may see pauses even if the stream appears fine locally. Check OBS’s dropped-frame indicators and connection; buffering is not by itself proof of encoding overload.
OBS explains dropped-frame troubleshooting separately in its Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guidance, dated June 9, 2021. A freeze can involve more than one bottleneck, so inspect the indicators during an actual test rather than changing settings at random.
Diagnose the bottleneck in OBS
- Start a short test using the game, sources, and scene you normally stream. If possible, make it private or unlisted, or otherwise choose a low-risk test. OBS recommends testing before the first live stream in its OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Open View > Stats in OBS and watch the rendering lag, encoding lag, and dropped frames indicators while the problem occurs.
- Save the OBS log for the test. Use the log together with Stats to identify which indicator is rising; do not treat a viewer’s report of freezing as a diagnosis on its own.
- Change one relevant setting, repeat the test, and compare the result. If you change several things at once, it is harder to learn which bottleneck you relieved.
OBS’s System Requirements page, dated August 25, 2021, cautions that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording with OBS. The load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and workload; the PC’s model and a sustained upload measurement are also needed for individualized advice.

Reduce GPU and rendering load first
Free GPU time from the game and other programs
- Lower graphics settings in the game, especially settings that keep the GPU heavily occupied.
- Cap the game’s frame rate around the display refresh rate, or enable V-Sync. An uncapped game can consume GPU capacity OBS needs even when its own frame rate appears fine.
- Close programs you know are GPU-intensive and that you opened for the session. Avoid generic “PC optimizer” tools; they are not a diagnosis or a guaranteed fix.
- On Windows, try launching OBS as administrator. OBS’s performance troubleshooting guide recommends this because Windows can reserve GPU capacity for OBS.
Simplify the OBS scene
- Remove sources that are not needed for the live scene.
- Disable unnecessary filters and reduce browser sources where practical.
- Keep the current base canvas unless the GPU is severely constrained. OBS describes lowering the base canvas as a more disruptive step, so first try reducing output demands and scene complexity.
Lower output resolution or frame rate
In OBS, open Settings > Video and test a lower output resolution, a lower frame rate, or both. Resolution and frame rate both affect the work required to render and encode the stream. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working. Make one adjustment at a time and choose the highest tested setting that remains stable and looks acceptable for your content.
There is no evidence-backed universal resolution or frame rate for all low-end PCs. A talking-head or music stream may remain acceptable at a lower frame rate than fast gameplay, but the right choice depends on what you stream and what the PC sustains.

Choose an encoder the PC actually supports
In Settings > Output, check the available encoder choices. If the PC has a compatible hardware encoder, test it; hardware encoding moves encoding work to a specialized component and is generally recommended by OBS for performance. The available choices may include NVENC, AMD AMF, or Intel Quick Sync, but compatibility depends on the GPU or integrated graphics, encoder generation, and drivers. Do not select one based on its name alone.
| Option | What it can help with | Trade-off or check |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible hardware encoder | Can reduce CPU encoding work by using a specialized hardware component. | Check that the PC and drivers support it. Early hardware encoder generations may deliver lower quality than x264 at the same bitrate. |
| x264 software encoding | Uses CPU resources for encoding and may be an option when a suitable hardware encoder is unavailable. | Whether the CPU can sustain the chosen resolution, frame rate, and scene workload varies; lowering output demands may be necessary. |
OBS’s Hardware Encoding guide, dated January 11, 2022, covers prerequisites and compatibility for NVENC, AMF, Quick Sync, and VideoToolbox. Its Advanced NVENC Options page is specific to NVENC options in version 31.0; do not assume those options apply to other encoders or OBS versions. For a starting configuration, use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, then test with your real scene and workload.

If OBS shows dropped frames or viewers buffer
Check sustained upload stability and compare your stream bitrate with YouTube’s current guidance for your chosen settings. OBS says bitrate depends on both upload speed and the streaming service; lower bitrate can also be appropriate for viewer compatibility. This evidence does not establish one current YouTube bitrate or ingest setting for every stream, so do not copy a number without checking YouTube’s latest recommendations and measuring the connection.
A connection problem is not evidence that the PC needs a new CPU or GPU. Conversely, a stable connection will not resolve rendering or encoding lag. Diagnose the relevant indicator before spending money or changing unrelated settings.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | First useful changes |
|---|---|---|
| Rendering lag rises while the game runs | GPU pressure from the game, OBS scene, or another GPU-heavy program. | Cap game FPS or enable V-Sync, lower game graphics, simplify the scene, and try OBS as administrator on Windows. |
| Encoding lag rises | Encoder workload exceeds what the PC can sustain. | Lower output resolution or frame rate; test 30 fps if 60 fps is unstable; try a compatible hardware encoder. |
| Dropped frames rise or viewers report buffering | Connection stability or bitrate may be the issue. | Measure sustained upload, check bitrate against YouTube’s current guidance, and use OBS’s stream-connection troubleshooting steps. |
| Stats appear fine, but viewers still report pauses | The symptom may be viewer-side buffering or another factor not identified by the visible counters. | Compare reports from different viewers, inspect the OBS log and connection indicators, and test again before attributing it to encoding. |
| The game looks smooth but OBS cannot keep up | OBS still needs GPU time for composition and rendering; game frame rate alone is not a reliable health check. | Check Stats, cap the game frame rate, reduce graphics or scene load, and lower output demands as indicated. |
Do you need to upgrade the PC?
Not until the symptom is identified and free settings have been tested. A new GPU, capture card, replacement part, or network cable is only relevant if the diagnosed fault and system support show it addresses the problem. OBS system compatibility does not guarantee that a particular workload can be streamed, and the available evidence cannot prescribe a universal encoder, preset, or bitrate for a low-end PC in India.
For help tailoring settings, gather the CPU and GPU model, OBS version, OBS log, output resolution and frame rate, selected encoder, and a sustained upload result. Those details make it possible to distinguish machine limits from connection trouble.
