FFmpeg can run on a separate computer that mounts the NAS share, or on the NAS itself if its operating system, hardware, and FFmpeg installation support the job.
Choose where FFmpeg will run
A NAS is a storage location; it does not have to be the streaming computer. Decide which of these setups fits your device before configuring the stream.
| Setup | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg on another computer | The computer mounts or otherwise accesses the NAS share, reads the video, and sends the stream to YouTube. | Confirm the computer can reliably access the file and sustain the selected encoding workload and upload bitrate. The computer and its network connection must remain available while streaming. |
| FFmpeg on the NAS | FFmpeg reads the video from local NAS storage and sends the stream directly to YouTube. | Confirm that the NAS operating system supports an FFmpeg package or container, that the installed build has the needed encoders, and that its CPU can encode the chosen output. Check how the NAS keeps a process running and restarts it if it stops. |
There is no universal NAS installation command: the model, operating system, processor, and package or container support determine the correct steps. If you want device-specific instructions, identify the NAS model and OS first.
Get the YouTube stream URL and protect the key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- In Stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS; to reveal its RTMPS URL, select the lock icon in the URL field.
- Keep the key private. YouTube treats it like a password: do not publish it in a command, screenshot, log, or shell history. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg with the replacement.
Use the actual URL and key supplied by YouTube; the placeholders in the command below are not usable credentials.

Prepare and run the FFmpeg loop
Make sure the machine running FFmpeg can read the media path. For a mounted NAS share, use the path as it appears on that machine; if FFmpeg runs on the NAS, use the NAS-local path. The video must remain accessible for the duration of the stream.
The basic command shape is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/video.mp4"
-f flv "[YouTube RTMP(S) ingest URL]/[stream key]"
Replace the bracketed parts with valid settings for your media and YouTube stream. The command deliberately leaves mapping and encoding unspecified: a suitable configuration depends on the input, selected output codec, resolution, frame rate, and installed FFmpeg build. Check the documentation or help for the version installed on your machine; FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly, and current-trunk options may differ from an older NAS package.

What the input options do
-stream_loop -1tells FFmpeg to loop the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so place it before the relevant-i. FFmpeg documents-stream_loop 0as no looping.-rereads a file input at its native frame rate. It is useful for pacing file input when sending a live stream; it does not make the NAS, encoder process, network, or YouTube event reliable by itself.-iidentifies the source file. Put input-scoped options before it so they apply to that input.-f flvselects the output container used in this command shape for the YouTube RTMP(S) destination. Use the ingest URL and key exactly as provided in Live Control Room.
Set encoding quality for YouTube and your connection
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; CBR; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so do not treat a single bitrate as suitable for every stream.
For one specific example, YouTube Help’s “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” page, accessed 2026-10-03, lists H.264 1080p at 30 fps as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings table for the combination you plan to use, then choose a rate your upload connection can sustain continuously.

- Use an output resolution and frame rate appropriate to the source and the encoder hardware.
- Set constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds, in the encoding configuration.
- Test with audio and movement similar to the actual programme; still images or silent tests do not represent the full workload.
- Check that the NAS path stays mounted and readable and that the upload link has enough sustained capacity for the chosen bitrate.
Start, verify, and end the stream
- Start FFmpeg with the completed command and watch for errors indicating a missing file, inaccessible share, unsupported codec, or rejected YouTube connection.
- Wait for the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Review the picture and sound, and check stream health before taking the event live.
- Use Live Control Room to go live where the selected workflow requires it, then keep monitoring the encoder and stream health.
- To stop, stop FFmpeg from sending the feed and end the stream in Live Control Room.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, according to its “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder” guide, accessed 2026-10-03. An infinite FFmpeg input loop only repeats the media. It does not establish that the encoder, connection, YouTube event, or archive will operate indefinitely.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot open the input | The path is wrong, the NAS share is not mounted, or the running account lacks permission. | Check the exact path from the machine and account running FFmpeg. Confirm the share is mounted and the file can be read before starting the stream. |
| The loop does not repeat | -stream_loop -1 is missing or placed after the input it should affect. |
Put -stream_loop -1 before the corresponding -i. |
| Playback runs too fast or arrives unevenly | File input is not being paced for live output, or the system/network cannot sustain the job. | Use -re before the input and check CPU load, NAS access, and sustained upload capacity. Pacing alone cannot fix an overloaded encoder or unstable connection. |
| YouTube does not receive the feed | The ingest URL or key is incorrect, the key was reset, or the output configuration is unsupported. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, use its RTMPS URL where available, and verify the selected codec and output configuration against YouTube’s current settings guidance. |
| Video or audio quality is poor, or stream health degrades | Bitrate, codec, keyframe interval, or upload capacity is mismatched. | Check the YouTube settings for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate; use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds); lower the bitrate or output demand if the connection cannot sustain it. |
| The stream stops after running for a while | The FFmpeg process exited, the share or network disconnected, the NAS or host stopped the task, or YouTube lost the feed. | Inspect FFmpeg output and host or NAS task logs, restore file and network access, and restart the feed. For unattended operation, configure process supervision and restart behavior appropriate to the specific NAS or host; infinite input looping is not process supervision. |
| The stream key may have been exposed | The key appeared in a public command, screenshot, log, or history. | Reset the key in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder configuration. Avoid publishing the new key in examples or logs. |
