Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a YouTube Live stream at 4K and 60 fps, set OBS’s streaming keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. The interval is the same for 4K60 as for other supported live resolutions and frame rates.
What keyframe interval should I use for YouTube 4K 60fps in OBS?
Use 2 seconds. YouTube’s live encoder guidance states: “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.” The recommendation applies to keyframe timing; 4K resolution and 60 fps do not require a different interval. YouTube’s live encoder settings guide does not display a publication year for this recommendation.
A keyframe interval controls how often the encoder produces a keyframe, also called an I-frame. Set the interval to two seconds rather than four when OBS exposes the setting. Do not confuse this with frame rate: 60 fps describes how many frames are sent per second, while the keyframe interval is measured in seconds.
How to set a 2-second keyframe interval in OBS
- Open OBS output settings. Go to Settings → Output. If the streaming controls you need are not visible, change Output Mode to Advanced.
- Find the streaming encoder controls. In the Streaming section, locate Keyframe Interval. The exact controls can vary by OBS version and selected encoder; not every encoder exposes an identical field.
- Enter 2 seconds. Set the interval to 2 (seconds), if the control is available, and apply the settings.
- Check the rest of the output configuration. Confirm that the selected codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate and encoder can handle the stream you intend to send.
OBS’s advanced encoder guide shows a keyframe interval of 2 in example encoder configurations, including NVENC and x264. That page covers recording examples; it should not be treated as a YouTube-specific streaming preset. If a selected OBS encoder does not offer the interval control, check its documentation and available settings rather than assuming that another encoder’s controls will match.

Choose a 4K60 bitrate and codec
YouTube lists different live-ingest bitrate recommendations for 4K60 depending on the codec. These are YouTube’s recommended settings and minimums for ingest, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection will deliver a clean stream.
| Codec | YouTube’s 4K60 recommended bitrate | YouTube’s 4K60 minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
These figures come from YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance; the page does not state a publication year for the figures. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS settings list H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, support up to 60 fps, and specify CBR encoding. YouTube recommends RTMPS.

Use the recommendation for the codec you have selected, then verify that your upload connection can sustain the stream while allowing capacity for other network use. A speed-test result is a useful check, but actual stability should be judged by testing the stream and watching YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
Set 4K resolution and 60 fps only if the full setup can sustain them
In OBS, output resolution and frame rate are configured under Settings → Video. Set the output to 3840×2160 and 60 fps only if your source, encoder and connection can support the workload. OBS describes these as configurable video settings in its overview guide.

Hardware encoding can shift encoding work away from the CPU, depending on the supported encoder and system. It is an option, not a requirement to change the keyframe interval or to stream at 4K60. See OBS’s hardware encoding guide for context on encoder choices.
Configure YouTube ingest and latency expectations
YouTube automatically detects encoder settings by default. A custom stream key lets you manually select a resolution in Live Control Room, but manual selection is not required for every stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder streaming. Its guidance also notes that 4K/2160p streams use normal latency; the low-latency optimization option is not available for them.

A capture card may be useful if your setup brings video from an external camera or console into OBS. It is not needed to set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube describes encoder streaming as useful for setups involving external video hardware.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the stream before going live
- Check upload capacity. Run an upload speed test and confirm there is stable capacity for the chosen bitrate plus other network traffic.
- Make a representative test. Before the real event, test with audio and video that resemble the planned stream, including similar movement. A static test image alone may not represent the workload of moving footage.
- Watch stream health. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health feedback during the test and while live. If the stream is unstable, investigate the connection and encoder workload rather than simply changing the keyframe interval away from YouTube’s recommendation.
YouTube recommends testing before a live event and monitoring stream health; OBS likewise recommends testing settings before a real stream. See the relevant guidance in YouTube Help and the OBS Studio overview guide.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 keyframe and stream problems
- You cannot find Keyframe Interval: Check Settings → Output and switch to Advanced output mode if needed. The available fields depend on OBS’s selected encoder and version. If the selected encoder does not expose the control, consult that encoder’s documentation.
- The interval is set to 4 seconds: Change it to 2 seconds where the streaming encoder provides the setting. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4.
- The stream drops frames or reports poor health: Check whether the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate, run an upload speed test, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Also check whether the source and encoder can sustain 3840×2160 at 60 fps.
- You are unsure which bitrate to enter: Use YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec: 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 4K60. The minimum figures are lower, but minimum ingest values are not the same as recommended settings.
- You expect low latency at 4K: YouTube sets 4K/2160p streams to normal latency; its low-latency optimization is not available for that resolution.
- You are considering a capture card just for this setting: A capture card is not necessary to change the keyframe interval. Consider one only if your workflow needs to bring external video hardware into OBS.
