For YouTube on a Mac, the dependable official option is to watch at youtube.com in a web browser. The official YouTube App Store listing describes the mobile experience; it does not establish a dedicated macOS desktop app. If you mean downloading videos for offline viewing, YouTube offers that separately to eligible Premium members in supported browsers—not simply by installing an app or shortcut.
Is there an official YouTube app for Mac?
The official YouTube listing in Apple’s App Store describes YouTube’s mobile app, but it does not establish a dedicated desktop app for macOS. For ordinary viewing, open a browser and go to youtube.com.
Apple says Mac apps are available through the Mac App Store or directly from developers. Finding an app through either route does not, by itself, make it an official Google or YouTube app. Check who publishes any separate YouTube client before installing it.

How to watch YouTube in a browser on your Mac
- Open a web browser and visit
youtube.com. - Sign in if you want to use your account, subscriptions, or other account-linked features.
- If you specifically want to use Chrome and do not already have it, first check that your Mac runs macOS 13 Ventura or later. Google’s current installation instructions are to download the Mac installer, open
googlechrome.dmg, and drag Chrome to Applications.
You do not need to install Chrome just to watch YouTube; it is one browser option. Google’s stated macOS minimum can change as Chrome support evolves.

Can you install YouTube as a separate Mac app?
A browser’s website-app or shortcut feature may give YouTube its own window or an easier-to-open icon, if your browser version provides that option. It does not turn the website into an official standalone YouTube app, and it does not add offline downloads. Browser controls change over time, so use the current help for your specific browser rather than assuming a particular menu path.
A third-party client is another option if you prefer a dedicated interface. Tubo’s developer advertises multi-tab browsing, picture-in-picture, keyboard shortcuts, session persistence, and media keys, and states that the app supports macOS 13 Ventura and later. The developer also says, “Tubo is not affiliated with YouTube or Google.” Treat its feature and compatibility descriptions as vendor-provided information; they are not independent verification of performance, privacy, or suitability for every Mac or account.

Before installing any app from a developer’s website, check the publisher, system requirements, update history, privacy information, and that you are using the developer’s genuine download source. Apple describes the Mac App Store as an easy starting point and says its apps are reviewed by Apple and updated automatically. For apps downloaded from the web, Apple describes opening a downloaded .dmg or .pkg and following the installer steps; macOS may prompt you before opening an app. Apple advises against opening an app if you do not trust its source.

YouTube documents computer downloads as a YouTube Premium feature for supported browsers. A download is not a permanent video file saved to Finder: YouTube makes eligible videos available in its own Downloads area for offline playback, subject to reconnection and availability checks.

- Sign in to
youtube.comwith a YouTube Premium account. Premium availability varies by location. - Open an eligible video’s watch page and click Download.
- To find downloaded videos, open Downloads in YouTube.
Not every video is necessarily eligible, and the feature depends on Premium availability in your region. YouTube says computer downloads can normally be played offline for up to 29 days before the device must reconnect. In some countries or regions, the offline period may be 48 hours. On reconnection, YouTube checks whether the video is still available; if it is not, it may be removed at the next sync.

YouTube describes Premium as a paid membership that removes many ads shown before and during videos, though creator promotions may still appear. Its benefits are not identical across platforms: YouTube’s support information describes background play as a mobile-app benefit. Do not assume that every feature associated with the mobile YouTube app works the same way in a Mac browser.
