A freeze when a playlist returns to a large video file does not, by itself, prove the file is too large or that YouTube is at fault. First find where the picture freezes: in the source or local playback, in the encoder preview or archive, or only on YouTube. That comparison separates media and system problems from upload and ingest problems—and helps you test the actual repeat boundary before relying on the stream.
Find where the freeze starts
At the next occurrence, record the time and compare the same moment in the source, encoder output, local archive, and YouTube playback. YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality and checking the integrity of the local archive. Look at the Live Control Room health indicator and timestamped errors, and confirm whether the archive is still growing and whether it freezes too. YouTube: monitor live-stream quality · YouTube: check live-stream errors
- The file or local player freezes: inspect the file’s playback through the end and restart, and check the source setup.
- OBS preview or the local archive freezes: investigate the source, scene complexity, media decoding, and system workload.
- Local output stays smooth but YouTube freezes: check encoder health, outbound upload, and YouTube ingest messages.
This comparison narrows the possibilities; it does not establish a cause without details such as the source type, file format, OBS and operating-system versions, machine load, and logs. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load, reviewing the local archive, and testing the outbound connection. YouTube: troubleshoot live-stream issues

In OBS, identify whether the video is a Media Source or part of a VLC Video playlist. Their loop controls are different, so verify the setting for the source type you actually use. OBS documents a per-file Loop option for Media Source and a Loop Playlist option for VLC Video; VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. OBS: Media Sources

- Play the large file in a local player through its ending, then let it restart. Note whether playback itself stalls or fails at the boundary.
- In OBS, inspect the source properties and confirm the intended loop option is enabled for that source type.
- For a playlist, test whether the freeze follows the specific file or happens at the playlist transition regardless of which file is next.
- Preserve your current settings before changing them so you can restore the original configuration.
Test whether the file or scene is overloading the system
High-resolution media and complex scenes can demand more system resources. OBS recommends reducing resource demands when performance is a problem, including testing lower-resolution media. This is a diagnostic step, not proof that every large file causes a freeze. OBS: encoding performance troubleshooting
- At the repeat boundary, note CPU load and any encoder warnings alongside the OBS preview and archive.
- Temporarily simplify the scene, then repeat the test without changing other variables.
- If needed, test a lower-resolution copy of the same video. If the symptom changes, that points toward a workload or media-processing issue, but does not identify the exact cause.
- OBS Media Source has a hardware-decoding option. It is not a universal fix: if practical, compare its current state with the opposite setting, changing only that option and keeping a record of the result.
If local output is healthy, check upload and YouTube ingest
When the encoder preview and local archive remain healthy but viewers see a freeze, focus on outbound delivery and ingest rather than assuming the video file is faulty. Check YouTube Live Control Room health messages at the recorded time, look for encoder errors, and test the outbound connection. YouTube identifies outbound internet as a possible cause when encoder output appears healthy. YouTube: troubleshoot live-stream issues

Also confirm that your encoder settings suit the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and available upload capacity. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose the applicable recommendation rather than treating one bitrate as universal. Run a test that crosses the failure point
A short test that ends before the playlist returns to the large file cannot establish whether the repeat-boundary problem is fixed. Use representative content and leave enough time for at least one complete playlist cycle.

- Monitor the OBS preview and YouTube Live Control Room during the large file and through the playlist transition.
- Check the local archive afterward: confirm it grew throughout the test and inspect the moment of the repeat.
- Change one variable at a time—source loop setting, scene complexity, media resolution, hardware decoding, or network conditions—and repeat the same test.
For changing YouTube encoder guidance, consult the current live-stream quality guidance and YouTube live-streaming requirements before a production test.
Common symptoms and what to try
| What you observe | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The local file stalls or will not restart | File playback or local player | Play through the end and restart outside OBS; check whether the issue follows that file. |
| OBS preview and archive freeze at the boundary | Source loop behavior, media decoding, or system workload | Verify the source-specific loop option; simplify the scene or test a lower-resolution copy. |
| OBS preview looks normal, but the archive freezes | Encoder output or system performance | Review encoder errors and CPU load, then compare a controlled test with fewer scene demands. |
| Preview and archive are healthy, but YouTube playback freezes | Outbound connection or YouTube ingest | Review Live Control Room health messages and test the outbound connection. |
| The issue appears only on playlist return | Transition or repeat behavior; cause not established by timing alone | Confirm the source type and loop configuration, then test a full cycle while monitoring local and YouTube output. |
Should you buy new hardware or convert the video?
Not on the symptom alone. A repeat-boundary freeze could originate in local playback, resource pressure, encoder output, or outbound delivery. Until the comparisons above identify the failing stage, buying an SSD, encoder, or other hardware—or converting the video—is not a confirmed remedy.
