Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Windows lets you set a maximum Recycle Bin size for each drive separately. That means the limit for C: can differ from the limit for another volume; it is not one shared storage allowance for the whole PC. To check or change a drive’s limit, open Recycle Bin Properties, select that drive, and edit its Custom size. The exact controls can vary by Windows version and drive type.
Why does the Recycle Bin have a different size on each drive?
The Recycle Bin’s maximum capacity is configured by volume. Microsoft’s policy documentation describes the control as a percentage of a volume’s disk space and says it applies to all volumes. Windows’ consumer settings let you select a drive and set that location’s maximum size, so two drives can have different limits.
This maximum is the amount of space Windows may use for Recycle Bin contents on the selected drive. It is not the drive’s total free space, nor a combined allowance shared across all drives. Microsoft does not establish one universal default percentage for every Windows build or device, so there is no single default figure to assume.
How to check or change the limit for a drive
-
Open the desktop Recycle Bin and choose Properties.

Capacity, automatic cleanup, and bypassing the Recycle Bin are different controls
| Control | What it answers | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum capacity | How much space Recycle Bin contents may use on a selected volume | Recycle Bin Properties; select a drive and set its maximum size |
| Timed cleanup | How long eligible items remain before automatic deletion | Storage Sense’s Recycle Bin age setting |
| Deletion path | Whether a deleted item enters the Recycle Bin at all | Some deletions bypass the bin, including Shift+Delete and deletions from network resources |
Changing the capacity does not change how long files are retained. For age-based cleanup, Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance describes the setting Delete files in my recycle bin if they have been there for over. With default settings, Storage Sense runs when the device is low on disk space and deletes Recycle Bin contents after some time. Storage Sense works on the system drive; Microsoft directs users to Advanced storage settings to manage other drives.
Some deleted items do not enter the Recycle Bin. Microsoft says deletions from non-local resources, such as a network computer, bypass it, as does using Shift+Delete. A larger capacity limit does not protect against these deletion paths. See Microsoft’s guidance on bypassing the Recycle Bin.

How to free space or try recovering a deleted file
If the Recycle Bin is using space you need, emptying it removes its contents and frees that space. Microsoft’s Windows storage guidance covers emptying the bin and other ways to free drive space.
If a locally deleted file is no longer in the bin, Windows File Recovery may be able to attempt recovery, but success is not guaranteed. Microsoft advises minimizing use of the computer to improve the chances of recovery. Files deleted with Shift+Delete cannot be undeleted through the Recycle Bin.
