Before buying anything, try your TV’s built-in speech or dialogue setting. If music and sound effects still drown out voices, test a volume-leveling or reduced-loud-sounds option on the TV or streaming device that is actually playing the audio. Menu names vary, so change one setting at a time and compare the same scene at a comfortable volume.
First, find out which device controls the sound
Audio may come from the TV’s own speakers, a soundbar or receiver, or a streaming box. The useful setting may be on the device producing the sound rather than on the TV. Some television controls can also be unavailable when an external speaker output is selected; Samsung, for example, notes that certain settings may be greyed out with external speakers (Samsung support).
Open the active device’s Sound or Audio settings. If a speech-focused setting is listed, try it with a scene where dialogue is hard to make out. Names differ by manufacturer and model; the examples below are not guaranteed to appear on every device.
Try a dialogue or voice setting
These modes aim to make speech more prominent, but they can affect the sound mix differently. Compare the result with the setting off, using the same passage rather than relying on memory.

| Device or platform | Settings documented by its support material | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| LG TV | Clear Voice or Clear Voice Pro | LG lists Settings > All Settings > Sound > Select Mode > Clear Voice Pro for 2021-and-later TVs running webOS 6 or later. For 2020-and-earlier webOS versions, it lists Sound Mode > Clear Voice. Content and menus can vary by model. (LG support) |
| Samsung TV | Amplify | Samsung says Amplify raises mid and high tones and can help when voices are difficult to understand. Its guide describes Standard as balanced and Optimized as emphasizing effects and spaciousness. (Samsung support) |
| Sony TV | Dialog sound mode, Voice Zoom, or Dialog enhancer | Availability and displayed settings depend on model, country or region, settings, and connected device. (Sony support) |
| TCL Google TV | Speech mode; Enhanced Dialog on supported 2024 models | TCL’s Enhanced Dialog guide lists off, low, medium, and high. Its Google TV guide also lists Night mode, equalizer, center speaker volume, and TV Placement among possible controls; availability depends on setup. (TCL Enhanced Dialog; TCL Google TV audio settings) |
| Compatible Roku TV | Dialog Enhancement or Speech Clarity | Roku says dialog enhancement boosts speech relative to background content. Feature names and settings routes vary by system. (Roku support) |
| Apple TV 4K | Enhance Dialogue or Enhance More | These options are conditional on playback, model, and speakers or headphones. Apple says Enhance More may alter the original audio mix. (Apple support) |
If a setting offers levels, begin with low or medium and increase only if speech remains difficult to hear. More processing is not automatically clearer: for example, Apple notes that Enhance More may change the original mix. The right level is the one that improves speech for you without making the rest of the program unpleasant.
When voices disappear under loud music or effects
If dialogue is acceptable in quiet scenes but gets buried when action or music gets loud, test a control that narrows volume differences. Depending on the device, it may be called Auto Volume, Night mode, or Reduce Loud Sounds. These features work differently from a speech mode: they address level swings rather than simply raising the prominence of voices. They may help, but no one control is guaranteed to suit every program or setup.

- Samsung Auto Volume: listed in Expert Settings in Samsung’s support guide (Samsung support).

- TCL Google TV Night mode: listed among possible audio controls; the available options depend on the TV and its configuration (TCL support).
Make a fair comparison without losing track of changes
- Choose a short scene with both dialogue and louder sounds, and set the volume to a comfortable level.
- Turn on one speech-focused mode, replay the same passage, and decide whether voices are easier to understand.
- If the problem is still the gap between quiet conversation and loud effects, leave the best speech setting in place and test one volume-leveling or reduced-loud-sounds option.
- Adjust the offered level gradually. If voices become unnatural, the mix worsens, or loudness changes are less comfortable, return to the previous setting.
- Check that you are changing settings on the active audio device; a connected speaker or playback device may have its own controls.
There is no universal menu path because models, software versions, regions, inputs, and speaker setups differ. Use the exact model’s support instructions if a named control is missing. TCL Support puts the subjective nature of its Enhanced Dialog setting plainly: “Audio is subjective and each user will have to test this setting to find their ‘sweet spot’” (TCL support).

Try another channel, show, or input. If only one program or channel has muffled dialogue or an imbalanced mix, the issue may be in that content or signal rather than in the TV’s general settings. LG notes that program mixing and immersive sound modes can contribute to dialogue being harder to hear (LG support).
