Your router’s guest network can do more than give visitors Wi-Fi. It can put selected smart-home devices, temporary devices, children’s devices or connected TVs on a separate network that may limit their access to the computers, printers and storage on your main home network. How much separation it provides depends on your router, its operating mode and its settings.
What a guest network actually does
A guest network is a separate Wi-Fi access option managed by your router or mesh system. Depending on the equipment and configuration, devices on it may be able to reach the internet without being able to reach the trusted home network—or each other. Those are separate behaviors: limiting access to the main network is not the same as isolating guest devices from one another.
For example, TP-Link says Deco systems in Router mode automatically isolate the guest and main networks. In Access Point (AP) mode, the guest network’s “Allow Local Access” setting determines whether it can reach local resources. Check the instructions for your exact model and mode rather than assuming every guest network works the same way. TP-Link’s Deco guest network guidance explains the distinction.
Four ways to use guest Wi-Fi without guests
1. Separate selected smart-home devices
Some smart-home products may have weaker security than phones, tablets and computers. NETGEAR recommends putting guests or IoT devices on a separate network rather than connecting them to the main one. A guest network can help limit a device’s access to other local equipment, but it is a risk-reduction measure—not a guarantee that a device is safe or that every guest network is suitable for it. NETGEAR’s guest Wi-Fi guidance discusses the recommendation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Before moving a device, check whether it needs to communicate locally with a hub, your phone or other smart devices. If it stops responding afterward, the network’s local-access or isolation settings may be blocking that connection. Some routers offer a dedicated IoT network instead; ASUS, for instance, documents an IoT Network feature for separately managing smart-home devices. ASUS’s IoT Network support page describes its implementation.
2. Keep temporary or less-trusted devices off your main Wi-Fi
A guest network can give an internet connection to devices you do not want on your usual home network, without sharing your main Wi-Fi credentials. That may include a visitor’s device, a temporary device or a non-essential connected gadget. The Australian Cyber Security Centre recommends guest Wi-Fi for visitors and untrusted devices. Its home-router security advice covers guest access.

Isolation between guest devices is common, but not universal. Microsoft notes that some guest networks allow users to specify devices that can be shared. If keeping devices separate from one another matters, verify that your router supports client isolation and that it is enabled. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi guidance notes that guest-network behavior can vary.
3. Set a simple access limit for household devices
If your router lets you turn guest Wi-Fi on and off or set how long it stays active, you can use it for children’s or other household devices when a basic access limit is enough. TP-Link’s Deco guest-network controls, for example, include selectable activation durations. Check TP-Link’s instructions for the relevant Deco controls.

This is a blunt shared control, not a full parental-control system: switching off the guest network affects every device assigned to it. Available schedules and controls vary by router, and a device may be able to reconnect through another saved network. Use this approach only when its limits fit your household’s needs.
4. Keep a connected TV or appliance away from local devices
A connected TV or appliance may need internet access without needing to reach your computers, printers or network storage. Putting it on guest Wi-Fi may limit that local access, depending on the router’s settings. This is a local-network separation measure; it does not establish that the TV maker cannot collect viewing or usage data over the internet.

Also check whether the TV needs to communicate with your phone, a streaming device or another local component. Isolation can break those features even while internet streaming continues.

- Open your router’s manual or app. Find the settings for guest-network access to local resources, guest-device isolation and any duration controls. Labels and behavior vary by manufacturer.
- Check the device’s local connections. Identify whether it needs a phone, hub, printer, storage device or another gadget on the home network.
- Connect it to the guest network and test it. Confirm that its internet-dependent functions and any necessary local controls still work.
- Review the isolation settings if something fails. If the device no longer responds to a phone or hub, local-network isolation may be the cause. Adjust local access only if you understand which devices will become reachable.
Access-point or client isolation can prevent devices on the same Wi-Fi from reaching each other, which may break printing or streaming between devices. ASUS’s AP isolation guidance describes this kind of limitation. A guest network also does not replace router firmware updates, strong Wi-Fi security, or account and device protections. These network boundaries do not by themselves prevent internet-based tracking or manufacturer data collection.

What to compare if you are choosing a router
If your current router lacks the controls you need, compare the features for the exact model and operating mode—not just whether its product page says it has guest Wi-Fi.
- Can guest devices reach the main home network?
- Can guest devices communicate with one another?
- Can access to local resources be enabled selectively?
- Is there a separate IoT network?
- Can you control how long the guest network remains active, or manage its bandwidth?
Choose controls that match the devices you plan to connect. A network that blocks all local access may provide a clearer boundary, but it can also disrupt features that depend on local communication.
