If your phone loses much more charge overnight than it usually does, check its battery-usage screen before changing settings. Look for background app or system activity, weak cellular coverage, a recent setup or update, heat, and battery-health warnings. There is no single overnight-loss percentage that applies to every phone, so compare your own nights and investigate a sharp, repeatable change.
Start with battery usage while the phone was idle
Check which apps or system tasks used power during the hours the screen was off. Background activity can include directions, music, photo syncing, and mail fetching; notifications may also contribute. A long period of background activity can help explain why usage differs from other days, according to Apple’s iPhone battery usage guide.
Review the entries first rather than force-quitting every app. If one app stands out repeatedly, check its background-use settings or update it. Menu names and available controls differ across Android manufacturers and software versions.
On iPhone
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Review the Daily Usage chart and the detailed battery-use list for the affected period.
- Look for entries such as Background Activity, No Mobile Coverage and Low Signal, or Notifications.
Apple says its Daily Usage view compares the current day with recent use and can show leading apps and system activity. The details can help distinguish an app working in the background from poor signal or another cause.

On Android and Pixel
On Pixel, open Settings > Battery > Battery usage, then review use by app and adjust background use for an app that is consistently high. On other Android phones, look in Settings for Battery or Battery usage; exact labels vary by maker and version. Google’s Android battery guide also recommends reviewing high-use apps and available battery controls.
Check whether weak cellular coverage kept the phone working
A phone in a low-signal area may use more power trying to stay connected. On iPhone, the battery-use details can identify “No Mobile Coverage and Low Signal.” Apple recommends using a strong signal when possible and says Wi-Fi uses less battery than mobile networks. On supported iPhones, 5G Auto can switch to LTE when 5G would not noticeably improve the experience; see Apple’s fast-drain troubleshooting guidance.

Airplane Mode can be a useful short test if you do not need to be reachable overnight, but it disables cellular connections and may prevent calls, messages, and mobile data. If you need connectivity, try a location with better reception or Wi-Fi instead. Google’s Android battery guidance also recommends checking connectivity settings.
Allow time after setup, reset, or an update
Extra drain may be temporary after setting up a phone, restoring it, or installing an operating-system update, as apps and software finish downloading, syncing, and optimizing. Apple advises checking battery life again after a few days if the change followed an update. Google says Pixel optimization after setup or a factory reset can take a few weeks to take full effect; after an update, some extra drain can occur during downloads and optimization. If unusual drain continues after a few days following an update, Google’s Pixel troubleshooting guidance recommends getting help.

Check temperature and battery health
Keep a hot phone cool
Heat can accelerate drain even while the phone is idle. Google Android Help states, “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use.” Move a warm phone away from direct sun or other heat sources and let it return to a normal temperature before judging its overnight performance. Avoid covering a phone or leaving it somewhere hot.
Look for battery wear or a service warning
Rechargeable batteries lose capacity as they chemically age, so an older battery may not last as long as it once did. On iPhone, the battery-health menu depends on model: iPhone 15 and later use Settings > Battery > Battery Health; iPhone 14 and earlier use Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Available details can include maximum capacity and, on iPhone 15 models or later, cycle count, manufacture date, and first-use date. Apple’s user guide explains those readings.

Android battery-health information and diagnostics vary by device. Pixel diagnostics are available on Pixel 6 and later, according to Google’s Pixel battery-drain guidance. If the phone reports a service need or battery trouble persists, follow the manufacturer’s service route. Apple says iPhone battery service should be performed by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider; see Apple’s battery maintenance information.

If usage points to background activity, you can restrict the specific app rather than applying broad limits. Android’s Battery Saver and app optimization features may limit background activity, network connections, or other functions. On Pixel, Adaptive Battery can reduce performance and delay notifications, as explained in Google’s Adaptive Battery guidance. Consider those effects if you rely on timely alerts or background syncing.

For an ongoing Android drain problem, Google’s general guidance also suggests restarting the phone and checking for system and app updates. On iPhone, use the battery-use details to identify the relevant app or system activity before making changes.

When to keep investigating
- Compare several nights under similar conditions rather than treating one percentage as a universal pass-or-fail test.
- If the change began after setup or an update, allow the documented optimization period and check again.
- If the drain is a sharp, repeatable change, use the battery-usage screen to identify activity, then check signal, heat, and battery health.
- If a service warning appears or the drain persists despite those checks, contact the phone maker or an authorized service provider.
