For less common tools—such as a cursor spotlight or a way to jump across a large desktop—Microsoft PowerToys is an optional download, separate from Windows Settings.
Start with Windows 11’s Mouse settings
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse. This page contains the most useful everyday controls: pointer speed, pointer precision, wheel behavior, and scrolling inactive windows. Names and placement can vary in later Windows releases.
Make scrolling behave the way you want
Under the scrolling options, choose whether the wheel moves multiple lines at a time or one screen, set the number of lines per wheel notch, and choose whether a downward wheel movement scrolls down or up. You can also turn on scrolling for inactive windows when you hover over them, so you do not have to click a window just to scroll its contents.
If your mouse supports horizontal scrolling, open Additional mouse settings > Wheel to configure how many characters a left or right wheel tilt moves. This option depends on compatible hardware; it will not add tilt scrolling to a mouse that lacks it. Microsoft documents these settings in Change mouse settings.

Adjust pointer speed and precision
Use the pointer-speed slider to change how far the pointer moves in response to your hand movement. Enhance pointer precision is a separate control: Microsoft describes it as making the pointer more accurate when the mouse is moving slowly. There is no universally best setting; choose what feels predictable for your work and adjust it if the pointer overshoots or feels sluggish.
Make the pointer easier to find
Windows has a built-in locator that does not require PowerToys. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional mouse settings > Pointer Options. Under Visibility, enable Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key. Press Ctrl when you lose track of the cursor to highlight its location.

The same Pointer Options area offers pointer trails, which make movement easier to follow, and Hide pointer while typing, which keeps the cursor from obscuring text as you work. If visibility remains a problem, Windows also provides pointer appearance and size controls under Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch; increasing the size or choosing a contrasting color can help distinguish it from a busy background.
Reduce the need to hold a mouse button
ClickLock lets you begin a drag or text selection with a click, then release the button while continuing to move the pointer. Click again to release the lock. Microsoft Support describes it as allowing highlighting or dragging without holding down the mouse button. It can be useful if sustained pressure is difficult, though it changes the usual drag interaction and may take some getting used to.

- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional mouse settings.
- On the Buttons tab, select Turn on ClickLock, then choose Settings if you want to adjust how long the button must be held before the lock engages.
- Select OK to apply the change. To drag, hold the primary button briefly, release it, move the pointer, and click again to finish.
Microsoft Learn also describes ClickLock as locking down the primary button after a single click, and notes that it can make selecting text, dragging objects, or opening menus easier for some people with physical limitations. See Mouse Input Overview.
Change double-click speed or jump to a dialog’s default button
In Additional mouse settings, the Buttons tab also lets you change double-click speed. If Windows does not recognize your double-clicks, try a slower setting; if it treats two separate clicks as one, try a faster setting.

Under Pointer Options, Snap To moves the pointer to the default button in a dialog box. It can save a small pointer movement when a dialog appears, but Microsoft cautions that some apps might not support it.
Use the numeric keypad to control the pointer
Mouse Keys is a Windows accessibility feature that lets you move and operate the pointer with a numeric keypad. It is useful when a mouse is unavailable or difficult to use, but it does not replace every mouse workflow and requires a keyboard with a numeric keypad.

Windows 10 support context
Microsoft’s mouse documentation also covers Windows 10, but support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. This guide therefore gives Windows 11 paths as the default rather than treating Windows 10 as the current baseline.
