None upgrades the camera sensor, and a gimbal is mainly for smoother moving video—not a universal improvement for still photos. Choose based on what you shoot, then confirm that the accessory fits your iPhone and case.
Choose an accessory for the problem you want to solve

These accessories affect how you frame, record or illuminate a shot; they do not change the iPhone’s camera hardware. Apple’s catalog lists examples such as JOBY and ShiftCam mounts, RØDE microphones and a ShiftCam LED selfie light, but catalog listings are not independent performance tests. Use a tripod or mount for steady, hands-free shots
A tripod or mount is a practical choice when you want a fixed frame—for example, for a self-timer photo, a group shot, or video recorded from one position. It can also make it easier to keep framing consistent between takes. Consider how it attaches to the phone, how quickly it can be set up, and whether a remote or grip is included if you need to start the camera without touching the phone.
Check the product listing for your exact iPhone model and case. An accessory appearing in Apple’s catalog does not establish that it fits every iPhone or case combination.

Pick a gimbal for moving video, not as a still-photo upgrade
A gimbal is intended to help with moving footage. It serves a different purpose from a tripod, which holds a phone in a stationary position. If most of your pictures are still photos or your video is shot from a fixed spot, a mount may address the actual need more directly. Before choosing a gimbal, check its supported phone models, how the phone attaches, and whether your case affects fit.
Add a microphone when spoken audio matters
For interviews, presentations or other video where speech needs to be prominent, an external microphone is worth considering. It addresses recorded audio, not image quality. Check the microphone’s connector requirements and mounting method, and confirm that it works with your iPhone model. Apple’s catalog includes RØDE microphone examples, but those listings do not establish comparative sound performance.

Use portable light when available light is not enough
A compact light can help illuminate a nearby subject when the available light is inadequate. It is a situational accessory, not a camera upgrade: consider where it will attach, how it is powered and whether carrying it makes sense for the shots you take. Apple’s catalog includes a ShiftCam LED selfie light; its presence there is not an independent assessment of performance.

Some supported iPhone models let you select different Main camera framing options in the camera settings. Apple documents 24 mm, 28 mm and 35 mm settings on supported models. iPhone Air has a 26 mm default, with alternate 28 mm and 35 mm framing settings. Check Apple’s instructions for your model at Adjust the Main camera lens on iPhone. These options may meet a framing need without adding an external lens.

Check compatibility and certification before buying
- Confirm fit: Verify the product listing names your iPhone model and accounts for your case, if you plan to leave it on.
- Check connections: For electronic accessories such as microphones or lights, make sure the connector and any required setup work with your phone.
- Look for Made for iPhone: Apple advises checking for this label on third-party electronic accessories. Apple says it indicates that the developer has certified the accessory to meet Apple performance standards; it is not a claim that the accessory improves the camera. Read Apple’s guidance on Made for iPhone accessories.
- Match the accessory to the shot: Choose a tripod for stationary framing, a gimbal for moving video, a microphone for speech, or a light when illumination is lacking.
