Yes—on Windows, a game controller can navigate some app interfaces, operate Windows 11’s controller-focused Xbox mode, and, with certain Xbox controllers, send mapped keyboard inputs. These are separate capabilities: app navigation depends on the app, Xbox mode has Windows-version and availability limits, and keyboard mapping is limited to supported controller models.

Navigate apps that support gamepad focus
Windows app developers can make controls navigable without a pointer. In a compatible app, the D-pad or left stick moves focus between interface elements; A or Select activates the focused item. What happens depends on how the app was built, so a controller that works in one app may do little or nothing in another.
Focus navigation is not practical for every screen. Microsoft’s guidance for app developers says, “For app experiences where XY focus navigation isn’t practical (such as maps or drawing apps), enable mouse mode.” That guidance describes a way an app can support controller interaction; it does not make every map, drawing app, or Windows desktop automatically controllable with a standard gamepad. Use Windows 11 Xbox mode for a controller-focused gaming experience
Xbox mode is a full-screen, console-inspired Windows gaming experience designed for controller navigation and play. Microsoft’s support page applies to Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 and says the feature requires version 24H2 or later and is available only in supported markets. Availability can therefore depend on both your Windows version and region; the feature is not a promise that every Windows 11 PC has it.

Turn it on and find it
- On a supported PC form factor, open Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode and enable the feature.
- Open Xbox mode from a documented entry point such as Game Bar or Task View, then navigate its full-screen interface with your controller.
- To return to the desktop, use Task View or press Win+F11.
Xbox mode behaves differently from the ordinary desktop. It may show one app window at a time, disable some desktop keyboard shortcuts, and display apps that do not support full screen against a black background. Map controller buttons to keyboard inputs on supported Xbox models
Xbox Accessories supports controller-to-keyboard input mapping on PC for the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller, according to Xbox Wire’s October 26, 2023 update. This can help in a supported game that has extra commands, limited controller remapping, or no controller support. Xbox gives Sea of Thieves as an example: a mapped key can select a tool or weapon while the player keeps other actions on the controller.

This is a focused workaround for particular inputs and models—not a way to turn any gamepad into a universal Windows keyboard. Check the controller model and the game’s behavior, then configure the mapping in Xbox Accessories. Xbox Wire’s update explains the feature.

The Xbox Adaptive Controller is designed to connect with external switches, mounts, and joysticks. Xbox also lists button-layout configuration in Xbox Accessories for the Adaptive Controller, Adaptive Joystick, Xbox Wireless Controller, Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, and many third-party external joysticks. These options can support different ways of interacting, but compatibility depends on the hardware and the game—not every combination will suit every player or setup.

Know when a mouse or keyboard is still the better tool
- Text entry: The documented features here focus on navigation, gaming, and mapped commands; they do not establish that a controller is a practical replacement for a keyboard for general typing.
- Precise pointing: App-level mouse mode exists only where an app implements it. A physical mouse remains the straightforward choice when you need reliable pointer control across Windows.
- Compatibility: Check the individual app or game as well as the controller. Windows gamepad APIs, an app’s navigation design, Xbox mode, and Xbox Accessories mappings are distinct layers of support.
