An AI agent with persistent memory needs more than additional storage: it needs rules for what to keep, revise, retrieve and eventually forget. A forgetting curve can be part of that policy, but current agent-memory research does not establish that one human-inspired decay formula is right for every system.
Why a larger database does not solve agent memory
More storage can preserve more interaction history, but persistence alone does not determine whether an agent can use that information well. A long-lived memory system must handle growth, outdated or conflicting facts, low-value material and retrieval of context that is useful now.
A 2026 arXiv proposal by Orogat and Mansour frames these as distinct lifecycle problems: unregulated growth, lack of semantic revision, capacity-driven forgetting and read-only retrieval. It proposes four state-level operations—ingestion, revision, forgetting and retrieval—rather than treating memory as a database that only accumulates records. Read the paper.
The distinction matters in practice. If a user changes a preference, the system may need to revise an earlier memory rather than store both indefinitely. If details are no longer useful, it may need to remove or deprioritize them. And even accurate stored information has little value if retrieval returns irrelevant context.

Does an AI agent need a forgetting curve?
It may benefit from deliberate forgetting, but “forgetting curve” is not a universal prescription. In psychology, the phrase refers to a pattern of declining recall over time. In an agent, a time-based decay schedule is only one possible way to decide what remains available; usefulness can also depend on repetition, recency, task relevance, conflicts and how information is represented.
The 2025 SAGE paper describes a memory-optimization mechanism inspired by the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve. Its reported evaluations found 2.26× performance gains in database operations for GPT-4 and improvements of 5.0–48.0 absolute percentage points for open-source models. Those are results on the paper’s stated evaluations, not a prediction that every agent will improve by those amounts or that the same decay policy will suit other tasks. See the SAGE paper.

Other approaches use more than elapsed time. A 2026 Microsoft Research architecture describes six mechanisms: sleep-phase consolidation, interference-based forgetting, engram maturation, reconsolidation upon retrieval, entity knowledge graphs and hybrid multi-cue retrieval. That variety is a reminder that forgetting policy, memory representation and retrieval are interdependent design choices—not consequences of choosing a larger or smaller store. See the Microsoft Research publication.
How should an agent decide what to forget?
Selective forgetting should be evaluated as part of the whole memory lifecycle. A design should make clear what qualifies for storage, how changing information is reconciled, which memories lose priority or are removed, and how the agent finds the right context later.

- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Ingestion: Identify which interaction details merit persistence instead of saving every turn indiscriminately.
- Revision: Update facts when new information supersedes them, and define how the system handles unresolved contradictions.
- Forgetting: Choose whether to use elapsed time, interference, task relevance or another policy, and distinguish deprioritizing a memory from deleting it.
- Retrieval: Check whether the system surfaces relevant memories using appropriate cues rather than simply returning the newest or most frequent records.
- Capacity: Measure behavior as storage limits change, including whether pressure causes useful facts to be displaced.
This approach avoids treating age as a proxy for value. A one-time fact can remain important, while frequently repeated information can become redundant. The policy should reflect what the agent is expected to do and how errors from stale or missing context affect that task.
What the published evaluations do—and do not—show
The Microsoft Research page reports results from separate evaluations, so their figures should not be read as a single head-to-head comparison of memory policies.

| Evaluation or comparison | Reported result | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Raw-retrieval comparison at a 200K-token context budget | 70.1% versus 71.2% retrieval accuracy; the page reports overlapping 95% confidence intervals. | The reported figures do not establish a statistically clear accuracy advantage for either result. |
| VSCode issue-tracking evaluation | Deduplication-based consolidation achieved 97.2% retention precision with 58% store reduction. The dataset is described as 13K issues and 120K events. | Consolidation can reduce store size while retaining information precisely in this evaluation; it is not a universal guarantee. |
| S-tier LongMemEval evaluation | Deduplication-based consolidation produced a reported 13.3-percentage-point increase in preference recall on an evaluation with 50 sessions. | The result applies to that evaluation setup, not to all tasks or memory systems. |
The Microsoft page also describes LongMemEval evaluations over 475 sessions and roughly 540K unique turns. The 50-session S-tier result is a separate reported evaluation condition. Keeping these scopes distinct matters: a result at one context budget, dataset scale or session set cannot establish that the same forgetting policy will work across other agents and workloads.
A peer-reviewed 2022 study on episodic control likewise reports that forgetting’s effects depend on how information is represented. That supports evaluating representation alongside memory size and decay, rather than assuming that forgetting is inherently beneficial or harmful. See the PubMed record.

A practical way to assess an agent-memory design
- Define the job. Specify what kinds of information should persist and what mistakes stale or missing context could cause.
- Inspect the lifecycle. Determine how the system ingests, revises, forgets and retrieves memories. A design that only documents storage is incomplete.
- Test changing and conflicting facts. Check whether a revised preference or corrected detail replaces or appropriately qualifies an older memory.
- Vary capacity. Assess retrieval and task performance at different store limits to see whether pruning removes low-value material or displaces important context.
- Track multiple outcomes. Compare retrieval accuracy, store size, revision quality, resilience to stale or conflicting information, and task performance—not storage reduction alone.
- Interpret results within their conditions. Record the dataset, task, context budget and evaluation scope alongside any reported metric before applying it to another system.
The evidence supports selective forgetting as one useful memory-management capability, not a universal biological formula to copy. The more durable design principle is to manage the full lifecycle and test whether the system keeps the right information available for the task.
