Historic reports about the 2012 YouPorn-related password exposure focused on YP Chat, a chat service operated by an outside provider—not a confirmed breach of YouPorn’s own systems. Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) later recorded more than 1.3 million YouPorn accounts exposed, including email addresses and plain-text passwords. Those figures describe different records and should not be treated as counts of the same group of YP Chat users.

Did YouPorn leak passwords?

HIBP’s breach record says the incident occurred in February 2012 and exposed email addresses and plain-text passwords. HIBP added the record on July 30, 2015, and lists over 1.3 million exposed YouPorn accounts. That is HIBP’s account figure; it does not establish that 1.3 million unique people used YP Chat.

Contemporaneous reports centered on YP Chat. On February 22, 2012, the Associated Press reported that YouPorn owner Manwin Holding SARL said the chat service was run by an outside company on separate servers, and that there had been no breach at YouPorn itself. AP also reported that the chat site had been disabled pending investigation. The next day, SecurityWeek reported on YP Chat logs that had reportedly been publicly accessible since November 2007; the issue had been fixed, but copies had been posted online.

SecurityWeek quoted YouPorn Vice President of Operations Brad Black estimating “several thousand” unique affected YP Chat users. He said repeated use generated multiple records, inflating larger counts. This contemporaneous estimate and HIBP’s later total are not directly comparable: one was an estimate of unique YP Chat users, while the other is a breach-database count of YouPorn accounts.

AP could not confirm at the time that the credential combinations circulating online were authentic. The incident reporting therefore documents an exposure and response, but does not independently verify every circulating username-and-password combination.

Was YP Chat hacked?

The available accounts describe exposed YP Chat logs and a response that included disabling the chat site and investigating. They distinguish YP Chat, which was said to be operated by an outside company on separate servers, from YouPorn’s own infrastructure. Manwin said there was no breach at YouPorn itself. HIBP’s later record associates the exposed accounts with YouPorn, but it does not erase that distinction in the contemporaneous reporting.

The 2012 reports describe a historic incident, not a current breach. They do not establish the security features or account-recovery options YouPorn supports today.

What should I do if I reused my YouPorn password?

  1. Change the exposed password. If you still use the password associated with YP Chat or the YouPorn breach record, replace it on that account where you can still access it.
  2. Change it anywhere else you reused it. Update every other account using the same password or a closely repeated version. Black’s 2012 advice specifically urged YP Chat users to update credentials on other sites if they reused them.
  3. Use a unique password for each account. A password manager can generate and store distinct credentials, reducing both password reuse and the burden of remembering many passwords.
  4. Turn on multifactor authentication. Enable two-factor or multifactor authentication wherever the account supports it. A physical USB security key is one possible second factor, but check that each service supports the method you choose; the cited incident sources do not establish YouPorn’s current MFA options.

A password change removes the exposed credential from an account; unique passwords limit how far a future exposure can spread; MFA adds another verification step. These measures reduce risk, but the appearance of an email address in a breach record does not by itself prove identity theft, financial loss, or that a current account is compromised.

Can I check whether my email was in the YouPorn breach?

HIBP classifies the breach as sensitive because identifying someone as a member of a site can adversely affect them. It says sensitive breaches can be searched only by the verified owner of an email address through its notification flow. Use that private verification process rather than posting your email or publicly disclosing whether you had an account. Mozilla Monitor lists February 21, 2012 as the breach date and says its breach data comes from HIBP.

Why breach announcements do not always lead to safer passwords

A 2020 password-behavior study by Sruti Bhagavatula, Lujo Bauer, and Apu Kapadia examined 249 participants overall. Of 63 participants with accounts on studied breached domains, 21 changed passwords after an announcement, and 15 did so within three months. This was not a YouPorn study. The authors also found that many changes did not make passwords stronger and that participants often neglected similar passwords used on other sites—one reason to change reused credentials, not merely make a small variation.
