To use Googlebook’s phone-connected features, you need a companion Android phone running Android 17 or later. Googlebook itself is a laptop built on Android technology with ChromeOS desktop foundations; ordinary laptop and app use does not require that you own an Android 17 phone. The version requirement applies to cross-device features such as continuing phone activities, accessing phone apps and files, and sharing an internet connection.
What Android 17 is required for
Google’s compatibility requirement is for the phone paired with the Googlebook, not for the laptop to run Android 17 as a phone operating system. Google describes Googlebook as a laptop category built on the Android technology stack with desktop foundations from ChromeOS. It supports Android apps from Google Play as well as desktop-class Chrome browsing; Google says app, game, and subscription availability varies. See Google’s Googlebook cross-device setup and support guidance and Google’s September 21, 2026 Googlebook announcement.
Without a compatible phone, you can still use Googlebook as a laptop. You simply won’t have the supported phone-linked services that make the two devices work together. Google also says some phone apps can be interacted with from the laptop without installing them on Googlebook; that is different from installing an Android app locally from Play Store. App behavior and availability depend on the app.
Which Googlebook features use the phone connection
Google groups the connected features into activity continuation and internet sharing, and lets users enable features separately. The available experience may vary with the phone, app, software updates, and network.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Continue activity
Google describes access to phone apps, notifications, files and media, and phone tasks. Android Developers documents a specific Continue On behavior in Android 17 (API level 37) and later: an app icon suggestion can appear in the Googlebook taskbar for an activity on a nearby phone, and selecting it can resume that activity. That is not a guarantee that every app supports every handoff flow. See Android Developers’ Android 17 feature documentation.
Internet sharing
Google lists automatic Wi-Fi and instant hotspot options among the cross-device services. These can help the laptop connect through the phone, but the feature is not the same as a general requirement for using Googlebook’s built-in Wi-Fi.

Requirements for Googlebook cross-device services
Google Support says the Googlebook must run the latest Googlebook OS and the companion phone must run Android 17 or later. Its setup checklist also requires both devices to have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on, to be signed in to the same Google Account, and to share a Wi-Fi network or personal hotspot. Google recommends updating apps through Play Store. The service can be shared when the devices have at least one Google Account in common. Consult Google Support’s cross-device requirements for the current steps.

- Googlebook: latest Googlebook OS.
- Phone: Android 17 or later.
- Accounts: at least one Google Account shared between both devices.
- Connections: Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled on both; both devices on the same Wi-Fi network or personal hotspot.
- Apps: check for app updates in Play Store.
Why the Wi-Fi network can prevent setup
Meeting the device and account requirements may not be enough: Google says the Wi-Fi network must support Multicast DNS (mDNS) for cross-device services. Public and corporate Wi-Fi networks may block the experience through their network settings. If setup works on a personal network or hotspot but not at work or in a public place, network restrictions are a likely factor; ask the network administrator whether mDNS is supported rather than assuming the phone is incompatible.

How to troubleshoot a connection that will not work
Google’s recommended recovery steps are straightforward. Check the shared network and required radios first, then refresh the service and devices before checking updates.
- Confirm both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network or personal hotspot, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on.
- Turn the relevant cross-device service off and on again in its settings.
- Restart both the Googlebook and the phone.
- Check for Googlebook OS and app updates, including app updates in Play Store.
- If the issue persists only on a public or corporate network, check whether that network supports mDNS.

What Googlebook is—and what the Android 17 threshold does not mean
Google announced Googlebook on September 21, 2026, describing it as a new laptop category with ChromeOS desktop foundations and Android technology. The announcement named Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo as initial hardware partners, with U.S. shelf availability from October 4 and availability in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia from October 5. These dates and regions describe Google’s launch announcement, not a guarantee of current stock.
The same announcement said Googlebook models would support a desktop-class Chrome browser, Android apps from Play Store, and certain local development tools. Google described phone setup synchronization and features called Continue On, Files, and Cast My Apps. The Android 17 threshold is specifically relevant to the phone-connected portion of this experience. Google’s Google Store XPS Googlebook listing likewise specifies compatible Android phones running Android 17 or later and describes phone task handoff, app access, and file access.
