Microsoft Edge includes a built-in surfing game called Surf. To play, enter edge://surf in Edge’s address bar; no extension, separate download, or internet connection is required. Surf has been available in the Stable version of Edge since May 26, 2020, and offers three game modes.
How to open Microsoft Edge Surf
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select the address bar.
- Type edge://surf.
- Press Enter.
The game loads inside Edge as a built-in browser page. Edge may also show a link to Surf on its offline error page when it detects that you have no internet connection. That link is conditional; entering edge://surf directly is the more dependable way to launch the game.
What you do in the game
Surf is an endless-runner-style game inspired by the classic Windows game SkiFree. You steer a surfer through the water, avoid obstacles, and try to stay ahead of the Kraken.
Endless
Travel as far as possible while avoiding hazards and the Kraken. Your distance determines your score, and the mode continues until the run ends.

Time trial
Complete a fixed course as quickly as possible. Coins can reduce your time, so the fastest route is not always simply a straight line.
Zig zag
Pass through gates in sequence to build a streak. Missing a gate resets the streak, but the run continues until you lose all your lives.
To change modes, open the game settings menu. Microsoft documents changing modes through this menu.
Controls
With a keyboard, use these controls:

Surf also supports a mouse, touch input, Xbox controllers, PlayStation controllers, Switch Pro controllers, and the Xbox Adaptive Controller. Compatible gamepads can provide rumble or haptic feedback. The settings menu shows the instructions for the input method available on your device.

Surf settings and accessibility options
Open the game settings menu to adjust the game. Microsoft’s feature page identifies the settings icon in the upper-right corner. Available options include:
- High visibility mode: highlights hit boxes around objects so obstacles are easier to identify.
- Reduced speed mode: slows the game and gives you more time to react.
- Control instructions: displays the controls for your current input method.
- Reset statistics: clears the saved game statistics.
Each mode keeps its own high score. Edge displays a notification when you set a new record.
Where Edge Surf is supported
Surf is not guaranteed to work on every Edge installation or platform. Microsoft’s current AllowSurfGame policy documentation lists these baselines:

Microsoft’s consumer Edge pages describe Surf as available on mobile, but the more specific policy table lists Android as unsupported and sets Edge 146 as the iOS baseline. Do not assume that edge://surf works on an Android phone.

What to do if edge://surf does not work
1. Check your Edge version
In Edge, select Settings and more (…) > Settings > About Microsoft Edge. Edge checks for updates on that page and may ask you to restart the browser.
On Windows and macOS, the documented minimum is Edge 83. On iOS, the current policy documentation lists Edge 146 or later.
2. Restart Edge after updating
If Edge downloads an update, restart the browser before trying edge://surf again. The game may not become available until the updated browser session starts.
3. Check whether an administrator disabled the game
Schools, businesses, and other managed installations can disable Surf with the Microsoft Edge policy named AllowSurfGame. When that policy is disabled, neither the offline-page link nor the direct edge://surf address will launch the game.

On Windows, an administrator manages the policy through Administrative Templates/Microsoft Edge. The policy is called Allow surf game. Its registry path is SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge.
The value is a REG_DWORD named AllowSurfGame. Microsoft’s disabled example is 0x00000000. Policy changes require an Edge restart. The policy is enabled by default when it is not configured, but it is handled per profile and does not apply to a profile signed in with a Microsoft account. If this is a work or school computer, contact the administrator rather than changing managed settings yourself.

No. Microsoft released Surf in the Stable Edge channel on May 26, 2020, starting with build 83.0.478.37. The game may be resurfacing in searches or social posts, but it has been part of Edge for years.
Surf is not an offline-only feature. Offline play is one of its intended uses, but the game can also be opened directly while Edge is online with edge://surf.

Do I need to download Microsoft Edge Surf?
No. Surf is built into Microsoft Edge. Enter edge://surf in the address bar; you do not need an extension, separate download, or installation.
