Yahoo directed webmasters to Bing Webmaster Tools after Yahoo Search completed its transition to Bing, but that did not preserve Site Explorer’s open competitor-link research as a continuous service. Bing later offered its own Link Explorer, retired it in 2015, and subsequently described Backlinks and Site Explorer features in Bing Webmaster Tools.
What Yahoo! Site Explorer did
Yahoo! Site Explorer was a web service for inspecting information about websites, including indexed pages and inbound links. It launched on September 29, 2005, according to contemporaneous reporting that attributed the date to Yahoo Site Explorer product manager Hemant Minocha. Search Engine Land reported Yahoo’s closure announcement in July 2011.

When did Yahoo! Site Explorer shut down?
Yahoo said Site Explorer services would no longer be available starting November 21, 2011. Its explanation, reproduced by Search Engine Land on November 18, 2011, was that Yahoo Search had completed its algorithmic transition to Bing and merged Site Explorer into Bing Webmaster Tools.
Yahoo advised webmasters to use Bing Webmaster Tools to help their sites receive organic search traffic from Bing and Yahoo. That recommendation concerned webmaster tools; it should not be read as a promise that Bing offered the same public view of links to any site. Contemporary reporting noted that webmaster data from Bing and Google was tied to sites claimed by their publishers.

What replaced Yahoo! Site Explorer?
There was no single, uninterrupted replacement that carried over every Yahoo feature. The products involved came in distinct stages:
| Service or stage | What it offered | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Yahoo! Site Explorer | Website information including indexed pages and inbound links. | Launched September 29, 2005, as reported by Search Engine Land; unavailable starting November 21, 2011. |
| Bing Webmaster Tools | Yahoo’s recommended destination for webmasters after the search transition; the 2011 coverage described its data as associated with sites claimed by their publishers. | Recommended in Yahoo’s 2011 closure announcement. |
| Bing Link Explorer | A sample of links pointing to any site, including sites not owned by the user. | Added to Bing Webmaster Tools in June 2012; retirement began October 1, 2015. |
| Later Bing Backlinks and Site Explorer features | Bing’s 2020 Backlinks description covered links for any site, including similar sites. Its 2024 Site Explorer overview described site structure, clicks and impressions, backlink counts, indexing requests, folder insights, and page statuses. | Described in Bing publications dated July 29, 2020, and January 25, 2024; these dated descriptions do not guarantee current interface details. |
Why Bing Link Explorer also disappeared
Bing says Link Explorer was introduced with its Webmaster Tools “Phoenix” release in June 2012. Its purpose included showing a sample of links to any site, which made it useful for competitive link analysis. Bing announced its retirement in September 2015, with shutdown starting October 1. The company explained that changes to its index architecture meant it could no longer retrieve the data needed for the feature at query time. See Bing’s September 17, 2015 retirement announcement.
In that same 2015 announcement, Bing said its Inbound Links tool could display or export up to 1 million inbound links at a time. That was a stated capacity for that tool in 2015—not a current Bing limit or an industry-wide statistic.
Can you still check backlinks for any website?
Bing’s July 2020 announcement described its Backlinks feature as listing links for any site, including similar sites. That is the clearest dated Bing statement in these sources about checking links beyond a site you own. Bing’s 2020 product announcement should be treated as a description at that time, not a guarantee that every control or capability remains unchanged.

Bing’s January 2024 overview of Site Explorer emphasizes broader site management: site structure, clicks and impressions, backlink counts, indexing requests, folder-level insights, and page statuses. It is not described there as a direct recreation of Yahoo’s old service. Review the Bing Site Explorer overview and check Bing Webmaster Tools’ live interface for current availability and controls.

If your goal is to analyze links rather than manage a verified site, check what a tool actually exposes before relying on it. Relevant differences include:
- Ownership requirements: Does it report only for sites you have verified, or can it show competitor domains too?
- Link detail and output: Does it provide individual backlink records or only aggregated counts, and can you filter or export the results?
- Coverage: Which search index and geographic market does the data represent?
- Documentation date: When was the feature description last updated, and does the live interface still match it?
The cited sources establish a history of Yahoo and Bing features, not a current ranking of third-party backlink products or proof that any one provider is best.
