Yahoo’s landrush for new ymail.com and rocketmail.com email addresses was scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Eastern / noon Pacific on June 19, 2008, through Yahoo Mail. This was a historical launch, not confirmation that either domain is open for registration today.
What time did Yahoo’s address landrush start?
Yahoo said the two domains should become available around noon Pacific Time, or 3 p.m. Eastern Time, on Thursday, June 19, 2008. BetaNews quoted a Yahoo spokesperson giving that expected time and directing people to mail.yahoo.com to try to register. The wording was an expected launch time, not a guarantee that every user could secure a particular address.
Which email domains did Yahoo add?
The launch opened ymail.com and rocketmail.com as alternatives to the established yahoo.com domain. Yahoo described the change as global availability of two additional domains for registering a Yahoo ID. [Yahoo, June 19, 2008]
Why did Yahoo add ymail.com and rocketmail.com?
Many short, memorable yahoo.com addresses had already been claimed as Yahoo Mail’s user base grew. The added domains gave people more chances to choose a recognizable address, including one that could incorporate their name. ITmedia described the growing difficulty of finding an easy-to-remember address; in launch coverage, BetaNews also reported that a Harris Interactive survey commissioned by Yahoo found 70% of surveyed online adults said they would choose an email address containing some part of their name.
#1 Best Overall
Yahoo’s launch announcement cited more than 260 million Yahoo Mail users worldwide. Separately, BetaNews reported Yahoo’s statement that more than 266 million users had signed up for Yahoo Mail. These are two figures with distinct attributions, not interchangeable measurements. [BetaNews, June 19, 2008]
What was Rocketmail, and why was it familiar?
Rocketmail was not simply a newly invented name: it had legacy roots in the email service Yahoo acquired from Four11 in 1997. Yahoo’s 2008 launch reopened the rocketmail.com domain to the broader internet rather than starting from zero. A Yahoo spokesperson told BetaNews that people with Rocketmail accounts remained in Yahoo’s system and that the company was opening the domain to other internet users.

Did new ymail.com and rocketmail.com accounts include Yahoo Mail features?
Yahoo said accounts using the new domains would receive the familiar Yahoo Mail feature set, including unlimited storage, spam and virus protection, and integrated instant messaging and text messaging. The Yahoo ID could also be used across Yahoo services such as Messenger, Flickr, Groups, Sports and Finance. These are features Yahoo described at launch in 2008, not a statement of current product capabilities. [Yahoo, June 19, 2008]

The 2008 launch reports establish that the domains were opened then; they do not establish whether Yahoo still issues new addresses on either domain, or the current rules for account recovery. Do not assume that the historical registration route still works. Check Yahoo’s current account-creation flow and policy information before relying on availability; a desired address may be unavailable even if a registration option is offered.
