If Yahoo Mail shows 1 unread message in your inbox but you can’t find it, compare the inbox in a desktop browser and the mobile app, then use Yahoo’s unread filter to look for a message that is easy to miss. If the count appears only in the app, try Yahoo’s app troubleshooting steps. A connected mail app can also affect how a message appears, but Yahoo does not document one guaranteed fix for a persistent unread count with no visible message.
First, check whether the count appears on desktop too
Open Yahoo Mail in a computer’s web browser and compare the inbox with the mobile app. Yahoo recommends checking mail on a computer when troubleshooting mobile mail. If the count appears in both places, the issue is not limited to the phone app. If it appears only in the app, focus first on app troubleshooting.
Use Yahoo’s unread filter to look for the message
In the relevant folder, use the Unread filter if it is available. Yahoo’s guide for New Yahoo Mail on desktop describes filtering messages by unread status, which can surface an email that is not obvious in the regular inbox list. The guide applies to that desktop experience, and availability may vary by region. See Yahoo’s New Yahoo Mail instructions.
If the filter returns a message, open it or use the message controls to mark it read. If it returns no messages, compare the result with the mobile app rather than assuming the count proves a particular email is unread.

Check other mail apps and devices
Think about whether you also use Yahoo Mail through Outlook, Mac Mail, or another mail app, or have it set up on another device. Yahoo Help explains: “An external mail program, such as Outlook or Mac Mail, retrieves messages from Yahoo Mail and downloads them to your computer or mobile device, making them appear as read in Yahoo Mail.” That describes one way a message’s read state can be affected; it does not establish that another app caused a persistent count.
Review the settings and connected devices for any external mail client you use. Yahoo’s guidance on POP or IMAP client issues also recommends checking client settings and connected devices.

If the count appears only in the mobile app
For certain mobile mail problems, Yahoo recommends updating the app, signing out and back in, and reinstalling it. Its instructions address mail not appearing on a mobile device, so these are reasonable app checks—not a confirmed cure for an unread-count discrepancy. Follow Yahoo’s mobile mail troubleshooting guide.
Message controls can vary by platform and app version. Yahoo’s Android app supports marking a message read or unread with a swipe, and bulk actions by tapping and holding. Check the available controls in your version before using a bulk action. See Yahoo’s Android quick-action instructions.

When to treat this as a security concern
A single unread count, by itself, is not evidence that someone else accessed your account. If you have other reason to suspect the computer is compromised, Yahoo advises running antivirus and antispyware scans. Its guidance appears in Yahoo Help’s article about unread emails appearing as read.

The reviewed Yahoo Help guidance does not identify a universal fix for a persistent “1 unread” count when no unread message appears. The most useful distinction is whether Yahoo’s unread filter finds a message, whether the count is also present in desktop webmail, and whether an external mail app or device is involved. Yahoo’s iOS Revisit feature can show recently marked-unread messages for eligible users, but Yahoo describes it as rolling out in phases; it is not documented as a fix for a persistent inbox count. See Yahoo’s Revisit feature information.
