One current caveat matters: Resolve’s gate valve remains closed, limiting its nominal energy band to 1.7–12 keV.
What each observatory is designed to measure
These observatories answer different questions about X-ray sources. Angular resolution describes how well an instrument separates nearby features on the sky; energy resolution describes how precisely it measures each photon’s energy. A telescope can excel at one without leading in the other.
| Observatory and instrument | What it does well | Published comparison figures |
|---|---|---|
| XRISM Resolve | Non-dispersive microcalorimeter spectroscopy, especially for studying emission and absorption lines in hot plasma. | About 5 eV energy resolution and a 1.7–12 keV nominal band in the current closed-gate configuration; about 3 × 3 arcminutes field of view. NASA/HEASARC XRISM Proposers’ Observatory Guide (2025) |
| XRISM Xtend | CCD imaging over a broad field, providing context around Resolve’s smaller field. | 0.4–13 keV band and about 38.5 × 38.5 arcminutes field of view in the proposal guide; the Xtend telescope assembly’s angular resolution is roughly 1.5 arcminutes. NASA/HEASARC XRISM Proposers’ Observatory Guide; NASA/HEASARC Mission Comparison Table |
| Chandra ACIS-S | Separating close sources and resolving fine structures. | About 0.5 arcsecond angular resolution and an 8.3 × 8.3 arcminute field in HEASARC’s comparison table. NASA/HEASARC Mission Comparison Table |
| XMM-Newton EPIC | Imaging a broad region and collecting many photons, with coarser angular resolution than Chandra. | 0.3–12 keV band, about 4.1 arcseconds angular resolution, and about 33 × 33 arcminutes field in HEASARC’s comparison table. NASA/HEASARC Mission Comparison Table |
| XMM-Newton RGS | Soft X-ray grating spectroscopy; it is a separate instrument from EPIC. | Soft-band grating spectroscopy; the cited comparison does not state a single comparable figure here. NASA’s XMM-Newton overview |
The figures describe particular instruments and published comparison values, not a universal ranking of entire missions. Actual results also depend on the selected instrument, observing setup, target brightness and extent, and timing requirements.
XRISM: detailed spectra, with a current low-energy limit
XRISM is a JAXA-led mission with NASA collaboration and ESA participation. Its two instruments observe simultaneously: Resolve measures individual photon energies with a microcalorimeter, while Xtend uses a CCD camera to image a much wider region. The combination can pair detailed spectral measurements with a broader view of the surrounding sources. JAXA XRISM mission overview; ESA XRISM factsheet

Resolve’s gate valve changes the usable band
The 2025 NASA/HEASARC XRISM Proposers’ Observatory Guide says Resolve’s gate valve has not opened. Its current nominal band is therefore 1.7–12 keV, rather than the originally planned 0.3–12 keV, and the effective area is lower. Readers comparing specifications should use the closed-gate configuration rather than treating the planned full band as current performance.
When Resolve is a strong fit
Resolve is suited to questions about line energies, elemental composition, and plasma motion in hot, energetic objects such as black holes, neutron stars, supernova remnants, and galaxy clusters. Its roughly 5 eV energy resolution helps distinguish spectral features that broader energy measurements may blend. That strength is spectral, not a claim that XRISM produces the sharpest images.

Chandra: the strongest choice for fine angular detail
For crowded fields or small structures, Chandra’s angular resolution is the key advantage. In HEASARC’s comparison, Chandra ACIS-S is listed at about 0.5 arcsecond, compared with about 4.1 arcseconds for XMM-Newton EPIC and roughly 1.5 arcminutes for the XRISM Xtend telescope assembly. These are instrument-specific figures, but they show why Chandra can separate nearby sources that broader, coarser imaging may blend. NASA/HEASARC Mission Comparison Table; NASA Chandra mission overview
That spatial advantage does not make Chandra the automatic choice for every spectrum or wide-area image. The relevant question is whether resolving small angular separations is more important than collecting area, field coverage, or the spectral capability of a different instrument.

XMM-Newton: broad-field imaging and a separate grating instrument
XMM-Newton EPIC offers a field of about 33 × 33 arcminutes in HEASARC’s comparison table, substantially wider than the listed Chandra ACIS-S field of 8.3 × 8.3 arcminutes. A NASA senior review describes XMM-Newton imaging as complementary to Chandra’s: XMM has a larger effective area and field, while Chandra has higher angular resolution. The review is historical, so it is useful for that mission-level comparison rather than as a current calibration source. NASA/HEASARC Mission Comparison Table; NASA Astro2014 Senior Review
XMM-Newton also carries the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS), which provides soft X-ray grating spectroscopy. EPIC and RGS are distinct instruments and methods, so a comparison focused only on EPIC imaging does not capture all of XMM-Newton’s spectroscopic capabilities. NASA’s XMM-Newton overview

Choose by the observation you need
- To separate nearby sources or resolve fine structure: prioritize Chandra’s angular resolution.
- To measure line energies, composition, or motion in hot plasma: consider XRISM Resolve, while checking that the current 1.7 keV lower-energy limit still covers the features of interest.
- To image an extended region or gather many photons across a broad field: consider XMM-Newton EPIC’s field and throughput; XRISM Xtend can also provide wide-field context alongside a Resolve observation.
- For soft X-ray spectroscopy with XMM-Newton: include RGS in the comparison rather than treating EPIC as the mission’s only instrument.
Before deciding, match the target’s energy range and angular extent to the instrument, then weigh spatial resolution, spectral resolution, field of view, effective area, and timing needs. A single specification—especially angular resolution—cannot answer every observing question.
